He projects to start somewhere in the Bills’ 4-3, depending on how they shuffle players around.
Biggest question: The Bills began the day with six picks in the first three rounds, the product of several trades since last year that gave them some of the most draft capital in the league. They used almost all of that capital to trade up for Edmunds and quarterback Josh Allen. Barring further trades, that leaves Buffalo with an 80-selection gap until their next pick, No. 96 in the third round. Smith is the best linebacker in the draft class. He possesses tremendous sideline-to-sideline speed, can run with tight ends, is a big hitter and is a leader inside the locker room. Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who coached Patrick Willis in San Francisco, has to be thrilled to add such an impact player.

Why they did it: The Browns needed to use this pick on a quarterback, and the one they decided fits best is Mayfield. He’s small (6 feet, 5/8 inches), but he’s competitive and accurate. He plays with swagger, perhaps to the extreme, but he also completed 69.8 percent of his passes during his final season. He left Oklahoma as the Big 12 all-time leader in yards per attempt and consecutive games with a touchdown pass. He is the guy general manager John Dorsey and the Browns are committing their future to.
Biggest question: Mayfield bristles at comparisons to Johnny Manziel, and he and Manziel are different players on the field. But like Manziel, Mayfield is not ideal NFL quarterback size, and he has had off-field issues. The Browns must love his ability, because they have shrugged off an arrest and actions on the field that some teams would not accept. Barkley is regarded as a truly stratospheric running back prospect and as close to a can't-miss proposition as you'll see in the draft. He has no obvious weak points or off-field concerns. He has been called the best running back prospect since Peterson. But as Scott Kacsmar pointed out, that has been true of Elliott, Fournette, Todd Gurley and Trent Richardson. Richardson was seen as a similarly safe pick with no significant flaws when he was drafted in 2012, but he turned out to be a sub-replacement NFL back.
We're often too confident about the top running http://www.authenticlosangelesangelsshop.com/Brandon-Phillips-Jersey back prospect in a given draft class turning into the best halfback from his class at the professional level. By my count, looking at the past 20 drafts, the first running back drafted has turned into the best runner from that class only seven times. That's similar to rates at other positions. We still don't know about recent drafts, and it's a little unfair to compare a back taken in the top three picks to someone such as Bishop Sankey, who fell to the 54th pick of the 2014 draft before being the first back off the board. Let's take a look at the truly world-class running back prospects to try to find similar players to Barkley. It's unlikely that Barkley will fall past the Broncos at No. 5, given that the Giants, Browns and Broncos could all theoretically draft a running back or trade their pick to a team interested in Barkley. How often do top-five backs turn into superstars?
There have been 13 backs drafted in the top five in the past 20 years. Six of them -- Richardson, Cedric Benson, Bush, Curtis Enis, Darren McFadden and Cadillac Williams -- failed to make a Pro Bowl before their NFL careers ended. They have to be considered disappointments, though it's probably unfair to lump Bush into that mix.
Three backs made it to one Pro Bowl: Ronnie Brown, Jamal Lewis and Ricky Williams. Likewise, Brown probably doesn't belong in this group, given that he finished his career with 5,391 rushing yards, and Lewis and Paul Thompson Authentic Jersey Williams each topped 10,000 over the course of their careers. It's also too early to judge Elliott and Fournette.
There are only two backs from this group who made it to multiple Pro Bowls and have Hall of Fame credentials. LaDainian Tomlinson is enshrined in Canton, and Edgerrin James is a two-time finalist and has a reasonable shot of making it one day. Of these 13 backs, I would say that four teams -- the Chargers (with Tomlinson), Colts (James), Ravens (Lewis) and Saints (Bush) -- ended up with a franchise back, while New Orleans was at least able to turn its disastrous trade for Williams into two first-round picks after three seasons, though one of them was conditional.
Let's say five teams found franchise running backs. That's not enough of a successful rate to trust that Barkley is a lock to turn into a perennial superstar. If we look back 10 more years, we'll find two more Hall of Famers (Marshall Faulk and Barry Sanders) and two total washouts (Ki-Jana Carter and Blair Thomas) alongside Garrison Hearst, who falls somewhere in between.
