ARLINGTON, Texas -- If taking the Lorenzo Cain Jersey ball on Opening Day is a mark of excellence, Justin Verlander belongs to a select group. On Thursday afternoon at Globe Life Park, he became the 18th pitcher in Major League Baseball history to start 10 season openers. CC Sabathia and Felix Hernandez are the only other active pitchers who can make that claim.
Verlander’s first nine openers came as the Detroit Tigers’ resident ace, so with the rare exception, he Alex Goligoski Womens Jersey took the mound with a chill in the air. In http://www.authenticmilwaukeebrewersshop.com/Ryan-Braun-Jersey 2012, the game-time temperature at Comerica Park was 43 degrees when he pitched eight shutout innings in a win over the Boston Red Sox. A year later, it was 35 degrees with 17 mph winds when he threw five scoreless innings in a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis. Sled dogs were optional.
In Verlander’s first Opening Day start with the Houston Astros, the sun was out and the temperature crept into the low 70s, and he experienced the sensation of playing a regular-season game in late March without seeing his teammates wrapped in parkas in the dugout. “It was a nice change of pace,” Verlander said. “You don’t think about the weather when you’re out there pitching. But it’s nice to be able to feel the ball.” He is literally and figuratively warming to the next chapter of his career amid the comforts of the American League West.
Verlander shut down the Texas Rangers' lineup over six four-hit innings before Houston manager A.J. Hinch lifted him with 91 pitches in the ledger. The Astros were within an out Authentic Marcus Allen Jersey of a shutout when closer Ken Giles gave up a run on a wild pitch in the ninth to account for Texas’ only score in a 4-1 Houston victory.
This game served as a reminder why Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow jumped through so many hoops to pry Verlander loose from the Tigers in a five-player trade in late August, and it showed why the Astros were downright euphoric over having Verlander and Gerrit Cole join a rotation that already included Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers Jr. and Charlie Morton. “We have a rotation full of aces,” Houston third baseman Alex Bregman said. “Every day when we Authentic John Ross Jersey wake up, we get to play behind one of the best pitchers in the game, so it’s always going to be fun coming to the ballpark.”
Thursday’s opener featured something old and something new for the defending champions. George Springer, who was last seen demoralizing the Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitching staff in the World Series, hit a solo homer off Cole Hamels leading off the top of the first inning to give Houston a lead it never surrendered. As the Elias Sports Bureau notes, the homer off Hamels and his 2017 Opening Day dinger against Hernandez make Springer the first player to go deep to start a game in consecutive season openers.
The Astros also unveiled their four-man outfield alignment, which features Bregman stationed in left field and Josh Reddick, Jake Marisnick and Springer sliding over to enhance the Astros’ coverage in the pasture. Hinch used the strategy four times against Joey Gallo, and Texas’ big first baseman responded with three fly outs and a strikeout. The first one nestled in Bregman’s glove in left. “It’s a lot further away, and it’s harder to see,” Bregman said. “When Gallo hits you a fly ball, it’s usually very high, so it’s a little nerve-wracking. I think our front office and our coaching staff know what they’re doing, and they play the numbers, so it’s fine.”
Everything looks easier when Verlander is cutting a swath through opposing lineups, and he was efficient until the sixth inning, when he allowed back-to-back singles to Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre and had to dig deep to strike out Nomar Mazara to end the threat. Verlander averaged 95 mph with his fastball and topped out at 97, and he put up zeroes on a day when it was a challenge to throw the ball past the Texas hitters. The Rangers swung at 41 pitches and missed only nine.
The outing continued a pattern of excellence that Verlander established after joining the Astros from the Tigers. Between the regular season and the postseason, he went 9-1 with a 1.66 ERA, 81 strikeouts, 13 walks and a .164 opponents’ batting average for http://www.49ersofficialauthenticshop.com/15-pierre-garcon-super-bowl-jersey.html Houston in 2017. Not that there was anything wrong with his pitching before the trade, but he seemed invigorated by the change of scenery.
“It’s special,” Verlander said. “Opening Day is always special. There’s so much atmosphere. There’s the intensity. It’s a really unique experience, and I cherish every single one of them. The one I probably remember most is my first Opening Day [in 2006], when I wasn’t even pitching. I was just a fan sitting there and enjoying it. It was kind of a full-circle moment.”
Verlander is quickly building a fan base in Houston, and it emanates from the stands to the home clubhouse. The Astros have seen how he http://www.officialwarriorsproshop.com/patrick_mccaw_jersey.html elevates the level of performance of the entire staff with his work ethic, positive example and professional advice. He’ll be around for 33 or 34 starts this season, and his new teammates consider each one a gift and a pleasure to behold.“He’s a Hall-of-Famer-in-waiting,” Springer said. “As a player, you understand when you’re playing with greatness. And he’s it.”

allowing one hit in six innings, but the Rays improbably scored six runs in the eighth to ruin Alex Cora’s managerial debut. The Rays had lost 70 games in a row they trailed by four-plus runs, most in the majors, and were the only team not to win a game last season after trailing by at least four runs.
Real or not: So Stanton homers twice and the Boston bullpen blows a comfortable lead in disastrous fashion. I’m sure that will go over well on sports radio in Boston on Friday morning. Those guys are always very calm and not reactionary at all. Joe Kelly walked three batters and Carson Smith walked one before Denard Span cleared the bases with a triple down the right-field line. Cora explained after the game
that he didn’t want to use Craig Kimbrel before the ninth inning on Opening Day. “We talked about it before the game,” he said. “I’m not going to put him in that spot right now.” I’ll buy that. Kelly and Smith are good relievers who had bad days. The Boston pen led the majors in WPA last season while ranking second in ERA. Sure, a chunk of that was Kimbrel’s dominance, but this should be a very good pen. What happened: The Twins tied it with two runs in the ninth and escaped a bases-loaded jam Laquon Treadwell Youth jersey in the 10th thanks to a five-man infield, but Adam Jones sent Orioles fans home happy with a walk-off blast off Fernando Rodney in the 11th.
Real or not: This was a fun game, as Dylan Bundy and Jake Odorizzi locked up in a scoreless duel before the bullpens took over. Brad Brach blew the save for Baltimore, but the issue here is Minnesota’s bullpen. The Twins invested heavily to upgrade their relief group, signing Rodney, Addison Reed and Zach Duke as free agents. Is Rodney going to be the answer at closer? He’s 41, and although was very good for Arizona last season after a bad April, he still walked 4.2 per nine, so it’s always a tightrope with him. I’d say there's a 50 percent chance he lasts the season as closer.
Real or not: If you’re sensing a trend about bullpens on this Opening Day, you’re right. There was a lot of shoddy relief work. Knebel had a monster season in 2017, making the All-Star team while striking out 126 batters in 76 innings. He was worked hard, appearing in 76 games and tiring in September, but he should be fine. I want to point out something else that allowed the Brewers to win this game:
They actually Hunter Pence Womens Jersey carried 14 position players on the Opening Day roster -- including three first basemen on the bench as Ryan Braun started at first. A lot of teams are carrying just 12 position players. Well, in the 12th inning, manager Craig Counsell still had Ji-Man Choi on his bench to hit for the pitcher. He doubled with two outs and scored the winning run on Orlando Arcia’s single. Choi probably will be replaced on the roster as soon as they need another pitcher, but he helped the Brewers to one big win.
What happened: Matt Davidson became the fourth player to hit three home runs on Opening Day to power the White Sox to a 14-7 victory.Real or not: Davidson matched a record set by Dmitri Young (2005 Tigers), Tuffy Rhodes (1994 Cubs) and George Bell (1988 Blue Jays), and the White Sox tied the Opening Day record with six home runs as a team. So, is Davidson for real? The 27-year-old has power, slugging 27 home runs in 118 games last season, but he also posted a horrific .260 OBP as he hit .220 and had a 165/19 K/BB ratio. He was http://www.authenticducksjerseys.com/Authentic-Rickard-Rakell-Jersey a little better in spring http://www.officialbostonbruins.com/Adidas-Patrice-Bergeron-Jersey training, with nine walks and 19 strikeouts, and drew a walk in this game. If he doesn’t improve the walk rate and cut down the strikeouts, the raw power won’t be enough to keep him in the majors. The game: Angels at Athletics What happened: Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-5 in his major league debut, but the Oakland bullpen threw six scoreless innings as the A’s won 6-5 in 11 innings.
Real or not: Hey, Ohtani has more hits than Mike Trout, who went 0-for-6 for the first time in his career and struck out in the 11th with two runners on. Credit to the Oakland bullpen and Boog Powell’s triple off Justin Upton’s glove (he should have caught it) that led to the winning run, but let’s focus on Ohtani. One thing he did in this game was drop the high leg kick he had in spring training, when he went 4-for-32.
That could be a temporary thing until he gets his timing down, as the leg kick is used to help deliver more power. He Evander Kane Jersey singled in his first at-bat, a hard bouncer past the first baseman, grounded out to second his next http://www.raidersfootballofficialstore.com/Marshall-Newhouse-Jersey three times and then struck out against Chris Hatcher. The A’s even showed him some respect by shifting Authentic Nelson Agholor Jersey on him. He had one decent at-bat against lefty Ryan Buchter, fouling off a couple tough pitches before hitting a hard grounder. You can’t read anything into one game, but he certainly seemed focused on getting the ball in play. Like any young hitter, he just needs at-bats.
Side note: Ohtani will make history of sorts when he starts on Sunday. The last player to start a game on the mound and in the field or at DH in the same season was Rick Rhoden with the Yankees in 1988. Rhoden was a good-hitting pitcher whom manager Billy Martin started one game at DH, saying injuries had left him with no other choice. Before that, Willie Smith started one game at pitcher for the Angels in 1964 (and pitched 14 times in relief) and started 80 games in the outfield. In his case, all his pitching outings came through June 15, at which time he was moved to the outfield. Remarkably, he hit cleanup in his first start in right field and ended the season hitting .301 with a 2.84 ERA in 31⅔ innings.
Real or not: Phillies fans were apoplectic about new manager Gabe Kapler pulling Aaron Nola with one out in the sixth inning after just 68 pitches. It did seem like a quick hook, but the bullpen has to hold a 5-0 lead. Instead, Freddie Freeman greeted Hoby Milner with a two-run homer and four of the five relievers Kapler used gave up runs, including three home runs. Ouch. The story, however, was the Atlanta offense: Is it good? I’m not sure about that. Markakis didn’t homer all spring and hit just eight in 160 games last year. The combination of Ender Inciarte, Ozzie Albies and Freeman is a nice top of the lineup, but it’s pretty thin after that, at least until Ronald Acuna gets called up. They need their catchers to produce again and Dansby Swanson to make big strides.
Real or not: Are the Giants for real? A good bullpen will help given the issues there in 2017. Closer Mark Melancon is on the DL, but Hunter Strickland may be the better option at this point anyway. This much is certain: With Madison Bumgarner likely out until early May and Jeff Samardzija sidelined for three weeks or so, it’s critical for the Giants not to fall way behind before May even kicks in. They play the Dodgers 10 times by the end of April and the Diamondbacks six times, with three-game series against the Angels and Nationals. So beating Kershaw like this is a nice start. wholesale nfl jerseys from china wholesale nfl jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys |

