Real or not: If you’re sensing a trend about bullpens on this Opening Day, you’re right. There was a lot of shoddy relief work. Knebel had a monster season in 2017, making the All-Star team while striking out 126 batters in 76 innings. He was worked hard, appearing in 76 games and tiring in September, but he should be fine. I want to point out something else that allowed the Brewers to win this game:

Credit to the Oakland bullpen and Boog Powell’s triple off Justin Upton’s glove (he should have caught it) that led to the winning run, but let’s focus on Ohtani. One thing he did in this game was drop the high leg kick he had in spring training, when he went 4-for-32.
That could be a temporary thing until he gets his timing down, as the leg kick is used to help deliver more power. Real or not: Phillies fans were apoplectic about new manager Gabe Kapler pulling Aaron Nola with one out in the sixth inning after just 68 pitches. It did seem like a quick hook, but the bullpen has to hold a 5-0 lead. Instead, Freddie Freeman greeted Hoby Milner with a two-run homer and four of the five relievers Kapler used gave up runs, including three home runs. Ouch. The story, however, was the Atlanta offense: Is it good? I’m not sure about that. Markakis didn’t homer all spring and hit just eight in 160 games last year. The combination of Ender Inciarte, Ozzie Albies and Freeman is a nice top of the lineup, but it’s pretty thin after that, at least until Ronald Acuna gets called up. They need their catchers to produce again and Dansby Swanson to make big strides.
Real or not: Are the Giants for real? A good bullpen will help given the issues there in 2017. Closer Mark Melancon is on the DL, but Hunter Strickland may be the better option at this point anyway. This much is certain: With Madison Bumgarner likely out until early May and Jeff Samardzija sidelined for three weeks or so, it’s critical for the Giants not to fall way behind before May even kicks in. They play the Dodgers 10 times by the end of April and the Diamondbacks six times, with three-game series against the Angels and Nationals. It’s the first 2018 regular-season edition of Real or Not, and Mr. Stanton immediately lived up to the hype. Got 161 to go.” Here’s the rest of what happened on an exciting Opening Day: The game: Cubs at Marlins What happened: The Cubs hit three home runs -- including Ian Happ’s homer on the first pitch of the major league season -- and the bullpen threw 4⅔ scoreless innings in an 8-4 victory.
Real or not: Yes, Virginia, the Cubs are better than the Marlins. In fact, somebody on our baseball staff asked this question: How many players on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster would make the Cubs’ roster? J.T. Realmuto would make it -- although only as the backup to Willson Contreras -- but he’s on the DL. Kyle Barraclough and Drew Steckenrider are pretty good relievers; maybe they beat out Justin Wilson or Pedro Strop or Brian Duensing. Starlin Castro maybe edges out Ben Zobrist or Tommy La Stella as a backup infielder, although La Stella was excellent off the bench last year. Justin Bour would be a nice pinch hitter, but the Cubs already have a better first baseman and manager Joe Maddon demands defensive versatility. So, what, maybe three guys? Four if you include Realmuto?
Real or not: Martinez battled the strike zone all day, walking six batters, but the concern here is the Cardinals’ bullpen, which struggled in the clutch last season (18th in win probability added) and started the season with projected closer Luke Gregerson on the DL. Before the game, reports broke that the team had agreed to a deal with free-agent closer Greg Holland on a one-year contract. Holland saved 41 games with the
Rockies in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he also was handled with kid gloves and threw just 57 innings, so he’s not a guy you count on for four- or five-out saves. There are some quality arms here, including rookie Jordan Hicks and his 100-mph heater, but manager Mike Matheny’s ability to get the best out of them remains a question. Maybe new pitching coach Mike Maddux will help.hat happened: George Springer led off with a home run and Justin Verlander cruised through six scoreless innings in a 4-1 win to push his regular-season record with the Astros to 6-0 in six starts with a 0.90 ERA.

The Brewers needed help on offense after a dismal second half, so the additions of Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain could be difference-makers. If the staff pitches like it did in 2017 and the offense takes a step up behind the two newcomers, watch out, because the Brewers' strength could be in their bullpen, at least at the back end. Closer Corey Knebel and flamethrower Josh Hader lead a solid group. Ninety or more wins is a possibility.
Worst case: The Brewers could be Andrew MacDonald Youth jersey exposed in the back end of their rotation, as they did very little to improve in that Dan Bailey Authentic Jersey important area. If Jake Odorizzi and Lance Lynn post sub-4.00 ERAs, the rotation will be much better.