Do the same analysis for quarterbacks, and you'll get roughly similar results. Of the 27 passers drafted in the top five since 1998, three (Philip Rivers and the Manning brothers) are likely to make the Hall of Fame. If the chances of a highly drafted running back and a quarterback turning into a superstar are roughly similar, and it appears that they are, you simply can't justify taking the running back. There's too much upside being left on the table by not drafting a passer, given how much a good signal-caller makes relative to the cost of the second overall pick. The only exception would be if ...Given that Gettleman has suggested that he expects Eli to be the quarterback in 2018, it seems as if the Giants are at least operating under the assumption that their longtime starter isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
So let's ask that question: How much longer should the Giants expect Manning to play? The 37-year-old did complete another healthy season. But with his top two receivers missing most of the year because of injury and his offensive line more of a Matt Slauson Youth jersey theoretical construct than actual protection, his numbers weren't pretty. Before taking an NFL snap, Barkley would have more guaranteed money than any other running back in the NFL. He'd be tied with McCoy for the largest annual average salary for any running back on a multiyear deal. Because Barkley is entering the league as one of the highest-paid backs in football, it's impossible for him to deliver anywhere near the sort of marginal value that
would come from a rookie quarterback. The same would be true for a defensive end such as Chubb and would even qualify for a guard such as Nelson, given that top-tier guards now comfortably make more than similarly pedigreed running backs. While the NFL has decided that Pro Bowl-caliber running backs are worth about only $8 million or so in this market, it doesn't necessarily follow that those backs should be worth that little. The market correction for halfbacks over the past 15 years is borne out by their shorter career spans and the success that teams such as the Patriots have had without committing to a franchise-caliber running back on a long-term contract. Of the past 10 Super Bowl winners, only two -- the Ravens with Ray Rice and the Seahawks with Marshawn Lynch -- were built around backs on top-tier multiyear contracts. The Saints had former second overall pick Reggie Bush in a rotation at halfback, but most of these teams were built around players on rookie deals or backs with middle-class contracts.
Furthermore, teams haven't really suffered when they've lost their star backs. The Cowboys weren't the same without Elliott, but the Jaguars' offense was better while Fournette was sidelined last season. In 2015, offenses around the league lost star backs such as Bell, Lynch and Arian Foster and actually improved.
The majority of big-money deals for running backs in recent years also haven't worked out. Carolina spent years desperately restructuring the deals Marty Hurney gave Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. Chris Johnson failed to make it back to the Pro Bowl after signing his extension. DeMarco Murray's deal in Philadelphia led him to be traded after one season. Even Adrian Peterson's six-year deal (which was restructured along the way) mixed one MVP season with two lost seasons and a third marred by injury. Lynch and McCoy have had the best outcomes among veteran backs since the current CBA was signed. It's possible that the market could have overcorrected and might undervalue backs, but there isn't much evidence of that.
The chances of a quarterback taken with the second overall pick turning into a franchise quarterback would have to be somewhere around 30 percent. The Cleveland Browns are going to select a quarterback with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. What happens next will begin to tell the story of this year's class. The New York Giants might draft a quarterback. They might trade the No. 2 pick. Even if Barkley turns into a superstar, the Giants will be settling for a low-ceiling option if they draft him at No. 2. To understand why that's the case, you have to look at both the recent draft history and the economics of the NFL under the current collective bargaining agreement.
Part of the value of the draft is selecting players who will make a fraction of their true market value over the course of their rookie contract. Take Carson Wentz, who played at an MVP level in his second season before suffering a torn ACL. If Wentz were an unrestricted free agent this offseason, the 25-year-old would have no trouble finding a contract that would pay him $30 million per year for the next three seasons.
Instead of giving Wentz $90 million, if you prorate Wentz's signing bonus, the Eagles will be responsible for a total of $15.7 million over the next two years before picking up the quarterback's fifth-year option, which will be somewhere in the range of $22.8 million. (They could even franchise Wentz for another year at $27.4 million or so, but let's stop there.)