It’s the first 2018 regular-season edition of Real or Not, and Mr. Stanton immediately lived up to the hype. In his first game that mattered with the New York Yankees, Stanton hit two home runs, including an opposite-field blast in his first at-bat to lead the Yankees to a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. You know it felt good, especially since it meant he wouldn’t have to deal with the New York media asking, “Are you feeling the pressure?” after the game like he would have if he’d gone 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
“You gotta get that first one out of the way and you Drew Doughty Authentic Jersey can stop worrying about it,” Stanton said. “It was a great day. We got 10-plus hits; we put it on ’em. I think they only got two hits. So it was a good day overall.” Here’s my takeaway from this game. Aaron Boone spent much of spring tinkering with his lineup, speculating about potential batting orders, suggesting he might hit
Aaron Judge leadoff, and then having a wrench thrown into whatever plans he may have had when Greg Bird landed on the disabled list after foot surgery. He ended up hitting Judge, Stanton and Gary Sanchez in the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 slots against Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ. I’d keep it just like that. Righty, lefty, doesn’t matter. Don’t overthink it, don’t worry about separating the right-handed batters with a lefty, don’t worry about potential bullpen matchups that may arise later in the game.
Just put the big boys right where they were in the opener: 2-3-4. Make pitchers sweat the night before about facing those three in a row. Make it difficult to work out of potential jams. It’s a lethal trio to get through. If Brett Gardner is the primary http://www.steelersofficialsstore.com/Jack_Ham_Jersey_Cheap leadoff hitter, he’s a solid on-base guy. Judge is going to hit home runs and draw a lot of walks even when he isn’t hitting home runs. That’s going to create a lot of RBI opportunities for Stanton. With Sanchez backing him up, you can’t really pitch around Stanton when there’s a base open.
What the entire lineup is going to do is make pitchers work. Gardner is always among the league leaders in pitches per plate appearance. Judge is patient and works the count. Stanton is a little http://www.rangersteamonline.com/Jesper_Fast_Jersey more aggressive, but he takes his walks as well. Happ actually pitched pretty well, but in 4⅔ innings he threw 96 pitches, even though he issued just one walk and four hits. (Gardner, Judge and Stanton saw a combined 75 pitches in their 14 plate appearances.) The Yankees are going to knock out a lot of starters early just by running up those pitch counts. Managers may not mind going to their bullpens, but that could lead to some taxed relievers by the end of a series.
It’s one game. Stanton reminded everyone about that. He said the two home runs rank high on his personal list: “They’re up there. As long as we get a little start here, keep it rolling in the series. Got 161 to go.” Here’s the rest of what happened on an exciting Opening Day: The game: Cubs at Marlins What happened: The Cubs hit three home runs -- including Ian Happ’s homer on the first pitch of the major league season -- and the bullpen threw 4⅔ scoreless innings in an 8-4 victory.
Real or not: Yes, Virginia, the Cubs are better than the Marlins. In fact, somebody on our baseball staff asked this question: How many players on the Marlins’ Opening Day roster would make the Cubs’ roster? J.T. Realmuto would make it -- although only as the backup to Willson Contreras -- but he’s on the DL. Kyle Barraclough and Drew Steckenrider are pretty good relievers; maybe they beat out Justin Wilson or Pedro Strop or Brian Duensing. Starlin Castro maybe edges out Ben Zobrist or Tommy La Stella as a backup infielder, although La Stella was excellent off the bench last year. Justin Bour would be a nice pinch hitter, but the Cubs already have a better first baseman and manager Joe Maddon demands defensive versatility. So, what, maybe three guys? Four if you include Realmuto?
Real or not: Martinez battled the strike zone all day, walking six batters, but the concern here is the Cardinals’ bullpen, which struggled in the clutch last season (18th in win probability added) and started the season with projected closer Luke Gregerson on the DL. Before the game, reports broke that the team had agreed to a deal with free-agent closer Greg Holland on a one-year contract. Holland saved 41 games with the
Rockies in his return from Tommy John surgery, but he also was handled with kid gloves and threw just 57 innings, so he’s not a guy you count on for four- or five-out saves. There are some quality arms here, including rookie Jordan Hicks and his 100-mph heater, but manager Mike Matheny’s ability to get the best out of them remains a question. Maybe new pitching coach Mike Maddux will help.hat happened: George Springer led off with a home run and Justin Verlander cruised through six scoreless innings in a 4-1 win to push his regular-season record with the Astros to 6-0 in six starts with a 0.90 ERA.
Real or not: The way Verlander pitched after a midseason mechanical change suggests he should Jim Palmer Youth jersey be right in the thick of the Cy Young race, but how about Springer as a sleeper MVP candidate? He may rank behind two of his own teammates in that area, but he’s coming off a 5.0 WAR season and is still improving. His big improvement last year was cutting his strikeout rate from 23.9 percent to 17.7 percent.
The reason I like him as Jamal Adams Womens Jersey a potential MVP is that he hit .310/.380/.613 with 27 home runs in the first half before sliding to .241/.347/.377 in the second half. That coincided with a quad injury that landed him on the DL in late July. If he can stay healthy and focused for six months, you could be looking at some insane numbers from the leadoff spot. Side note: The Astros employed a four-man outfield against Joey Gallo. That could be the hot new trend this season. Stay tuned. cheap jerseys china cheap jerseys free shipping cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys |

the offense with the power bat it missed last season, the Cardinals' best chance to break Womens Tomas Hertl Jersey into baseball's elite lies with its deep starting rotation. St. Louis needs runs to hang with the deep rosters of the Cubs, Dodgers and Nationals, but if the Cards break through with a surprise NL pennant, it'll be because they outpitched their chief rivals with more high-quality innings from their rotation than their opponents can muster.
Worst case: If Ozuna returns to his pre-2017 levels, it might lead to a worsened attack. That's not because the old version of Ozuna was a bad player. No, it's more because last year's Cardinals outfield was actually pretty good and needs the improved Ozuna to up its production. Meanwhile, for all that rotation depth we're emphasizing, the Cardinals are headed into the season without a clear-cut bullpen pecking order. Maybe it works, or maybe leads start disappearing en masse.
Make-or-break player: After missing the entire 2017 season, this much remains true of pitcher Alex Reyes: No one on the Redbirds' staff can match his upside. Reyes' role for the coming season remains unclear while the club http://www.usasoccershops.com/graham-zusi-world-cup-jersey tries to figure out the best way to leverage his immense talent while protecting him during his first season after elbow surgery. A healthy and resilient Reyes could be the ingredient that allows the St. Louis pitching staff to crystallize into something special. -- Doolittle
Best case: The best player in baseball not only is the best player in baseball but also has his best season -- not unreasonable, given that Mike Trout set career highs in OBP and slugging last year (albeit in a year shortened by injury). Shohei Ohtani is the real deal on the mound and contributes at DH. The six-man rotation works. With Andrelton Simmons, Zack Cozart, Ian Kinsler and Martin Maldonado, the Angels http://www.authenticwildstore.com/-14-justin-williams-jersey_c-447.html are the best defensive team in the majors. They win 95 games and the AL West.
Worst case: Trout is great, and everyone else isn't. The Angels end up with the worst production in the league at first base and DH with Albert Pujols, Ohtani and friends. Ohtani struggles on the mound, and Garrett Richards makes just six starts for a third straight season. The Angels finish under .500, and once again, it's a Trout-free October. Make-or-break player: It has to be Ohtani. The Angels are counting on him for 25 or so starts at a high level and, given that they jettisoned C.J. Cron, to serve as a semi-regular DH as well. Ohtani could end up the most exciting player in the league or an overhyped disappointment. -- Schoenfield
The Brewers needed help on offense after a dismal second half, so the additions of Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain could be difference-makers. If the staff pitches like it did in 2017 and the offense takes a step up behind the two newcomers, watch out, because the Brewers' strength could be in their bullpen, at least at the back end. Closer Corey Knebel and flamethrower Josh Hader lead a solid group. Ninety or more wins is a possibility.
Worst case: The Brewers could be Andrew MacDonald Youth jersey exposed in the back end of their rotation, as they did very little to improve in that Dan Bailey Authentic Jersey important area. Chase Anderson and Zach Davies are solid, but the team will miss righty Jimmy Nelson while he recovers from shoulder surgery. There's no covering for holes in the starting staff unless the Brewers are willing to abuse Hader, who can pitch multiple innings out of the pen. The lack of starting depth could drop the http://www.baseballcardinalsonline.com/WOMENS-KEITH-HERNANDEZ-JERSEY.html Brewers' win total into the mid-to-low 80s.
Make-or-break player: Free-agent addition Jhoulys Chacin could be a key for the Brewers. The 30-year-old produced a nifty 1.84 ERA this spring after coming over from San Diego, where he made 32 starts last season. Considering the Brewers' lack of depth in Womens Tom Compton Jersey the starting staff -- at least at the major league level -- they'll need that kind of durability out of Chacin to compete. If Nelson returns to form, it will take some pressure off the other starters, but for now, the newcomer on the staff has a spotlight on him. -- Rogers
Don't tell the Twins that simply winning a wild card again will be enough. They could beat the Indians if the offense mashes like it did over the final two months. Logan Morrison, Brian Dozier and Miguel Sano could combine for 110 home runs, and maybe Byron Buxton becomes one of the best players in the league. If Jake Odorizzi and Lance Lynn post sub-4.00 ERAs, the rotation will be much better.
Worst case: The Twins went from 59 to 85 wins, so maybe their true talent level is somewhere in between. Odorizzi and Lynn could easily struggle, and the rotation could remain an issue. Fernando Rodney implodes as closer. Buxton is more first-half Buxton than second-half Buxton. The Royals, White Sox and Tigers aren't as awful as expected, and the Twins don't go 34-23 against them again.
Make-or-break player: Jose Berrios showed flashes of ace potential in going 14-8 with a 3.89 ERA, especially when that curveball is bending knees. If the changeup improves -- batters slugged .581 against it -- he'll be tougher against lefties, and he'll become the unquestioned No. 1 starter. -- Schoenfield cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys from china wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys from china cheap jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys from china |