Worst case: The Twins went from 59 to 85 wins, so maybe their true talent level is somewhere in between. Odorizzi and Lynn could easily struggle, and the rotation could remain an issue. Fernando Rodney implodes as closer. Buxton is more first-half Buxton than second-half Buxton. The Royals, White Sox and Tigers aren't as awful as expected, and the Twins don't go 34-23 against them again.
Make-or-break player: Jose Berrios showed flashes of ace potential in going 14-8 with a 3.89 ERA, especially when that curveball is bending knees. If all that happens, the high-ceiling Nats will slip and fall on their high floor, making yet another early playoff exit.

The most dramatic example is perhaps the second act of pitcher Rich Hill, his late-career comeback fueled by pivoting away from the traditional notion that the fastball must be the primary pitch. Hill's primary pitch is his best pitch, the curveball. Others have followed pitch-tracking technology, which is giving them the hard data to influence what pitches they use how often and changes in their pitch sequencing.
While some breakouts on the mound will still follow a more traditional route --a young talent maturing and better harnessing his stuff, for instance -- others will use data more and more to test conventional thinking and experiment. Which means that we might be in an era of more breakouts. The initial success of the Tampa Bay Rays and other teams in shifting defenders around the infield is now universally copied. What seemed like mad-scientist stuff back then now seems entirely routine.
It’s possible that the extra layer of analysis could soon extend into the outfield with some teams. Some evaluators have mulled the concept of using a four-man outfield under certain circumstances as a way of reducing the odds of big damage. More and more hitters and coaches have focused on developing swing mechanics of getting the ball in the air, and the addition of one more fielder to the outfield might be increasingly considered.
First and foremost -- and quite obviously -- the hitter would have to have demonstrated a tendency to generate fly balls to his pull side. The game situation would have to be right: mostly with two outs, some evaluators mentioned, when the odds of an extended rally are greatly diminished. If a slow, lumbering slugger opted to cut down on his swing to single through an open infield, rather than swing big, that could be a plus for the defense.
One possible example: If the right-handed hitting Dozier came to the plate with two outs, a team could shift an infielder to the outfield, perhaps with the left fielder playing closer to the foul line, the center moved to deep left-center, the right fielder now moved to center, and the infielder -- theoretically the least adept of the four in the outfield -- in right field, where Dozier is least likely to hit the ball.
You’d have to have the right personnel to make it more palatable for the defense, as one evaluator noted. The Chicago Cubs have great options to add a fourth outfielder from play to play because of the experience of Ben Zobrist and Kris Bryant in the infield and outfield. On the other hand, the Twins might see less benefit in shifting Miguel Sano out of the infield in specific situations.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The New England Patriots didn't talk in-depth with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels about his role going forward with the team, or adjust his contract, until two days after Super Bowl LII. That turn of events, McDaniels told The Boston Globe, led him to change his mind after having verbally agreed to become the Colts' coach.
The Patriots' late, aggressive pursuit of McDaniels worked out for them in this case, but the club won't have the luxury of waiting until the last minute to make such an aggressive pitch if NFL owners would have passed a rule at the annual league meetings to allow teams to formalize contracts with coaches whose teams are still in the playoffs. The measure was tabled on Tuesday.
Some were calling it the "McDaniels Rule," but his situation is far from the only one in recent years where teams have verbal agreements with coaches whose teams are still in the playoffs, and those clubs leave themselves vulnerable in the event things change. Consider how the rule, if it had been in place for 2018, could have forced the Patriots' hand in the case of McDaniels. Once the Colts decided that McDaniels was their choice in mid-January, they could have executed a contract with him and locked it in before the Patriots ever addressed his role in-depth or adjusted his contract. If Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy do something like that, it's probably a successful season in Baltimore. If Brent Honeywell and Jose De Leon both stay healthy for the Rays -- well, OK, scrap that.
But all three teams are teetering between bad enough to trade and good enough to try, and no matter which way the season tips, success will depend on each team's star: Manny Machado, a pending Orioles free agent; Josh Donaldson, a pending Blue Jays free agent; and Chris Archer, who has been on the trade market long enough to seem stale. Donaldson could win the MVP award. Machado could win the MVP award. Archer could win the Cy Young Award. In which case each could push an overachieving team into the playoffs. Of all the teams that have been rebuilding over the past couple of years, the Phillies look like the surest bet to follow the Astros and Cubs to the World Series. As a story, this has been perfectly paced and plotted, through obstacles and separations and payoffs withheld, a story both of predictability (the young prodigies grow into mature heroes) and unpredictability (the Nats, with these two historic forces, with the second-best record in baseball over half a decade, have failed to win a single postseason series). One assumes a story like this is moving toward a huge payoff. But Harper (along with Daniel Murphy and Gio Gonzalez) is about to hit free agency. This could be the final act of the Strasburg/Harper story. A World Series victory is the finish you're counting on. An appearance in it is the bare minimum. A "to be continued" -- i.e., Harper signing an extension -- would be tedious but still promising.