There's no stat that translates player performance into money, but we can use the current quarterback market to estimate what a top-tier passer gets in free agency to illuminate just how much of a bargain Wentz has been and will be if he continues to play at a high level. The top of the market was worth $25 million in 2017, will be Howie Kendrick Womens Jersey somewhere around $27.5 million in 2018 and should hit $30 million when Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan sign their new deals. Against the NBA's triple-double king, it was Rubio who hit the magical trio of round numbers -- 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists -- outplaying Russell Westbrook, who had a strangely uncharacteristic off night (14 points on 5-of-17 shooting with eight turnovers) as the Utah Jazz took Game 3 over the Oklahoma City Thunder 115-102 to go up 2-1 in the series.
The Jazz have built a roster focused around team and togetherness with the mindset that any player can lift the group at any moment. With the way rookie Donovan Mitchell has exploded on his way to superstardom, it seemed like maybe the Jazz were outgrowing that. But with their suffocating defense always present, and with Mitchell hitting some foul-trouble issues, it was Rubio who answered the call.
The critical moments of Rubio's career night came in the second quarter when the Thunder were taking control on both ends, going up by 12 and flashing some dominance on both sides of the ball. Not much was really happening for Utah, and it wasn't as if a light bulb clicked on over Rubio's absolutely sensational samurai ponytail -- it was more a reluctant takeover, with him accepting the open, midrange jumpers the Thunder presented and riding the wave of momentum from there.
"I think the first two games, I wasn't being effective in the midrange area," Rubio said. "It's been something I've been working on. I felt good about, but it wasn't going in; but tonight, it felt good seeing the first couple go in. It's just the way we played. We got open shots, and it's easy to make shots when you are open." It left multiple moments throughout the night for an outrageously charged-up home crowd -- spread out in a glorious pattern of yellow, red and orange -- to chant, "Ru-bi-o!" All that was missing was him crowing back at Peter Pan.The Thunder started much better than in Games 1 and 2, with Billy Donovan making a clever chess move in the first quarter by subbing Patrick Patterson in early for Steven Adams. Westbrook got downhill for a layup -- something he hasn't done much in the series -- right away, and then Patterson knocked back-to-back open 3s when Gobert cheated back to the paint. The other payoff was it allowed Adams to sub back in to play against Utah's second unit and match up with Derrick Favors' minutes at center (Favors killed OKC on the glass in Game 2). The Thunder went on an 18-2 run and really seemed to have something going.
It all looked pretty good and smart, and then Rubio happened. With 19 in the first half, he sparked a 20-4 run to make up a double-digit deficit. Rubio has quietly played quality offensive basketball the past couple months of the season; the Thunder weren't abandoning him -- Rubio was just making shots. But the Steelers wanted to improve their secondary and got their guy for modest compensation, giving Kansas City their 27th pick -- which it used on running back Larry Johnson -- along with the 92nd pick (corner Julian Battle) and 200th pick (quarterback Brooks Bollinger). The Steelers' draft room is known as businesslike, emphasizing consensus building over reactionary high-fiving. That day, everyone sensed the satisfaction without saying a word.
“We’ve always had the philosophy, if you like a guy, you go get him,” said Ron Hughes, the Steelers’ longtime college scouting coordinator who retired in 2015. “We drafted the best player available to us.” Here’s how it all went down. The buzz The Steelers planned to upgrade the Lee Flowers-Brent Alexander tandem at safety, and Polamalu’s hamstring issues during the 2002 season had them hoping he would slide into the late first round. Those plans were smashed once Polamalu smashed his pro day with elite athleticism. When the Steelers walked off the USC campus that day, they knew they had just watched a top-15 player in the draft.
“I remember [then-USC coach] Pete Carroll telling me ... 'I could wake up Troy at 3 a.m. and he’d wake up and run a 4.3 and jump 42 inches,'” said Marvin Demoff, Polamalu’s agent. “So I think the Steelers saw he was different than the people playing safety at the time. The alternative to taking Darnold first would be to take Allen. If he’s Roethlisberger Repeat, there’s nothing to not like about the pick. If the Browns believe they can solve the accuracy issue and that Allen’s skills override accuracy, he’ll be their guy. Checkdowns and system could make up for the difference between 56 and 60 percent. If the Browns take Allen, the Giants could take Darnold. The Jets would also take a quarterback, which would more than likely give the Browns the best player at every other position with this choice.
t’s tough to see this happening given the Browns' recent history of trade-down errors, but it also can’t be eliminated. If the Browns value Fitzpatrick, they might be able to move down and still get him -- and also recoup the third-round pick Mike Shannon Womens Jersey they traded to acquire Taylor. They might also like Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward.