the fourth-best win percentage in franchise history, and given that almost everybody is back, it's World Series or bust for a team that hasn't won it all since 1948. In a dream scenario, Corey Danny DeKeyser Authentic Jersey Kluber wins his third Cy Young Award, Francisco Lindor or Jose Ramirez wins the AL MVP, Francisco Mejia wins Rookie of the Year, and Cody Allen or Andrew Miller records the final out of the season.
Worst case: The rotation is too good to collapse unless there is a slew of injuries (and Danny Salazar is already fighting a sore shoulder), but maybe the offense falls apart, especially if Edwin Encarnacion suddenly gets old, Ramirez regresses to good rather than great, Bradley Zimmer doesn't hit, and Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis can't stay on the field.
Make-or-break player: It's no coincidence that the Indians lost in the ALDS to the Yankees when Kluber pitched through a back issue and was ineffective, getting shelled in Game 2 and failing to get past the fourth inning in Game 5. If the Indians are to win the World Series, they'll need a healthy and dominant Kluber in October. -- David Schoenfield
Best case: Speedsters Adam Eaton and Trea Turner both play 150-plus games, wreaking http://www.officialyankeesproshop.com/Mariano_Rivera_Jersey havoc atop the Nats lineup and helping Bryce Harper go over 100 RBIs for the first time. Way over. In fact, Harper becomes the first NL player since Sammy Sosa to crack the 150-RBI mark as he http://www.officialtigerstore.com/Miguel_Cabrera_Jersey wins his second MVP award. Stephen Strasburg makes 33 starts, plus another five in the playoffs, and the Nats -- who have never won a single playoff series -- win three this time.
Worst case: Daniel Murphy's knee issues linger longer than expected, Eaton's surgically repaired ACL falters, and Harper gets dinged up again and/or crumbles under the weight of walk-year pressure. On top of that, Washington loses a key player to a freak injury at precisely the wrong time for a third straight season (see: Wilson Ramos in '16, Harper in '17). If all that happens, the high-ceiling Nats will slip and fall on their high floor, making yet another early playoff exit.
Make-or-break Womens William Nylander Jersey player: Anthony Rendon. A versatile hitter who was one of only five big leaguers with more walks than whiffs last year, his steady glove work gets overlooked at a position that has been home to flashy fielders such as Nolan Arenado and Manny Machado. On a loaded Washington roster, the 27-year-old third baseman might be the best of the bunch. He's certainly the most valuable -- at least he was last season, when his 6.9 fWAR was not only tops on the team but also best in the National League. -- Matz
Best case: If the Cubs are as good on the playing field as they are on paper, then winning 100 games is not out of the question. They're talented and deep in most areas and had little drama in camp, as they boast established players all over the field. A not impossible scenario has seven position players hitting at least 20 home runs. Bottom line: The Cubs were good before they added Yu Darvish. Now? They could really be special again.
Worst case: It could take just one starting pitcher to go down for the Cubs to leak water in their boat, and if Brandon Morrow doesn't take to closing -- and/or several relievers aren't up to snuff -- then some demoralizing losses could follow. Like most bullpens on contending teams, the Cubs have a collection of good arms, but almost all have had their ups and downs or have been hurt in the past. Another thing to watch is how the offense fares against great pitching.
Make-or-break player: The offense is too deep to rely on one player, and the starting staff is top-heavy, so a smooth start to the year lands on Morrow's shoulders. The former starter has had his arm problems in the past, but the Cubs saw a dominant setup man all last season with the Dodgers and snared him to be their guy in the ninth inning. If he succeeds, the team is on easy street. If Joe Maddon has to go to Plan B, it could put the bullpen in a state http://www.authenticoaklandathleticsshop.com/Khris-Davis-Jersey of flux. -- Jesse Rogers
Best case: J.D. Martinez lengthens -- and more significantly, strengthens -- the lineup that produced the fewest home runs in the American League last season, the top of the rotation remains healthy, and the many players who underperformed last year relative to their 2016 numbers bounce back in a big way. If all of those things happen, the Red Sox will have more than enough to three-peat as AL East champs and actually go deep in the postseason this time.
Worst case: Like any team, the Red Sox could be torpedoed Ondrej Pavelec Jersey by injuries to a cornerstone player or two. But attitude could derail them, too. In hindsight, several players admitted that last year's team was too tightly wound, weighed down by the daily pressures of winning in Boston. First-year manager Alex Cora was hired to bring a more positive atmosphere and to communicate more effectively with players than predecessor John Farrell. His ability to do those things will matter even more than his understanding of X's and O's.
Make-or-break player: The choice here could easily be first baseman/DH Hanley Ramirez, who ranked as one of the worst players in the majors last season by wins above replacement (minus-0.4, according to FanGraphs). But we'll go with $217 million lefty David Price. If healthy, Price will pair with Chris Sale to give the Sox a dominant one-two punch atop the rotation. But Price also must be a more positive influence in the clubhouse. His "us-against-the-world" act last season wore thin quickly. -- Scott Lauber cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys china |

(Editor's note: Because the rankings were voted on by a panel -- David Schoenfield, Eric Karabell, Tim Kurkjian, Bradford Authentic Larry Nance Jersey Doolittle and Sarah Langs -- they might not match Szymborski's projected finishes.)
Best case: Ace Justin Verlander not only picks up where he left off last season but also helps new Astro Gerrit Cole rediscover his inner-first-rounder. Carlos Correa keeps all Larry Fitzgerald Womens Jersey his ligaments intact and gives teammate Jose Altuve a run for his money in trying to become just the second AL player this century to win back-to-back MVP titles. Houston becomes the first team since 2000 to repeat as World Series champs.
Worst case: Two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani goes 6-0 versus the Astros (including a perfect game), while hitting .573 with eight homers off Houston hurlers, helping the Angels become the first team ever to go 19-0 against a division rival. Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers miss time once again, and even worse, they infect Verlander with the injury bug. The Astros become the 10th squad since 2000 to miss the playoffs the season after winning it all.
Make-or-break player: The Stros went 81-39 when Correa was healthy (.675). During the six weeks he missed due to a thumb injury, they were 20-22 (.476). No wonder the 23-year-old shortstop finished 17th in the MVP voting, despite playing just 109 games. Crazy thing is, based on his 5.2 fWAR (seventh in AL), Correa should've finished even higher. -- Eddie Matz
Best case: It's championship or bust for a Dodgers team that came one stinking http://www.officialauthenticbroncostore.com/Nike-Shane-Ray-Jersey.html win from taking it all in 2017. While no one in L.A. would admit it, what might aid that cause is if a couple of starters beyond Clayton Kershaw prove so adept at navigating beyond 18 batters that it convinces Dave Roberts to give them a little longer leash in the postseason. Alex Wood, Rich Hill, Kenta Maeda, Walker Buehler -- whoever. Just two arms that can ease the burden of Roberts' postseason bullpen.
Worst case: There is so much redundancy built into the Dodgers' roster that it almost feels immune to worst-case scenarios. But they exist for everyone. All teams, even the Dodgers, rely on a certain bit of star power. If Justin Turner's wrist injury lingers and ruins his season, and if Corey Seager's elbow becomes a bigger problem, and if Cody Bellinger's strikeout-heavy cold stretches become a strikeout-heavy cold season, and if Kershaw's back problems resurface, and if Kenley Jansen's hamstring pops ... you get the picture. Still, a lot of Womens San Francisco 49ers Jersey things have to go wrong to keep the Dodgers from the ranks of the elite.
Make-or-break player: Seager is probably the closest thing to a make-or-break player that the Dodgers have. If his elbow keeps him out of the lineup or unable to make the requisite throws from shortstop -- and there has been no indication this spring that will be the case -- then it creates an unfortunate domino effect. L.A. is deep all over but less deep at shortstop than any other position. Chris Taylor can play there, as can Enrique Hernandez. But if Taylor is taken out of center field, it creates a defensive hole at that spot, and Hernandez is valuable as a utility guy but might not be able to start against http://www.jetsfootballofficialshop.com/Authentic-Jamal-Adams-Jersey righties, anyway. It would simplify matters if Seager's elbow stays sound. -- Bradford Doolittle
Best case: A 28th World Series ring is well within the realm of possibility for the Yankees in 2018. With a well-developed farm system that's paying dividends and after a few shrewd offseason moves, their power arms and power bats have them well-positioned Womens Tim Schaller Jersey to win big this season. Last year's earlier-than-expected appearance in the ALCS ought to also help first-year manager Aaron Boone's young yet experienced club.
Worst case: Health is a concern for every team at this point, but it is especially so for a team as carefully constructed as the Yankees. Such concerns caused New York to focus this spring on building defensive depth and looking for versatility both within the lineup and out of the bullpen. If the Yanks' season goes unexpectedly sideways, it likely would be due to key injuries that were tougher to overcome than anticipated.
Make-or-break player: This superstar-laden 40-man roster won't have many "break" players this year. That's especially true in the lineup, where the effects of one slumping player shouldn't have a deleterious domino effect. In fact, certain players will benefit from this deep lineup. Catcher Gary Sanchez definitely should, and he could be the biggest breakout player. His offseason defensive tweaks also should directly impact the Yankees. -- Coley Harvey

