Why not, for example, just ship the units out when they were ready and push the SDK update live when it's ready? The earlier 0.3 Oculus SDK code branch wasnt truly ready for DK2. Wii U is almost here, and the Wii is quickly approaching some state of irrelevance. But if you don’t want to release new games on a console that hardly gives you the right to release old games and call them new and charge a full $50 for them at retail. This is where we insert a snarky comment about putting lipstick on a pig. A wag of the finger to EA for this one (though one suspects Colbert would, if he covered this sort of thing, give a Tip o’ the Hat.) I’ll be honest. I don’t think most sports games change enough from year to year to really justify full-priced releases. Like the endless stream of Call of Duty games, each new iteration of these sports games feels a lot more like an update than it does a new release. Some enterprising developer should do just that: come out with a “core” football or soccer or basketball game and then release DLC each year that updates the rosters and adds in little extras. This would be cheaper on the development side and add more value for customers. You’d make a one-time $59.99 purchase and then pay only $10 or $15 a year on top of that rather than buying an entirely new game to get updated content. Meanwhile the game itself wouldn’t change much over say a four or five year period. My kids are huge soccer fans (you may know this if you’re a regular reader) and they’ve been counting down to the first game (Brazil beat Croatia) for months. They’ve made posters and charts and insisted on buying souvenirs, including a stuffed version of the Fuleco, the armadillo who serves as the current World Cup mascot. And predictably, they have peppered me with questions, mostly about FIFA since the initials appear on everything from Fuleco to the game balls. What is it? Who runs it? And their favorite question: who gets to keep all of that money? I mumbled through some explanation about how it’s sort of the NFL of world soccer and then realized that I wasn’t actually sure about the details. So I did some digging. If you, like me, wonder exactly what FIFA is and what it does, here’s the scoop: FIFA is an abbreviated version of F eacute;d eacute;ration Internationale de Football Association, the international governing body of soccer. Soccer is, of course, called football everywhere else in the world except in the U.S., where we call American football, football. FIFA has as its primary goal “to improve the game of football constantly and promote it globally in the light of its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values, particularly through youth and development programmes.” A truly international organization, it’s been referred to as the “United Nations of Football.” Today, it employs about 310 people from over 35 nations and consists of 209 member associations. That’s a huge leap from its humble beginnings in 1904 when it served just seven member associations (France, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland). The management of FIFA is central, set up a bit like our own government, with a Congress (legislative body), Executive Committee (executive body) and General Secretariat (administrative body). The FIFA Congress is made up of representatives from each affiliated member association. It meets about once a year fifa16coinbuy and each of the member associations gets one vote on matters of importance no matter how big or dominant the association (so yes, that means that Spain gets the same vote as Cameroon). Generally, the Congress does exactly what you’d expect: passes the laws that govern the organization and approves the annual report (including the budget). Lots of cash. So much cash that the Ghanian soccer team, popularly called the Black Stars, filled a charter plane with it. The amount? $3 million. And yes, not in checks or other form of payment. Cash. Why? That’s how the players wanted to be paid for participating in the World Cup. More than $3 million in appearance fees was to be split among the 23 players on the team. The money represented an advance for the team’s bonuses earned for playing in the Cup. And by advance, I mean that the team wanted to be paid upfront which is totally normal understandable. To prove its point, the team threatened to boycott their all important game against Portugal unless the cash showed up first. That would have been embarrassing. Ghanian President, John Dramani Mahama, apparently felt it was less embarrassing to pay the players in cash delivered by chartered jet. So that’s what he did, calling it “necessary.” That meant that Ghanian soccer players got paid as the world watched. It was such a public display that defender John Boye was photographed kissing a stack of money after it arrived by armed escort while phenom Christian Atsu made jokes about stashing the cash in bags. Since the money arrived, the team did finally acquiesce and play against Portugal where, it can’t be ignored, they lost, 2-1. One of the goals attributed to Portugal was an own goal scored by Boye who apparently kissed the cash hello but his chance at a world title goodbye.