A winless team has nowhere to go but up, so the Cleveland Browns have no choice but to be a better team in 2018. In Tyrod Taylor they have a professional quarterback with experience and will clearly be an improved team with the draft and other offseason additions. But the Browns also have a new offensive coordinator, new quarterback, new running back and new receiver, all of whom must mesh by September. As the Browns have shown in the past, that's a tall order. This will be an improved team, but it won't be a .500 team. Five wins will be a measure of improvement though.

What gives the Chiefs the edge is their overall team speed. Record: 4-5 The Bengals have had the Browns' number lately for some reason, and until the Browns change things, it's tough to pick against that trend. Record: 5-10 Week 17: Sunday, Dec. 30, at Baltimore Ravens, 1:00 p.m. ET It took a record-setting day from Josh McCown for the Browns to beat the Ravens in Baltimore in 2015. That's the only win for Cleveland in the last eight games between the teams heading into 2018. Record: 5-11
Quarterback gauntlet: A tough schedule usually means tough opposing quarterbacks, and that’s true this season. The schedule includes Roethlisberger (twice), Brees, Winston, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton and Derek Carr, all of whom have made the Pro Bowl. The Browns also face Joe Flacco and Andy Dalton, who have gone a combined 28-5 against Cleveland, and Watson, who had 225 yards and three touchdowns against the Browns as a rookie. The Browns have to decide which quarterback best fits their team and which quarterback has the best future. They have studied and debated UCLA’s Josh Rosen, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Wyoming’s Josh Allen and USC’s Sam Darnold. While there has been much discussion about Allen, whose strong arm and physical skills impress, the chatter about Darnold has been quietly consistent. Some have said that Allen could be Ben Roethlisberger; others have opined that Darnold is Andrew Luck. If those statements are true, it’s tough to go wrong with either, but Darnold has the more complete game at this point, and the accuracy issue remains with Sharrif Floyd Jersey Allen.
The fourth pick Jordan Nolan Jersey comes down to three players: Barkley, defensive lineman Bradley Chubb and defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. The best fit would be Barkley, a player many call the best pure football player in the draft. The running back position has become devalued over the years, but a player such as Todd Gurley shows the value of a top back. Barkley is that kind of back. He runs, he catches passes, he blocks, and most important, he scores touchdowns. He, Duke Johnson and Carlos Hyde could all be used effectively to help jump-start an offense that with Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon at receiver, and David Njoku at tight end would suddenly have a more complete complement of weapons. This combination would give the Browns the quarterback they like best, and the best player at every other position on the field.
The New York Giants are said to love the idea of adding Barkley to their offense. Which means the Browns would have to go to plan 1A with the fourth pick. That’s not such a bad option, because it would give the Browns another pass-rusher on Gregg Williams’ defense. GM John Dorsey told the media at the NFL meetings in March that Chubb is “an unbelievable prospect for this draft.” The Browns do have two very good and
young ends on the roster in Myles Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah, both of whom figure to go to Pro Bowls in their careers. But a team also can never have enough ends and pass-rushers. Adding Chubb could allow Williams to move Ogbah inside on passing downs or use all three creatively with other defensive players. Garrett’s first sack on his first play as an NFL player came from inside. The idea: keep the offense guessing who is rushing, and from where. This combination would give the Browns the quarterback they like best and the best pass-rusher on the board.