Who else got votes? Carlos Correa (3); Aaron Judge (2); Jose Ramirez (2); Manny Machado (2); Gary Sanchez (2); Francisco Lindor (2); Jose Altuve (1); Giancarlo Stanton (1)
Why is Trout still the runaway choice? "Sure, it would be more fun to pick somebody else -- Carlos Correa or George Springer or Aaron Judge or Francisco Lindor or Byron Buxton (the AL isn’t hurting for potential MVP candidates) -- but Trout is the obvious pick. He finished fourth in the voting last year, even though he missed 48 games. In spring training, he hasn’t struck out, leading to the possibility that he’s actually getting better (his K rate dropped from 26.1 percent in 2014 to 17.8 percent last year). Of course, it would help if the Angels make the playoffs." -- David Schoenfield
The most dramatic example is perhaps the second act of pitcher Rich Hill, his late-career comeback fueled by pivoting away from the traditional notion that the fastball must be the primary pitch. Hill's primary pitch is his best pitch, the curveball. Others have followed pitch-tracking technology, which is giving them the hard data to influence what pitches they use how often and changes in their pitch sequencing.
While some breakouts on the mound will still follow a more traditional route --a young talent maturing and better harnessing his stuff, for instance -- others will use data more and more to test conventional thinking and experiment. Which means that we might be in an era of more breakouts. The initial success of the Tampa Bay Rays and other teams in shifting defenders around the infield is now universally copied. What seemed like mad-scientist stuff back then now seems entirely routine.
It’s possible that the extra layer of analysis could soon extend into the outfield with some teams. Some evaluators have mulled the concept of using a four-man outfield under certain circumstances as a way of reducing the odds of big damage. More and more hitters and coaches have focused on developing swing mechanics of getting the ball in the air, and the addition of one more fielder to the outfield might be increasingly considered.
First and foremost -- and quite obviously -- the hitter would have to have demonstrated a tendency to generate fly balls to his pull side. Think http://www.footballbillsofficialstore.com/Brandon-Tate-Jersey.html about someone such as Greg Bird of the New York Yankees, whose rate of ground balls to fly balls was 0.52 in 2015, the highest of any player with at least 170 plate appearances that season. Or maybe the Minnesota Twins' Brian Dozier, who hits the ball in the air a lot and has the highest rate of pulling the ball the past two seasons.
The pitcher would have to be someone who might be more apt to induce fly balls. Probably never someone such as Marcus Stroman, who led the majors in ground ball percentage last year (60.1 percent), but more like Marco Estrada, who had the third-highest fly ball rate, at 48.2 percent. The game situation would have to be right: mostly with two outs, some evaluators mentioned, when the odds of an extended rally are greatly diminished. If a slow, lumbering slugger opted to cut down on his swing to single through an open infield, rather than swing big, that could be a plus for the defense.
One possible example: If the right-handed hitting Dozier came to the plate with two outs, a team could shift an infielder to the outfield, perhaps with the left fielder playing closer to the foul line, the center moved to deep left-center, the right fielder now moved to center, and the infielder -- theoretically the least adept of the four in the outfield -- in right field, where Dozier is least likely to hit the ball.
You’d have to have the right personnel to make it more palatable for the defense, as one evaluator noted. The Chicago Cubs have great options to add a fourth outfielder from play to play because of the experience of Ben Zobrist and Kris Bryant in the infield and outfield. On the other hand, the Twins might see less benefit in shifting Miguel Sano out of the infield in specific situations.
Placing the fielders in the spots where they most likely could catch http://www.officialpatriotsnflauthentic.com/Nike-Chris-Hogan-Jersey.html the ball would be a priority, but the shift to four in the outfield could pressure hitters out of an emotional comfort zone. The Cubs' Joe Maddon has given voice to this, noting that every time you put in Frank Vatrano Womens Jersey front of a hitter something he hasn't seen before, you can get into his head -- and that can serve the interests of the pitcher even before he throws a pitch.
A four-man outfield might also compel a slugger such as Bird or Dozier to make a choice. The hitter can alter his swing in an attempt to take advantage of the enormous spaces that would open up in a three-man infield, but in doing so, he would sacrifice the opportunity to do what hitters are increasingly focused on: driving the ball into the air for big damage.
"If you get a slugger to try to slap a single through the infield, he’s probably doing you a favor," one evaluator said. "Would you want David Ortiz trying to hit a single in the ninth inning against you rather than trying to hit a homer? Of course."Late in close games, teams will often position their corner infielders on the lines and back Calvin Pryor Jersey up their outfielders closer to the fences in what is commonly known as a no-doubles defense. The use of a four-man outfield -- against boppers who mostly hit fly balls -- could be a similar weapon, especially with two outs.
When Maddon managed the Rays, he used a four-man outfield against Ortiz and Jim Thome. The concept has mostly been dormant since then, but it's possible that it'll be revitalized at a ballpark near you.

As LeBron James, Steph Curry and other stars create a new NBA before our eyes -- while standing on the shoulders of giants -- we are presenting Authentic Jonathan Casillas Jersey the 100 NBA players who have done the most to change the way we play the game, how we talk about the game, and the culture of basketball. For this special edition of #NBArank, we asked our panel to choose the players who have influenced the game most, both on and off the court: the real game changers.
Our NBA panel -- with members from across ESPN, including TV, radio, ESPN.com, The Undefeated and ESPN The Magazine -- voted more than 11,000 times to select the top 90 game changers, and a smaller committee of writers and editors selected the final 10. Growing up http://www.panthershopnflonline.com/SUPER-BOWL-KURT-COLEMAN-JERSEY on a cotton plantation in Mississippi, Spencer Haywood knew the drudgery of working from sunup to sundown. The adolescent Haywood planted and chopped cotton for a pittance. After being thrust into hard and unfair labor as a child, Haywood as a young adult went on to challenge the unfair labor order of sports. It was a challenge that still benefits players some 50 years later.
At age 19, he led Team USA to a surprising gold medal at the 1968 Olympics. Desperate to support himself and his family, Haywood skipped the rest of his college years and joined the ABA for the 1969-70 season, winning MVP and ROY honors. The restless Haywood then jumped to the NBA for the 1970-71 season.
The league's legal attempts to enforce its four-year college rule on Haywood failed and established the "hardship case" rule that allowed underclassmen to enter the NBA draft. By age 25, Haywood had been selected to one ABA first team and two NBA http://www.officialhawkstore.com/Mike_Muscala_Jersey first teams. Since then he has defeated drug addiction and continues to speak out against the exploitation of college athletes by the NCAA. -- Curtis Harris
The Point God has nearly perfected the position, making extreme efficiency his trademark. On one end he's a precision playmaker and scorer who can toss alley-oops or play off the ball and sink jumpers, and on the other a dogged defender and pickpocket.
A leader for teammates and coaches who appreciate his commanding edge, CP3 also isn't for everyone. "Chris is a militant, and I mean that in a good way," Houston assistant coach Jeff Bzdelik told Zach Lowe.Paul's new Rockets team might give him the chance to silence a RINGZ narrative that has sometimes overshadowed his accomplishments, which include leading the league in assists four times and steals six times, plus a long string of winning seasons and two Olympic gold medals alongside pals LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony.
But even without a title, the former Lob City general has built a legacy as a voice for social causes (speaking out against police brutality at the 2016 ESPYS and ousted Clippers owner Donald Sterling in 2014) and his fellow players as the president of the NBPA. -- Austin Tedesco For better or worse, Rick Barry is a man of ironclad conviction and determination who created one of the greatest résumés in basketball history: 12 All-Star selections, 10 All-NBA/ABA nods, three Finals appearances, and a title and Finals MVP in 1975. His prickly personality in addition to his all-world scoring and passing talent made him one of pro basketball's unique figures.
The self-proclaimed "Basketball Gypsy" had played in the NBA and ABA by 1975 with three franchises in four different cities and caused a firestorm by insulting the state of Virginia. He even called the 1976 NBA Marco Estrada Youth jersey Finals for CBS even though his Warriors had just lost the West finals, and he was an outspoken commentator on the NBA scene.
His conviction could cause chaos, but that determination made him the first star to leave the NBA for the ABA and willed the Warriors to their stunning 1975 NBA title. It also made him a meticulous free throw shooter who employed the granny shot to perfection and tormented defenses with an all-around offensive repertoire. Barry's influence continued as three of his sons played in the NBA, including Brent and Jon, now national TV commentators. -- Harris
The Ice Man was one of a kind. With a smooth personality and a signature shot to die for, Gervin led the NBA in scoring four times. With his finger roll operating at all angles, no matter how impossible, Gervin was synonymous with pro basketball in San Antonio for over a decade in the 1970s and '80s. With Gervin at the helm, the Spurs missed the http://www.billsofficialonlineshop.com/YOUTH+LORENZO+ALEXANDER+JERSEY postseason just once in his 12 seasons with the team and three times made the conference finals.
Gervin's unique, stylish scoring prowess made him 12 times an All-Star, five times an All-NBA first-teamer and twice an MVP runner-up. Ice's legacy is towering in San Antonio. racking up more than 1,200 yards on 5.9 yards per carry and 18 rushing touchdowns despite regularly facing eight and nine men in the box. Barkley has a distinctive combination of size, agility and power; there just aren't many 233-pound backs with his feet and acceleration. Barkley is also a three-down back, with solid hands as a receiver and above-average blocking skills in pass protection. Making it an even easier evaluation is the fact that Barkley is a driven competitor with very good leadership skills and no off-the-field issues. He checked all the boxes at the combine, as well.
Nelson is a road grader with the size (6-foot-5, 325 pounds), strength, polish and toughness to start immediately in the NFL. He seems like one of the safer prospects at this point and appears a lock to go in the top 10.
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The New England Patriots didn't talk in-depth with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels about his role going forward with the team, or adjust his contract, until two days after Super Bowl LII. That turn of events, McDaniels told The Boston Globe, led him to change his mind after having verbally agreed to become the Colts' coach.
The Patriots' late, aggressive pursuit of McDaniels worked out for them in this case, but the club won't have the luxury of waiting until the last minute to make such an aggressive pitch if NFL owners would have passed a rule at the annual league meetings to allow teams to formalize contracts with coaches whose teams are still in the playoffs. The measure was tabled on Tuesday.
Some were calling it the "McDaniels Rule," but his situation is far from the only one in recent years where teams have verbal agreements with coaches whose teams are still in the playoffs, and those clubs leave themselves vulnerable in the event things change. Consider how the rule, if it had been in place for 2018, could have forced the Patriots' hand in the case of McDaniels. Once the Colts decided that McDaniels was their choice in mid-January, they could have executed a contract with him and locked it in before the Patriots ever addressed his role in-depth or adjusted his contract. One veteran Colts reporter noted how the Patriots' late blitz actually put McDaniels in a Kevin Mchale Womens Jersey tough spot.
Why didn't the Patriots approach him earlier with their intentions?Bill Belichick answered that, saying that the team's primary focus was on the playoff games and what it took to win them. But if McDaniels had been allowed to sign a contract with the Colts at the time, perhaps the team's approach would have been different if keeping him. That is something to consider as the league considers this rule change.
As for what it means to retain McDaniels and keep the team's offensive coaching staff in place, Kraft said Monday, "Very important. I can't tell you how happy I am he is coming back. I think he’s the best offensive coordinator, and he's shown that when he’s been with us. He has a great football intellect. We're really happy he decided to stay with us." Sean Payton offered a strong endorsement of youth football Tuesday despite growing safety concerns around the sport.
The New Orleans Saints coach, whose son, Connor, is a high school junior in the Dallas area, was asked by The MMQB's Peter King why a "mother in Dubuque, Iowa" should allow her son to play football. "A mother in Dubuque, Iowa, and a father in New Orleans and Dallas want their sons to play football because of the lessons," Payton said during his annual media session at the NFL meetings in Orlando. "So many life lessons. It's a safe sport. It teaches leadership. It teaches grit and overcoming adversity."
Payton brought up the example of players like his son maybe losing out on a starting job, then continuing to practice and fight."And then you get those opportunities to have success and you realize it's just like life," Payton said. "So I think it brings so much http://www.pittsburghpenguinsofficialonline.com/Adidas-Jake-Guentzel-Jersey to the character and the building of a character of an individual. And it might be flag football until a certain age. ... But it's the greatest sport for our kids, and we can and are making it safe. And I think the biggest thing is the information, not the misinformation. And I think the rewards far outweigh the negative."
Payton said Connor played tackle football at a young age because he felt good about his coaches at the time. But another high-profile Saint -- quarterback Drew Brees -- is one of the nation's leading advocates for children playing flag football, as he has made it a mission to try to save the sport for future generations. Brees and longtime business partner Chris Stuart started the coed Football 'N' America youth flag football league last year, and they have said they hope it can become a nationwide league.
Instead, Suh will just go to Los Angeles to form what surely must be the most terrifying pair of interior disruptors on one defensive line in Garrett Celek Womens Jersey recent memory. There were concerns about L.A.'s pass rush after the Rams traded away Robert Quinn, but Suh and Aaron Donald should be downright unblockable against the weak underbelly of NFL pass-protectors, the league's interior linemen. They've already sacked Russell Wilson four times and the season hasn't even started yet.
Are there reasons to Josh Harding Jersey think that the pairing might not play out as well as the name value sounds? Three, I think. One is that Suh is genuinely coming off of his worst season since 2011, when he was suspended for two games -- the only two he has missed in his professional http://www.giantsfootballofficialprostore.com/giants+doug+kotar+jersey career. Suh has been able to stay remarkably healthy for an interior lineman, but he also has played a ton of snaps by the age of 30. Since entering the league in 2010, he has played 6,773 defensive snaps, more than any other defensive lineman in football. Just three linemen -- Suh, Calais Campbell and Cameron Jordan -- have topped 6,000 snaps over that span. wholesale nfl jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys from china cheap jerseys china |

