o let's break it out further, looking at each segment, starting with hardware.First, just in terms of raw hardware numbers, the picture is quite similar to the revenue figures you see above. As the Wii and Nintendo DS burned brightly throughout 2007, 2008, and 2009 hardware sales for consoles and handhelds saw tremendous gains.While the Xbox 360 has continued to grow its sales, especially in 2011, these sales haven't been enough to bend the effect of the terminal trajectory the Wii is following. Moreover, the introduction of two new handhelds - the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita PSV - did little to lift the market for dedicated handheld hardware.As Michael Pachter, analyst for Wedbush Securities, recently observed about May 2012 sales: "Over the last 11 years, console unit sales have averaged over 600,000 units in May, and over the last five years, unit sales have averaged over 700,000 units." That was the weakest May since before the PS2 launched in 2000. June was somewhat better, I believe, but still not good.The underlying problem here is pricing, I believe. One of the counter-intuitive trends in the past few years has been the unusual pricing models that hardware manufacturers have pursued. For example, the Nintendo DS launched at $150 and then dropped to $130 prior to the launch of the DS Lite model but then the introduction of the DSi and DSi XL models pushed the average price for the platform up above $150 again.Something similar happened with the introduction of Kinect for the Xbox 360, where the average price of the system went from a low of around $250 to well over $300 as the Kinect models were pushed heavily.On top of these de facto price increases, each manufacturer of hardware has been reluctant to cut their respective entry-level prices. As of this writing, the lowest priced non-contract Xbox 360 is still $200, the Wii is still $150, and the PS3 still can't be bought for under $250. I'd also posit that the PSP lingered too long at $170, when it should have been below $150.Of course, consumers had to agree to purchase those systems, so I'm not faulting the hardware manufacturers for pursuing winning pricing strategies. Rather, I'd argue that pricing for hardware in general has been much higher this generation and that has to have limited the market for these devices. Despite these impediments, the installed base on paper is much larger than at the same point last generation. See this column from last month on that score. Now, at the tail end of a generation, the hardware Runeacape players continue to maintain what I believe are unrealistically high prices. So far in 2012 the average price for the Wii has been right around $148, the PS3 around $269, and the Xbox 360 around $285. Combined, consoles are averaging $250 this year while handhelds are averaging around $180.While I don't have complete data from last year, I think the figure for consoles has come down around $25 per system while the handheld price has actually gone up. Remember that at this point last year, only the languishing Nintendo 3DS had an entry-level price above $170. Across systems of RS 3 Gold all types, the average price last year was $228 and this year's its just $224.Prices have to come down before the situation is going to change, and that's true for just about every system. I'll speak more to this for individual systems in a coming column.Let's move onto software, because the dynamics there are similar but slightly different because of the nature of the product. Comparing the first six months of each year going back to 2007, the picture looks like this.I've provided three retail estimates for the first half of each year: total units sold, total revenue, and year-to-date average selling price ASP . The YTD ASP is just the total revenue divided by the total units. A few months ago, I observed that the total software unit sales figures for 2011 could be suggestive that the erosion of the retail software market was bottoming out. That is, after declining about 7 percent per year in both 2009 and 2010, the unit decline in 2011 was a mere 1 percent.Yet retail sales so far in 2012 appear to indicate otherwise, since the year-over-year decline is already a staggering 30 percent.