Legendary Cleveland Browns coach Paul Brown decided he had to find Otto Graham’s successor in 1952. With his first-round pick in the NFL draft, Brown chose quarterback Harry Agganis, the son of poor immigrants and a standout at Boston University. Agganis was a bit of a legend in Boston. A multi-sport high school star in West Lynn, Massachusetts, he was recruited by 75 colleges but chose BU so he could be near his widowed mother. His play drew crowds where there had been none and caught the attention of the NFL’s greatest coach. This is a team that has never really found and/or committed to a player as its franchise quarterback in the regular draft. None of its best quarterbacks came via the regular draft. Bernie Kosar is the one player the team found and committed to, but he came via machinations that put him in the supplemental draft. Since 1950, the Browns have drafted 49 quarterbacks, eight in the first round, with four of those first-rounders taken since 1999. Of the eight, only Kosar has been successful; he led the Browns to three AFC Championship Games. Sipe, a 13th-round choice in 1972 and the team's all-time leader in passing yards, guided the Browns in the Kardiac Kids era in the 1980s.
The Browns twice drafted quarterbacks first overall: Couch in 1999 and Bobby Garrett in 1954. Garrett’s was an interesting choice, coming after the Browns went 11-1 and played for the NFL championship. Garrett’s selection and what happened after shows how different the draft was in the fledgling days of the Browns in the NFL. The draft in those years was based on a lottery, which the Browns won. Garrett was the consensus best pick after an All-America career at Stanford.
The Browns took him as the heir apparent to Graham, who had played eight seasons. However, soon after the draft Paul Brown learned that Garrett was in Air Force ROTC and had a two-year military commitment. Brown traded Garrett to Green Bay before the season in a deal that brought Babe Parilli to Cleveland. Garrett played nine games in Green Bay, but did not start. In 1957, the Browns reacquired Garrett, with Parilli going back to the Packers.
It was in the 1957 training camp that the Browns, and Brown, learned what was holding Garrett back: He stuttered, which made calling plays difficult. One of his teammates at Stanford eventually told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that they had to smack Garrett on the back to get him to make the play calls. Coaches did not take sensitivity training in those days, and Garrett retired before preseason ended. He never played a down for the Browns. The next quarterback taken by the Browns in the top 10 was Mike Phipps, who in 1970 was considered a future star coming out of Purdue.
Art Modell so badly wanted a quarterback that he made a trade with the Miami Dolphins to send receiver Paul Warfield to Miami for the third overall pick. Phipps was selected after quarterback Terry Bradshaw went to Pittsburgh and defensive lineman Mike McCoy to Green Bay.Warfield was beloved in Cleveland. He had grown up in Warren, Ohio, and attended Ohio State. In his six seasons in Cleveland he had become a fan favorite. When Warfield returned to Cleveland for the first time after the deal for a Monday night game, he received an ovation that he has said was among the highlights of his career.
The Browns were coming off 10-win seasons (in 14 games) in 1968 and 1969 that saw the team make consecutive conference championship games. The Oakland Raiders (31,716 miles), Los Angeles Chargers (30,797), Seattle Seahawks (29,088) and Jacksonville Jaguars (20,359) will spend the most time in the air in 2018.

The quarterback has not thrown a football since October 2017, and the Colts continue to take a methodical approach in his rehabilitation to get to that point. Luck has been doing exercises that Ballard has said are "conducive" to the same thing as throwing a football.

Of course, the bottom of lineups should be bad. Otherwise, as with a snowout in a domed stadium, something ain't right. No other season's No. 7/8/9 batters have ever been worse than 82 percent of the league overall. So what's going on here? One hypothesis is teams are getting better at putting their worst hitters at the bottom of the order -- they're more correctly identifying their worst hitters, and they're optimizing their lineups better to give those guys the fewest plate appearances. That'd be a fun story about baseball intelligence in action, but this isn't some 20-year trend that tracks the increase of data-smarts in MLB front offices. It's an abrupt shift from last year, when bottom-feeders hit pretty well, all things considered.
Another hypothesis is these weaker, inferior hitters are particularly hurt by this April's low-homer environment. What made the apparently juiced baseball of 2015-17 so interesting is it benefited almost everybody, even little dudes and dudes who aren't even very good. This wasn't the era of a handful of changed players banging 60- and 70-homer seasons, but of guys who had been hitting two, seven or 13 homers suddenly hitting five, 10 or 20. Scores of hitters responded to the apparently juiced ball by hitting more fly balls. Rational players were doing rational things.