likely be strangely defined and hard to predict. If Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez throw 380 innings with a combined ERA below 3.00, it's probably a successful season in Toronto. If Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy do something like that, it's probably a successful season in Baltimore. If Brent Honeywell and Jose De Leon both stay healthy for the Rays -- well, OK, scrap that.
But all three teams are teetering between bad enough to trade and good enough to try, and no matter which way the season tips, success will depend on each team's star: Manny Machado, a pending Orioles free agent; Josh Donaldson, a pending Blue Jays free agent; and Chris Archer, who has been on the trade market long enough to seem stale. Donaldson could win the MVP award. Machado could win the MVP award. Archer could win the Cy Young Award. In which case each could push an overachieving team into the playoffs. But more likely, each could bring a Pat Sims Youth jersey package of prospects back in a franchise-revitalizing July trade. Either way.
Of all the teams that have been rebuilding over the past couple of years, the Phillies look like the surest bet to follow the Astros and Cubs to the World Series. They've graduated young prospects into semi-stardom (Rhys Hoskins and Aaron Nola), they've got one of the top five farm systems in baseball, they've got tons of payroll flexibility and they've begun adding very good veterans. They were the youngest team in the league last year, and they weren't even that bad. The Cubs and Astros won 73 and 70 games, respectively, in 2014; they won 97 and 86 in 2015, each making the playoffs and blowing past their projections. It's not outlandish.
The Phillies project to be around a .500 team this season. Like the Cubs and Astros, they could jump ahead of schedule and compete this year, especially after adding Jake Arrieta late in the winter. If they don't, they probably just have to make sure nothing breaks, and they'll head into next season as the trendy pick -- especially if the Nationals take big losses in the offseason.
Both teams' odds took hits over the offseason (the A's started at 80-1, Pirates at 75-1), but neither team is hopelessly bad: The PECOTA projection system, for instance, has the A's winning 76 games (ahead of the Rangers) and the Pirates winning 78 (same as the Rockies). Last year's Twins and Diamondbacks were each projected to win 78 and they each made the playoffs. And both teams have at least a
handful of guys who have either http://www.officialtitansfootballshop.com/titans+jack+conklin+jersey been stars in the recent past (Starling Marte), looked like they were maybe turning into stars in the recent past (Gregory Polanco, Jameson Taillon) or played like stars for extended periods in the recent past (Matt Olson, Matt Chapman, maybe kind of Sean Manaea and Josh Bell). You have to squint to see four great players on either of these teams, but you don't have to squint so hard that your eyes hurt. Or they'll be bad -- each team has, after all, traded away its ace pitcher in the past nine months. It's not likely either team will be really good or really bad, which makes http://www.officialusahockeysshop.com/Cheap_Olympic_Derek_Stepan_Jersey it Alex Lewis Jersey not likely either team's season will look productive in retrospect, but it's possible.
The Reds had the fifth- or sixth-best offense in the NL last year, with breakouts from Scott Schebler (30 homers), Scooter Gennett (27) and Eugenio Suarez (26). They had the worst pitching staff. No pitcher topped 125 innings, and of the 14 who threw at least 50 innings only three were better than average. Given another year of uncompetitive baseball to audition pitchers, pick up other teams' discarded scraps, be patient with young arms and develop prospects, it's not unrealistic that they will find three decent, reliable starters to build around. At which point they'll just have to hope the 2017 offense wasn't a collective fluke.
The nice thing about being young, having no burden of expectations and not really caring about right now is having about a million different places for success to bloom. None of these three teams has needs so defined or immediate as to be limiting; if three players break out and they're all second basemen, hey, whatever, there's time to figure out the playing time later. Heck,
"success" might be another team's left fielder getting hurt, forcing it to overpay in trade for yours. The Braves could call this season successful with a Dansby Swanson rebound, Brandon McCarthy staying http://www.officialcowboysfootballauthentic.com/COWBOYS-JONATHAN-COOPER-JERSEY healthy until the trade deadline, Ozzie Albies being one of the five Final Vote All-Star selections and half a dozen prospects moving steadily toward maturity. The Padres could call this season successful
with a reassuringly strong Eric Hosmer campaign, one fewer walk per nine from Dinelson Lamet, Brad Hand dominating until the trade deadline and half a dozen prospects moving steadily toward maturity. The White Sox could call this season successful with 80 walks from Yoan Moncada, Antonio Gates Jersey a 94 mph average fastball from Lucas Giolito, James Shields pitching well until the trade deadline and half a dozen prospects moving steadily toward maturity. and they lost the most games. They got older this offseason. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if the http://www.authenticnuggetstore.com/Jamal_Murray_Jersey roster is actually good, and credit the front office for being bold enough to believe that. But it means they almost certainly won't be better in 2019 than they will be in 2018. Which then means that if they miss the playoffs in 2018, it might be a long time before we take the Giants seriously. So the plan depends on them actually being good or having a strong exit strategy if they're not. (To be clear, hitting the second two bullet points might narrowly count as successful, but the first two bullets are the real goal.)
The Mets are similar -- good not long ago, very bad last year, got older this winter, bottom-five farm system -- but with two distinctions that probably cancel each other out: The Mets' major leaguers are on the younger side, so they will still have something to build a future around no matter what happens this year; but the front office hasn't won three rings in the past eight years, so it has a lot less leeway to say "whoopsie."
The Royals -- well, the Royals don't really seem like they should be in this group, do they? The PECOTA projections at Baseball Prospectus see Authentic Malcolm Mitchell Jersey them as the worst team in baseball, or at least tied with the Marlins at 65 wins. But the Royals also don't look like a rebuilding team: They're old, they're around the league-average payroll, their farm system is one of the worst in baseball and their lineup looks like a team that's trying to win now -- just not trying very well. Which is all to say that while they're properly in this group, they're ... not likely to have what we'd call a successful season.
The stakes aren't as high and the recent failures aren't as ominous for the Cardinals as they are for the Giants and Mets. They missed the playoffs last year, and we still concluded it was a successful season, with three surprising breakouts in the lineup, competitive baseball deep into September and 3.4 million fans in the stands. But if they miss the postseason in 2018, it would be for the third year in a row,
the longest drought for St. Louis since the late 1990s. It could happen and they could still claim a productive season -- if a healthy Alex Reyes wins the Rookie of the Year award, if Miles Mikolas is as good in the National League as he was in Japan last season and if Kolten Wong suddenly hits 27 homers. But at this point, the Cardinals are like a hedge fund that consistently outperforms the market. What might Womens Tracy Mcgrady Jersey seem like a good year to a kitchen-table investor wouldn't to them.
To be honest, I'm not sure 90 wins without a playoff spot would do it for the Mariners, who have the longest postseason drought in baseball and haven't played past Game 162 since 2001. Their front office is led by a GM, Jerry Dipoto, who has a fantastic reputation but only one playoff appearance among three seasons in Anaheim and two in Seattle. His handpicked manager, Scott Servais, was hired without any dugout experience (he was Dipoto's assistant GM with the Angels) and hasn't reached October. The Mariners have the worst farm system in baseball by a pretty good margin. If they don't win this year, you might very well start hearing talk of wobbly chairs in that front office.
The Diamondbacks' front office is quite secure, job-wise, after an unexpectedly strong season and postseason appearance last year. Anything less than the playoffs will be moving backward, though, especially because, unlike the Mariners, the Diamondbacks project to be a playoff team right now. Windows don't stay open forever: They have a bad farm system, their second-best position player (A.J. Pollock) will be a free agent next winter and their success has been built on the world's most fragile resource, healthy starting pitchers. Their chances are probably better this year than next.
The Twins, Rockies and Brewers have a lot in common: Jim Brown Womens Jersey All are young, on upward trajectories and coming off more successful seasons than most of us expected last year. All have graduated prospects from previously standout farm systems, and all have at least one young major leaguer (e.g., the Brewers' Orlando Arcia, the Rockies' David Dahl and the Twins' Byron Buxton, among others) who could bloom into an offensive superstar this year.
All spent money or traded prospects to build up their major league rosters this offseason, acting more or less like contenders. None, though, is a sure thing the way the Cubs and Astros were coming out of their rebuilds. The Twins and Rockies could both lose their 2017 WAR leaders (Brian Dozier and Charlie Blackmon) to free agency next winter. The Brewers' WAR leader last year, Jimmy Nelson, just had shoulder surgery.
Which http://www.packersnflofficialonlinestore.com/Kevin-King-Jersey is to say nobody really knows what this year, or this era, will offer any of them. Just look at the Rangers, who were in a similar position last spring and dropped down to 78 wins. These teams' competitive windows are simultaneously just opening and inherently uncertain. None of these teams needs to win the World Series this year to be successful, but each must look like a team that still could.
The Angels have little in http://www.philadelphiaeaglesauthentic.com/Authentic-Reggie-White-Jersey common with the rest of the teams in this group. That said, this seems like a good set of success markers for a club that hasn't won a playoff game this decade but could carry a lot of hope into next season if Shohei Ohtani turns out to be as fun/good as his press clippings have promised.