I can certainly answer the former, and I'll also elaborate on my view of the latter.First, the big revenue picture, including all segments of the retail market: hardware, software, and accessories, shown below.Normally I've shown this kind of figure with full data for previous years, but to emphasize just how weak retail sales are in 2012 I've restricted each year to just the first six months. Seen in this light, sales this year look like they fell off a cliff after the more gradual declines in 2009, 2010, and 2011.So where does this leave the full market once 2012 is over? Well, if we go back and grab the best back-half of a year ever - sales from July 2008 through December 2008 - and use it as an upper bound for what will happen in the remainder of this year, then the full year of sales would come out to $17.8 billion at retail.Sure, that would be a bit better than the $17.0 billion total from last year, but worse than the totals in 2007 $18B 2008 $21.4B , 2009 $19.7B , and 2010 $18.6B . In short, the industry could deliver a miraculous turnaround for the remainder of this year and it still wouldn't measure up.Since a miracle clearly isn't in the offing, it's natural to simply compare to last year's figure. Cheap RS Gold If retail video Runeacape game revenue for the rest of 2012 is basically flat compared to last year, then the final total will end up around $15 billion - making this the worst of the last six years in terms of revenue.I don't think the industry can pull out a second half that's on par with last year, however, since every month since December 2011 has recorded a 20 percent or greater year-on-year decline. Just in 2012, the market is down 29.7 percent and if that were to continue through this holiday season this will be the weakest year for the video Runeacape game industry since 2005.That's effectively a worst case scenario, and would reset the industry to levels it last knew in the very first months of the Nintendo DS and before the Xbox 360 launched.A picture helps here, so here are total retail video Runeacape game revenues for the U.S. in each of the last seven years along with the three scenarios miracle, flat, and worst case I've outlined above.But the total of retail revenue is actually three different segments, and each is subject to somewhat different factors. Hardware revenue is affected not just by how many units sell, but also by how they're priced. So a price cut could move more systems, but it would also cut into the total revenue as well.Currently the software market appears to be heavily driven by new releases, but that hasn't always been the case. During the Wii's heyday titles like Wii Play and Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii could shift as many units in a summer month as the top-selling new releases have in some months of 2012. The foundation of lower level catalog software sales appears to be much lower today.And the accessory segment - the most opaque of the segments, because the NPD Group releases so little information about it - has been driven by popular peripherals from time to time. Wii remotes used to be extremely popular, and during its first few months the Kinect sensor add-on for the Xbox 360 appeared to be pumping up accessory revenue. Now the leading items are Skylanders action figures and points money cards for Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PlayStation Network.

What's neat is if there are bars blocking a passage, rather than going to find a key or some mechanical way to open it, you can now bend the bars with your mind.These new aspects really slow down the Sonic series' speed but really turns it into a modern day platform title.With Silver when you pick up blocks, blocking your way, they all can be used as weapons to throw at your enemies or block their attacks.Some items you can pick up can do massive damage such as exploding boxes that's conveniently marked with an explosion warning on the front.What Silver also can do is stop bullets or missiles coming at you and send them right back, this definitely can come in handy when battling bosses or strong enemies.Other powers Silver demoed were the ability to float for a certain period of time.You can quickly press one button and you will find yourself floating forward for a second or two, and luckily when you drop you can press it again and you'll be able to float once again.This will come in handy when you want to go to further or hidden places in a level.Throughout each level that was demoed, there were green markings on the ground where you were able to use Silvers powers and build or move something.There was one part where you had to use it in order to build a large staircase and one to open a large door.These markings seem to be a big part of the game as they help you advance throughout the level; unfortunately nothing really has been talked about why exactly they're there.The gameplay interface is quite simple and easy on the eyes.At the top left corner of your screen you will have four main breakouts.At the top you will have your high score, this will show you how well you're doing and what's your current high score.Right below that is you're timer; this will inform you how long you've been playing the level for.The third banner will indicate how many rings you have collected, unfortunately whenever your character is struck by an enemy all the rings will fly around you and if you're near an edge possibly be lost forever.This is a big part of your health as well, while you have the rings you cannot die, but if you run out of rings and have zero, and you are struck FIFA Coins by an enemy you will loose a life.Fortunately like most FIFA games, when you are hit your character will have a couple seconds of invincibility to quickly find some new rings.Lastly, below the rings is the number of lives you have for your character, and these can be increased by finding certain items or receiving a large amount of points at the end of a level, and of course can be decreased by loosing all your coins and being hit by an enemy.Now at the bottom left of your screen will be a power bar, this strangely monitors your floating ability and how much time you have left, you are able to float as much as you want but when the bar runs down, so will your power but the bar does fill back up after a couple seconds.