But the ball isn't carrying this month, and all those hitters who retooled their swings Womens Dale Hawerchuck Jersey are getting all the fly balls without all the homers. That might not matter much for sluggers who are really good at hitting home runs 85 feet over the wall, but it could matter for that subset of hitters who'd briefly found themselves credible home run threats. But ... that's in part because there have been more extra innings than in a typical season. In (most likely) a weird fluke, 11 percent of games have gone long so far, which would be the most since 1965 if it held up (which it won't). This is on track to be the first season since 1981 in which the average game is at least 54 outs long. Games are taking longer because games are going longer; control for that, and the average nine innings have taken only three hours and one minute. That's still the third slowest in history, but it's four minutes per day faster than last year. Clearly, the MLB pace-of-play initiatives are working!
BUT -- that's not proof that players are moving faster or pace is improved. Rather, it's proof that offense is down, which means fewer batters are hitting in each game and each inning. It will go up -- offense always does as weather improves -- but it's a primary reason that games are taking less time so far. It's why Thomas' uncertain future in Seattle should become a bit more clear by the end of next week.
In the meantime, here's a closer look at his situation and what could happen next: Where things currently stand Thomas has been absent from the start of the Seahawks' voluntary offseason workout program, which is not surprising. He mentioned to ESPN in January the possibility of holding out if he doesn't get a new deal from Seattle. He's entering the final season of a four-year, $40 million contract, and Seahawks general manager John Schneider told reporters at the NFL owners meetings last month that the two sides weren't currently discussing a new deal. Even if they were, Thomas may opt to stay away until there's a resolution.
What Thomas may want ADVERTISEMENT He hasn't said anything specific about what he's looking for, but it's a safe assumption that it's something in the neighborhood of $13 million a season. That's what Eric Berry makes as the NFL's highest-paid safety. Recall that Thomas mentioned Berry's six-year, $78 million deal last June in response to a question about when he put to rest thoughts of retirement that he had entertained after breaking his leg in December 2016.
Thomas could reasonably argue he's worth that much. Thomas has one more Pro Bowl on his résumé than does Berry (six to five) and the same number of first-team All-Pro selections (three). Why wouldn't the Seahawks pay him?

Seattle's pass defense fell apart without him, allowing a 100.3 passer rating and 12 touchdown passes to only one interception, compared with a 77.8 rating and seven TDs to 10 picks with him on the field.
On the flip side, there's risk in sinking big money into third contracts for players who are approaching or are over 30. The Seahawks just got two painful reminders of that. They extended Bennett late in the 2016 season and Chancellor last summer. Each had a season left on his contract. Bennett was banged up last season and is now gone, and Chancellor's neck injury may end his career. That means the Seahawks paid each of them a bunch of money and may not see either player reach the first season of his extension. Those are extreme examples, but they're no doubt fresh on the Seahawks' minds when it comes to a possible extension for Thomas.
Thomas turns 29 in May. Calling him beat up would be an overstatement, but at the same time he hasn't been the indestructible iron man he was at the start of his career when he didn't miss a game for his first six and a half seasons. He's missed seven starts since, including two this past season because of a hamstring injury. He was also frequently listed on Seattle's injury report last season because of knee and Achilles issues. Could Seattle just let him play out his final year? In theory, yes -- and they could also control his rights for 2019 by applying the franchise tag if they don't extend him. But that's much trickier in practice.
Thomas has always been a difficult person to read, but there's reason to believe he would indeed hold out without a new deal. Consider what he's been making relative to some teammates and other NFL safeties. While Thomas was the league's highest-paid safety when he signed his deal, he still got $4 million less per year than what Seattle gave Sherman that same offseason. Since then, Thomas has been surpassed by five other safeties -- including Chancellor -- in terms of annual average.
Marshawn Lynch missed the first week of training camp in 2014 and returned with a reworked deal. The team increased his base salary for that season by $1.5 million by moving money around his contract, but he didn't get any additional money or a new contract.The Seahawks didn't make any known adjustments to Chancellor's contract when he held out through the first two games of the 2015 season.
One difference between those situations and that of Thomas is that Lynch (two) and Chancellor (three) each had more than a season left on their deals when they held out. Schneider said after the fact that the team refused to give Lynch a new deal at the time because it could have led to players unreasonably expecting similar treatment no matter how far along they were in their contracts.