the next five NL West crowns -- and five more shots at winning it all -- so a failure to win the World Series this year wouldn't be a permanent failure. But until they do win one, the Dodgers represent a staggering investment in unconsummated greatness.
The Dodgers won't have the league's highest payroll this year, but they have been by far the most expensive team of late, outspending the Astros and Cubs combined over the previous half-decade. They have also been baseball's best team, winning more games than any other club, and they've had the best pitcher of the generation starting two games in every postseason series. That's not a bad way to live! But it makes everything short of the ultimate goal a failure, especially because they have the sport's 11th-longest World Series drought, an entire generation's worth of not winning it all.
The stakes are much lower for the Astros and Cubs, who've won the past two titles. Once a team has won a World Series, not much moves the needle for a while. The Astros and Cubs are playing for two things: to build up their dynasty claim, which probably requires three titles in a short time; http://www.officialauthenticsaintsstore.com/Nike-Ryan-Ramczyk-Jersey.html or to stay relevant, which is to say, to avoid disaster, keep a 90-win outlook, keep
their season-ticket sales strong and justify their long rebuilds with long competitive windows. If they don't collapse this season -- see the 2017 Giants, the 2014 Braves, the 2014 Red Sox and the 2012 Phillies for what that would look like -- then no damage done and not what you'd call a failure. But if they don't win the World Series, it'll be standing still and probably not what you'd call a success.
Few storylines in baseball have been as compelling, dynamic and promising for as long as the overlapping Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper storylines. Strasburg was perhaps the most hyped amateur pitching prospect of all time. Harper, from his midteens, was perhaps the most hyped hitting prospect of all time. Then they were teammates! Wow! In the years since, each has been, at times, among the most dominant baseball players in the world. Harper had, in 2015, the best offensive season since Barry Bonds; Strasburg had, in 2017, a 0.70 ERA in the second half, including his two postseason starts.
As a story, this has been perfectly paced and plotted, through obstacles and separations and payoffs withheld, a story both of predictability (the young prodigies grow into mature heroes) and unpredictability (the Nats, with these two historic forces, with the second-best record in baseball over half a decade, have failed to win a single postseason series). One assumes a story like this is moving toward a huge payoff. But Harper (along with Daniel Murphy and Gio Gonzalez) is about to hit free agency. This could be the final act of the Strasburg/Harper story. A World Series victory is the finish you're counting on. An appearance in it is the bare minimum. A "to be continued" -- i.e., Harper signing an extension -- would be tedious but still promising.
The Yankees are the Vegas favorites, but they're young, they're already ahead of schedule, they'll have and be a ton of fun, they'll be able to spend a lot of money next winter and they're probably entering a five-year period during which they'll win 500 games and (more than likely) at least one title. They have a lot of goals this season -- incorporate Gleyber Torres into the mix, keep their pitchers healthy, get along well with new manager Aaron Boone, get either Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton (or both) to 62 home runs and win the World Series Authentic Johnathan Cyprien Jersey -- but as long as they don't move backward it's hard to see this not being an incredibly fun season.
Last year, the Red Sox entered the season as World Series favorites, saw their offense collapse, fired their manager and lost in the ALDS. We still concluded it was a successful season, but barely. This year, they're consensus underdogs in their division, so reaching the same stage -- either by beating the Yankees in the AL East or winning the wild-card game -- would be a worthy enough goal, even if they are spending more than any other team this year. If they can do it without Hanley Ramirez's 2019 option vesting, with Price pitching well enough to opt out of or be worth the rest of his contract, and with Devers or Benintendi getting MVP votes, they'd be in position to go toe-to-toe with the Yankees in 2019.
Cleveland was arguably the best team in baseball last season, Authentic Dustin Tokarski Jersey and it has http://www.carolinahurricanesofficialonline.com/Adidas-Trevor-Van-Riemsdyk-Jersey been the best team in the AL over the past five. It got bounced from http://www.officialpiratesproshop.com/Tony_Watson_Jersey the ALDS in 2017 after blowing a 2-0 lead and now has the longest World Series drought in baseball. So maybe expectations are as high there as they are for the Dodgers or Nationals. But Cleveland is one of the toughest markets to compete in -- only the Rays have drawn fewer fans in
the past half decade -- and the Indians' current run of five good seasons and a few promising ones to come is a huge achievement. The core is almost entirely under team control beyond this season, and the Indians probably won't be pushed too hard by a division rival until 2020. A division title, a strong rookie season from top prospect Mejia and another attendance boost (last year the Indians drew 2 Womens Richard Rodgers Jersey million fans for the first time in a decade) would keep the momentum going and the window wide open. cheap jerseys china cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys free shipping wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys |

If there's a question about Darnold, it's his delivery, which is more of a windup than the other top quarterbacks'. He has a quick release, but NFL coaches are going to want him to shorten that delivery. A windup, or elongated delivery, could matter for two reasons. One is delivery speed. That seems to be a lesser concern here. Darnold Authentic Jourdan Lewis Jersey anticipates Henrik Lundqvist Authentic Jersey well and gets the ball out pretty quick. That said, a windup can expose the ball to pass-rushers -- think of a ball behind your shoulder, where it can be swatted, as opposed to next to your head -- and for a guy who has had turnover issues, that can stick out.
About those turnovers: Darnold had an issue there in 2017 -- his 22 turnovers were tied for most in the FBS -- but I actually think a lot of that was footwork. Several of his 13 interceptions were because of poor footwork, and some of his sacks were the result of his not properly setting his feet and climbing the pocket. Alex Erickson Jersey Scouts will take a close look at Darnold's footwork and mechanics on Wednesday to see if he's moving in the right direction.
Deep outs to the opposite hash. Fades. Corners. Get under center. Show three-, five- and seven-step drops. (If it's raining, even better). Scouts are watching every throw and the footwork that goes into those throws. In a perfect world, no balls would hit the ground against air. Now, Darnold can't help his http://www.panthersshopnfl.com/Authentic-Wes-Horton-Jersey receivers dropping the ball, but ball placement matters. Is he giving his receivers a chance to make a play on every throw?
How does he interact with teammates? Is he screaming at a receiver who drops a pass? Is he respectful to his coaches and to the people in attendance? All that stuff matters to scouts. And they're watching every interaction. The front office that drafts Darnold should have no questions about him when the pro day is over. Pro days are really about confirming what the tape shows. Darnold has some fantastic tape, mixed with rocky moments from 2017.
All of the top quarterbacks in this class have flaws. That's why there's no consensus on who's going No. 1 overall to the Cleveland http://www.authenticangelsshop.com/authentic-47-ricky-nolasco-jersey.html Browns. But Darnold is squarely in the mix. What he does Wednesday should help confirm what we've talked about since he burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2016: He has a chance to be special.
ALBANY, N.Y. -- What started when NFL players sparked a national discussion on racism and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem will continue this week as current and former players meet with lawmakers and community officials in major cities across the Northeast. The campaign began Tuesday in New York's state capitol, where New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis -- representing the Players Coalition -- joined criminal justice reform advocates to lobby legislators to change what they believe are race-based disparities in the bail system.
"We're using our platform and our space to do our part, to raise awareness [on] the social injustices that are going on in our country," said Davis, who signed last week with the Saints after playing for the New York Jets. "In New York, we're focusing on criminal reform. That's just a small piece in a big puzzle."
On Wednesday, former Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson will participate in a town hall-style session in Baltimore that will focus on police and community relations. On Thursday in Washington, D.C., Redskins cornerback Josh Norman will head a group that will visit a local school to discuss education and economic advancement. On Thursday in Boston, New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty and former Pats star linebacker Willie McGinest will meet with key legislators.
One of the topics of discussion will be a bill that would raise the age within the juvenile justice system. The week concludes Friday in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and former NFL wideout Anquan Boldin, among others, will participate in a Harvard University summit that will include panel discussions on criminal justice reform and related issues plaguing communities.
In January, the NFL finalized plans to partner with players on social justice issues, announcing a "Let's Listen Together" initiative that will publicize the players' work on social and racial equality. Team owners earmarked $89 million over a seven-year period for the project. A league official told ESPN's Adam Schefter that team owners will discuss the social justice platform at next week's annual league meetings in Orlando, Florida. The official also told Schefter that no vote on a policy change as it pertains to the national anthem is anticipated. "The league has been instrumental in helping us bring light to our community and the issues that are going on in them," said Davis, who believes player protests will decrease in 2018 because of the league's support.
Davis, joined by members of the Bronx public defenders, spent Tuesday meeting with legislative aides on both sides of the aisle. The veteran linebacker, who granted behind-the-scenes access to ESPN, was articulate and passionate in the meetings. He asked questions and pressed the lawmakers' staff members when they appeared to be dodging specific issues. He challenged them to "move the needle" and enact change in their constituencies.