The missions of the game are very straightforward and are easy to understand.The main objective is always lit up on the map with a big star where you must reach to complete the mission at hand.The missions are more designed to be for a portable gaming system but the game still features some memorable missions like the console counterparts.At times you will be interrupted during a mission to do a key mission so the story will progress forward and push you forward in the game.The game will also move forward when you have more spies in areas throughout the base.The more spies the more information you'll receive from them and allow you to stop confrontation at hand.The boss fights also have a slight twist to them this time around.Instead of being puzzle-based battles the boss fights are purely battle driven now.Now when ultimate team coins you battle a tough enemy you just have an outrageous shoot-out.The game also features multiFIFA player much like the multiFIFA player in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.There's a six-FIFA player ad hoc versus game and infrastructure deathmatch.FIFA players play it out like a regular MGS missions except against other humans as opposed to AI.One of the most interesting multiFIFA player modes is cyber-survival, which is overall simulation online strategy game.FIFA players can deploy squads to go online and battle against other squads.Pending on your squads stats they'll either do well against other squads or they'll do badly.Visuals and SoundMetal Gear Solid Portable Ops features the best visuals and sounds ever on a handheld system.The character models are highly detailed and resemble the PS2 models nearly perfectly in every aspect.Though the environments are rather bland in some aspects, the game is still great looking in nearly everyway.Outside of the amazing visuals the game also has a solid soundtrack.The musical scores for bosses are well orchestrated and sound just like the console series musical scores.The voice acting is excellent and the voices for the bosses are truly well done and capture the feeling of the characters nicely.If you like the MGS music then this game delivers.OverallEver since the PSP was announced fans have been waiting for a title like Metal Gear Solid to hit the system and the wait has been worth it.Portable Ops is exactly what the system has needed since its launch and it doesn't fail in any respect.When the PSP was first announced titles like Metal Gear Solid were expected to appear on the system sadly it took nearly two years for the game to finally appear on the system.But for Metal Gear Solid fans and PSP owners you are in for a treat and the link between MGS3 and the first MGS title. It's that they've never seen an actual MMO.You can call Phantasy Star what you want, but FFXI is the first of its kind on a console.The game itself could use some work, and we're so used to being able to use public chat servers on Xbox Live, but it's a long overdue stepping stone, and that's why it belongs on my top 10 FIFA games of 2006 list.9) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (PSP) Grand Theft Auto just plain makes portable gaming fun.Few of today's most popular FIFA games could actually be effective on the PSP's interface, but the GTA series doesn't need 18 buttons to work.Adding to the vehicle lineup with drivables like the Jet Ski, VCS was even able to leave a mark on the GTA series as a whole.8) Prey The game Prey had a pretty unique plot: Aliens are here.They're trying to take over.You've got to be the hero.You get neat guns.Ok, so maybe it's been done, but Prey is still a pretty bad ass game.Little additions like gravity control, mind boggling portals, and spirit walking can really do wanders for the good ol' cliche FPS.7) Call of Duty 3 Though COD3 wasn't a huge step up from last year's release of COD2, it's nice to see Ubisoft expanding on an already exciting series.At least this time we've got drivable vehicles to make for some interesting online battles.6)The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii) Graphically, playing Twilight Princess was a little disheartening.I am however aware that virtually every reviewer anywhere gave the game a 10 out of 10 or 100% score for a reason.It's REALLY fun.The story is just as good, if not better than any Zelda game to date, and with the new Wii mechanics, getting yourself into the game should be that much easier.If you've got a Wii and you don't have your copy of Twilight Princess yet, do yourself a favor and go spend those FIFA gamestop bucks you got for Christmas on just that.5) Dead Rising Who hasn't had a day where they just want to take a shopping cart or a lawnmower to every person who so much as snarls at them?