The Yankees are the Vegas favorites, but they're young, they're already ahead of schedule, they'll have and be a ton of fun, they'll be able to spend a lot of money next winter and they're probably entering a five-year period during which they'll win 500 games and (more than likely) at least one title. If there's a question about Darnold, it's his delivery, which is more of a windup than the other top quarterbacks'. He has a quick release, but NFL coaches are going to want him to shorten that delivery. A windup, or elongated delivery, could matter for two reasons. One is delivery speed. On Thursday in Boston, New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty and former Pats star linebacker Willie McGinest will meet with key legislators.
One of the topics of discussion will be a bill that would raise the age within the juvenile justice system. The week concludes Friday in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and former NFL wideout Anquan Boldin, among others, will participate in a Harvard University summit that will include panel discussions on criminal justice reform and related issues plaguing communities.
In January, the NFL finalized plans to partner with players on social justice issues, announcing a "Let's Listen Together" initiative that will publicize the players' work on social and racial equality. Team owners earmarked $89 million over a seven-year period for the project. A league official told ESPN's Adam Schefter that team owners will discuss the social justice platform at next week's annual league meetings in Orlando, Florida. The official also told Schefter that no vote on a policy change as it pertains to the national anthem is anticipated. "The league has been instrumental in helping us bring light to our community and the issues that are going on in them," said Davis, who believes player protests will decrease in 2018 because of the league's support.
Davis, joined by members of the Bronx public defenders, spent Tuesday meeting with legislative aides on both sides of the aisle. Part of the reason the Browns sent such a large contingent to Los Angeles is because Darnold did not throw at the scouting combine. Darnold, who will turn 21 in June, chose not to go inside when it started raining, in part because he wanted to show that he could handle the elements and because he did not think it was fair to his USC teammates to move the time of the workout. Another factor is that USC’s indoor facility is not large enough for deep passes, ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson said during the workout.
Although there were several dropped passes, Darnold was praised for his accuracy and mobility. He also focused on showing that he has worked on holding onto the ball with two hands (he had 21 fumbles in two seasons at USC). He did not seem to do anything to hurt his draft standing and might even have improved his cause. “Just being aware of all those little things and then just coming out here and ripping it,” Darnold said. “I thought I did a pretty good job.”
Darnold said during an interview with ESPN that he’s eager to go to a team that wants him. He is well aware that the Browns traded for Tyrod Taylor to be the team’s starting quarterback. “It'd be awesome to go No. 1, just because I think what the Browns are doing is really good right now, and I think they have potential to be a really good team in the future," Darnold said. "Just based on that, yeah, a part of me really wants to go 1. But at the same time, if they don't want me and they don't pick me, that's the best situation. Darnold has enough tape to show teams. He threw 57 touchdown passes to 22 interceptions and completed 64.9 percent of his passes across 24 starts. There were no red flags in any of his athletic testing at the combine (hand size was a question going in, but he measured right around average for quarterbacks). After breezing through six starts in Double-A last season, he made 21 starts at Triple-A and posted a 2.89 ERA. He's a good example of what has transformed the Yankees' system into one of the deepest in the game: a combination of scouting, analytics and player development.
Adams was a reliever his junior season at Dallas Baptist and the Yankees took him in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. Adding Allen Robinson on a three-year contract along with the signing of versatile and talented tight end Trey Burton should bring a smile to the faces of new coach Matt Nagy and second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Whether it comes to fruition on the field or not, William Gay Jersey expect an offseason worth of parallels drawn between Nagy's relationship with Trubisky and Rams coach Sean McVay's relationship with quarterback Jared Goff.

This downfield prowess could be the push Minnesota needs to get back to the Super Bowl.
Sando: The Saints re-signing Drew Brees. With much of the focus on Cousins commanding a guaranteed contract, New Orleans retained a future Hall of Fame QB under team-friendly terms, freeing up resources to address other areas. Schatz: The Colts' trade with the Jets. The Jets overpaid even on the traditional draft value chart, and they massively overpaid according to any modern analytical draft value chart. And given the need for quarterbacks at the top of the draft, that No. 6 pick will still turn into Bradley Chubb, Saquon Barkley or Quenton Nelson -- the same players the Colts would have been choosing among at No. 3.