| add to favorites | “He’s a great guy,” Darnold said of Haslam on the NFL Network | Hardware - Hard disks |
“That whole staff is awesome. I was able to meet with the Giants as well [on Monday]. Just meeting with both of those organizations, like I said before, those people are at the top of the world right now, and I’m trying to impress them but at the same time be myself. So there is a fine line between that, and I just tried to find that and do my best.”
Part of the reason the Browns sent such a large contingent to Los Angeles is because Darnold did not throw at the scouting combine. Darnold, who will turn 21 in June, chose not to go inside when it started raining, in part because he wanted to show that he could handle the elements and because he did not think it was fair to his USC teammates to move the time of the workout. Another factor is that USC’s indoor facility is not large enough for deep passes, ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson said during the workout.
Although there were several dropped passes, Darnold was praised for his accuracy and mobility. He also focused on showing that he has worked on holding onto the ball with two hands (he had 21 fumbles in two seasons at USC). He did not seem to do anything to hurt his draft standing and might even have improved his cause. “Just being aware of all those little things and then just coming out here and ripping it,” Darnold said. “I thought I did a pretty good job.”
Darnold said during an interview with ESPN that he’s eager to go to a team that wants him. He is well aware that the Browns traded for Tyrod Taylor to be the team’s starting quarterback. “It'd be awesome to go No. 1, just because I think what the Browns are doing is really good right now, and I think they have potential to be a really good team in the future," Darnold said. "Just based on that, yeah, a part of me really wants to go 1. But at the same time, if they don't want me and they don't pick me, that's the best situation. Because I don't want to go to a team that doesn't want me." This is a busy time for quarterback pre-draft workouts. Josh Rosen had his workout at UCLA on Tuesday. The Browns will visit and work out Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield on Thursday. On Friday, it’s on to Wyoming, where Josh Allen will http://www.officialauthenticchiefsstore.com/Nike-Christian-Okoye-Jersey.html have his pro day. Allen is also viewed as a possibility for the Browns at No. 1.
The decision proved fruitful, as Darnold looked impressive in making about 60 or so throws in front of a Cleveland Browns contingent that included owner Jimmy Haslam in the stands, with general manager John Dorsey, head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley on the sidelines. "One of my first football experiences was playing mud football in the rain," Darnold said, smiling. "So it was cool to come out here and throw one last time with the guys that I've been throwing with for years now."
The Browns hold the No. 1 overall selection in this year's NFL draft, and Darnold said he met with Cleveland brass and participated in a private workout Tuesday. arnold said he also met with decision-makers from the New York Giants before his workout. The Giants hold the No. 2 overall pick. Giants head coach Pat Shurmur was on hand to watch Darnold's workout, along with New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles, Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn. Darnold said he has a couple visits http://www.cavaliersproshop.com/Tyrone_Hill_Jersey lined up before the draft in April, but he did not disclose the teams.
Darnold said he has been working with personal quarterback coach Jordan Palmer to try to get his hips looser so he can use them more when he throws. Darnold also has spent time with former NFL head coach Bill Parcells to help get prepared for life in the pros.
"I think the main thing with him was just get back in the huddle -- that was the main phrase he kept saying," Darnold said about Parcells. "No matter what the score is on Sunday, no matter what happens on Sunday, Monday or Thursday, just get back in the huddle that next week." Palmer addressed Darnold's quiet, unassuming nature, saying that the quarterback's level-headed approach will be a plus for NFL teams willing to draft the USC product. "Sam is not the kid you speed date; he's the kid you marry," Palmer said. "So as he goes through this process and gets to spend some time with these other teams, it's very predictable for people like myself that are in Tani Tupou Womens Jersey his circle that people will fall in love the more they get to know him."
Yet USC quarterback Sam Darnold's pro day matters -- at least, it does to NFL teams. Sure, pro days are just a sliver of the evaluation process for NFL draft prospects. But they aren't completely useless, and we're talking about a potential No. 1 pick here -- a potential No. 1 pick with competition. It magnifies things a little more. Yes, scouts and front-office personnel have watched mountains of tape, talked to people who know the prospects they have their eyes on and sometimes even met with the prospects, either at the combine or on in-person visits. And quarterbacks? If a team is eyeing a quarterback in Round 1, it has done its homework.
When Darnold chose not to throw at the combine earlier this month, it didn't raise any flags, but it made this pro day matter a little more. He was the only quarterback among the potential first-round picks who didn't throw. Did he not want to compete? Was he tweaking his mechanics?
Darnold has enough tape to show teams. He threw 57 touchdown passes to 22 interceptions and completed 64.9 percent of his passes across 24 starts. There were no red flags in any of his athletic testing at the combine (hand size was a question going in, but he measured right around average for quarterbacks). What did he really have to prove throwing to receivers he has never Jimmy Howard Authentic Jersey met? He has shown enough promise to be in the running to be the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft. And he was always planning to throw at his pro day, which is Wednesday.

| add to favorites | Browns' dream draft: Top QB plus Barkley, Chubb or Fitzpatrick | Hardware - Hard disks |
Imagine this NFL draft for the Cleveland Browns: They select the quarterback they want first overall, then three picks later they select the best player at every other position. It could be defensive lineman Bradley Chubb or running back Saquon Barkley or defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick. Any of the three combined with a quarterback would give the Browns a special first round -- with three more picks awaiting in the second. This draft scenario would be akin to the Browns having two first overall draft picks, one for the quarterback and one for every other position on the field.
Don't discount this possibility. The New York Jets traded up to the No. 3 pick. The Jets will be drafting a quarterback. Authentic Anthony Barr Jersey The Browns are almost obligated to take a quarterback first -- and if they don't they risk missing on the guy they truly want. At this point it would be football malpractice not to take the quarterback the Browns like first overall. If the Giants decide to take a quarterback at No. 2 -- Eli Manning is 37 -- or if they trade the pick to another team that wants a quarterback, the first three picks will be quarterbacks and the Browns would be left with their choice of everyone else.
The three teams that could http://www.ramsfootballofficialonline.com/Authentic-Robert-Woods-Jersey trade up with the Giants are Buffalo, Arizona and Denver. Any of those teams would secure that the first three picks are quarterbacks. That would give the Browns their choice of players, any of whom -- on paper -- should make an immediate impact. The top options:
Chubb has always been an intriguing guy Womens Tony Watson Jersey for the Browns, but with the Colts picking third it was generally thought he would go to Indianapolis. With the Jets now picking No. 3, Chubb could be there at No. 4 -- though it's also possible the Giants choose Chubb as a replacement for Jason Pierre-Paul, who was just traded. All the chatter about Chubb speaks to his ability.
Chubb is a big, fast, aggressive pass-rusher. He has lined up on both sides. In his last two seasons at NC State, he had 21 sacks and 46.5 tackles for a loss. There is nobody close to him as a pass-rusher in the draft.Adding Chubb would be adding to a position of strength. The Browns have Myles Garrett and Emmanuel Ogbah, both of whom are projecting as future Pro Bowlers. But adding Chubb, a guy the Browns like, would give Gregg Williams several pass-rush combinations.
There is also one truth in the NFL: The most important guy on the team is the quarterback and the next most important guys are players who can affect the quarterback. That happens either at corner Latavius Murray Jersey or on the defensive line. Chubb's addition would make the Browns defensive line young and formidable. Saquon Barkley is rated by some as the top talent in this draft and could be available when the Browns make their second pick of the first round at No. 4. Kamil Krzaczynski/USA TODAY Sports
Barkley's addition would give the Browns' offense a weapon it needs, and would give the team a player who many rank as the best in the draft. http://www.officialshopravensjersey.com/Marlon_Humphrey_Jersey_Cheap Barkley has balance, vision and breakaway speed. Two noteworthy stats: Barkley had 54 receptions last season and has the all-time record for touchdowns at Penn State with 43.
At 230 pounds, he ran a 4.40 40-yard dash at the combine, something that isn't supposed to happen. The NFL compared his workouts to previous combines, and found that Barkley's 29 reps on the bench press were one more than Joe Thomas. His 10-yard time was better than receiver DeSean Jackson. His 40 time was better than Devin Hester's.The Browns signed Carlos Hyde in free agency to go with Duke Johnson in the backfield, but that will not keep them from taking Barkley if they feel he is the best option. Hue Jackson and Todd Haley should easily be able to find roles for all three.
Fitzpatrick, the third option, is the only one of the three top players under discussion who would fill an immediate need. The Browns badly lack a shutdown corner, and though Fitzpatrick played safety during his final season at Alabama, he has played corner as well. The Browns like him at either position.Fitzpatrick checks all the boxes. He's talented, aggressive and versatile. Williams could use him all over the field defensively. The Bro owns need someone who can turn the ball over, and Fitzpatrick had nine interceptions at Alabama, four that he returned for a touchdown.
One other option at corner would be Ohio State's Denzel Ward, a guy whose stock seems to improve as time goes on. If the Browns wanted to recoup the third-round pick they traded for Tyrod Taylor, they could move down from No. 4 to later in the first round and take Ward. Draft analysts generally have Fitzpatrick ranked ahead of Ward.
The bottom line: The Browns -- thanks to Sashi Brown dealing for the Texans' first-round pick and then Deshaun Watson's injury hurting the Texans' record -- are in great shape in this draft. They will likely come out of it with the quarterback they choose, and then either Barkley, Chubb or Fitzpatrick. There will be discussion and debate about which of the three is the best option, but there won't be discussion that any of the three would be a significant addition to a team coming off a winless season.
Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam was among those viewing as Sam Darnold was slinging in the rain Wednesday at USC.Haslam was one member of a large contingent present to evaluate the quarterback the Browns are pondering taking with the first overall pick in the NFL draft. In an unusual twist, Darnold chose to keep throwing after heavy rain started a few minutes into his workout. He received generally favorable reviews from analysts for his footwork, arm strength and accuracy.
Browns in attendance for the workout included Haslam, general manager John Dorsey, coach Hue Jackson, offensive coordinator Todd Haley and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese. Haslam sat with Darnold’s parents during part of the workout. On Tuesday night, the Browns took Darnold out to dinner. Haslam was present not to scout Darnold but more to get to know him with the rest of the Browns staff. wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys free shipping wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys from china cheap nfl jerseys |

The first game of the 2013 baseball season was in Houston, hosted by an Astros team that had finished in last place the previous year and was going to finish in last place again. It was nationally televised -- the Astros had just moved from the National League to the American, earning them baseball's showcase time slot -- and in the sixth inning the booth called down to ESPN's Buster Olney for an interview with GM Jeff Luhnow.
"I've heard from some of your peers," Olney said, "that the Astros probably are the purest form of implementation of statistical data. Tell me, in a nutshell, what your philosophy is." "Well, it's pretty simple," Luhnow began ...
What do you think Luhnow said? What, in a nutshell, was the Astros' "pretty simple" philosophy? When, two years later, ESPN's analytics report named the Philadelphia 76ers the most analytical team in any major sport, what do you think made GM Sam Hinkie "the NBA's most ardent analytics master"? After the NFL's Cleveland Browns hired Moneyball superstar Paul DePodesta to be chief strategy officer, how would you define the strategy he has been chief of? What holds these three exemplars of "pure" analytics together?
1. The Astros went 162 -- 324 from 2011 to 2013, the worst three-year stretch by any team since the expansion Mets in the early 1960s.
2. The 76ers went 47 -- 199 during Hinkie's three seasons, the second-worst three-year stretch in NBA history.
3. The Browns are 1 -- 31 since hiring DePodesta, the worst two-year stretch. The common denominator? It's losing a lot -- a lot -- of games, without trying very hard not to.
In 2018, using "data" or "statistics" is so commonplace and obvious that it can hardly be called a strategy anymore. Even teams that do invest more extensively in analytics are likely to find only tiny advantages that dissipate quickly against like-minded GMs' prying eyes. "The old days of getting something for nothing are over," Billy Beane told the New York Daily News in 2003. "There are too many good [GMs] out there now. The art of the deal isn't ripping off the other guy; it's giving up something to get something that makes you better."
Modern teams across all sports do that by playing to win a different game -- not a figuratively different game but literally different games, games that are years away instead of the game right in front of them. "Moneyball" is now synonymous with the willingness to lose games, without shame, for years at a time, to build something far off in the future. This is perhaps fitting, as the first lesson most of us learn about money is how to save up: how to collect interest, how to wait for deals, how to pool money for greater purchasing power -- buying 5 pounds of gum balls at Costco instead of spending a quarter at a time at the machine.
This is how baseball found itself in this strange place this offseason, where roughly a third of the league's teams were totally uninterested in winning games in 2018 -- a place agent Scott Boras described this winter as "destructive to our sport." "We have to get rid of the noncompetitive cancer," Corey Dickerson Authentic Jersey he complained. "We kicked people out of the game when they tried to not win." In the past, that might have been true. But one of the sabermetric movement's greatest legacies is less a tactic or a strategy than a major shift in philosophy: It has reinterpreted what counts, redefined what it means to be successful and http://www.raidersfootballofficialonline.com/Nike-Jared-Cook-Jersey.html dramatically changed baseball. Which means it's changed us too.
The Pirates had been a sturdy, top-tier team for the first quarter of the century. But they hadn't won the NL pennant since 1927 and http://www.hockeyofficialonline.com/T-Shirts/Los_Angeles_Kings.html were coming off their first last-place finish since 1917. Just as Cubs GM Theo Epstein would six decades later, Rickey announced that his plan was to build a winner ... later. "We're pointing toward 1955," he said. "That's when the bells will start ringing and the red wagon comes down the street. That's when Pittsburgh folks will shout, 'By George, this is it.'"
Rickey proceeded to field a team that was beyond despair. The Pirates finished seventh out of eight teams in his first year, then eighth in the next four, averaging 100 losses. In 1952, they went 42 -- 112, at the time the fifth-worst season in modern history, after which their one star -- Ralph Kiner, who led the league in homers -- asked for a raise. "Son," Rickey told him, "we can finish last without you." The next season, he traded Kiner away.
Rickey's last-place Pirates were probably the purest form of implementation of statistical data in baseball. He used a formula for offense that was the most advanced metric in existence. He tripled his scouting staff and persuaded ownership to give him $500,000 to sign dozens of prospects his first year. He expanded the Pirates' farm system by adding new affiliates. He integrated the team. By 1954 he had added 450
players to the organization, according to Andrew O'Toole's book Branch Rickey in Pittsburgh. He carried bonus babies and Rule 5 picks -- who were required to spend full seasons on the roster or be given up -- even when they were Channing Frye Jersey way too young, way too inexperienced and badly overmatched. "I do not believe he can possibly do a major league club any good in 1955," Rickey lamented of one Rule 5 pick, but he gave the outfielder -- Roberto Clemente -- 501 rough plate appearances anyway. The big league club became the first to fly on road trips so players could spend more time sleeping Authentic Kavon Frazier Jersey in hotel beds. Though they've played five more times over the years, not since that 1991 title bout http://www.officialheatauthentic.com/authentic-40-udonis-haslem-jersey.html have the Jayhawks and Blue Devils clashed against each other with more on the line than they will Sunday afternoon in Omaha, where a ticket to San Antonio and a berth in the Final Four will be at stake. "Two great programs, two really big programs," Duke guard Grayson Allen said. "It's going to be an awesome game."
With a shared history between the two sides making it all the more so. All told, Kansas and Duke have met in the NCAA tournament five times prior, including the 1986 (Duke won in Dallas, 71-67) and 1988 (Kansas won in Kansas City, 66-59) Final Fours. But the '91 national championship showdown in Indianapolis remains the seminal moment between the two.
Shortly after his Blue Devils survived Syracuse 69-65 late Friday night, a relieved Mike Krzyzewski was nowhere near http://www.officialsbuccaneersprostore.com/J_R_Sweezy_Jersey_Cheap ready to talk Kansas or what that first national championship meant for him and the Duke program after several close misses. ithout the same star power, a third-year coach by the name of Roy Williams leaned on grit and a senior in Mark Randall, who would become the only first-round draft pick from that blue-collar unit for Josh Anderson Youth jersey Kansas.

Yet behind Graham, who has elevated himself onto the short list for national player of the year in his senior season, Kansas just keeps piling up wins. On Friday, the Jayhawks added victory No. 30 on the season, jumping to a big lead before holding off a late Clemson rally for an 80-76 decision to advance to the Elite Eight.
"I think of all the teams that we've had here," Self said, "this would be the team that everyone would have thought would not be in this game." On the other side, the Blue Devils are right where Montee Ball Jersey their talent suggested they'd be all along. Few Duke teams come close to matching the star power of the early '90s teams, which were headlined by Hill, Hurley and Christian Laettner, all of whom were All-Americans and to this day remain household names in college basketball. The 1990-91 team, which knocked off undefeated powerhouse UNLV before toppling Kansas 72-65 in the national title game, transformed Duke from a great program to a preeminent one. ("After we beat Vegas the game before ... we just knew we were going to win," Hill said.)
Over the next 5 minutes, 21 seconds, Villanova outscored West Virginia 22-6, turning that six-point deficit into a 10-point lead and sparking the Wildcats to a 90-78 victory and a trip to Sunday's Elite Eight game against Texas Tech. Five players scored during the run, with four players making a 3-pointer. Omari Spellman blocked a shot, then went downcourt and had a putback dunk. Spellman hit a 3 a couple possessions later. Brunson got to the free throw line at will and hit a 3-pointer to cap the run. It was a steady avalanche at both ends of the floor to take the spirit out of West Virginia.
The scariest thing about that Villanova run? It wasn't unusual. No team in the country has the ability to completely bury teams in a five-minute stretch like Villanova does, and the Wildcats have done that all season. In the second round, they opened the second half against Alabama on an 18-1 run to essentially end the game within minutes. Against Xavier in February, they went on a 30-9 run spanning two halves to knock off the eventual Big East champions.
"We're a very talented team," forward Eric Paschall said. "Any night, somebody could go off. We have a lot of weapons, and we're very Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie Authentic Jersey unselfish. We sacrifice for each other. We know we can make the right play. It just helps us in the long run." The barrage of 3-pointers gets the attention. Duke has the ability to overpower opponents with its size in the post, but that doesn't happen in the blink of an eye like Villanova's runs seem to happen. Twenty-two points in just over five minutes is nearly impossible to keep up with, even if it's West Virginia's Press Virginia.
Spellman makes the difference because he can make shots from the perimeter. He had 18 points on Friday, including four 3-pointers. His ability to stretch the floor kept Konate from staying at the rim and contesting every shot. "Coach always tells me to catch and shoot," Spellman said. "We were just looking to come out and run offense and score. I was just having a shoot 'em up, battle in the streets mentality. I was just trying to take the right shots and be aggressive."
"You can see it in our bench. When we get three or four stops in a row, our bench is fired up," guard Donte DiVincenzo said. "As a team on the court, we're fired up. If we're kicking the ball ahead and we're making shots, that's the easy part. "We all know that we can make a run defensively. If we make a 3, next possession we get a stop or steal and then a dunk at the other end. That one steal, kick-ahead to a dunk, that gets us going. That sparks us." Paschall said the team gets an extra boost on the defensive end of the floor, and suddenly, the players are looking at each other and know the momentum is turning in the game.

| add to favorites | IT'S A COUPLE of days before the New York Yankees play | Hardware - Hard disks |
their first spring training game, and Justus Sheffield, Leonard Johnson Youth jersey Chance Adams and Dillon Tate are seated in chairs in a semi-circle around CC Sabathia in a corner of the clubhouse at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. As the Yankees' elder statesman, Sabathia gets two lockers in a corner, away from the traffic that includes players, trainers, clubhouse staff, media members, media relations personnel, interpreters and the occasional coach or front-office member. It's certainly no coincidence that the two lockers on the adjacent wall, before you get to the doorway that leads to the dugout and other offices, belong to Sheffield and Adams.
Along with Tate, they are three of the most promising starting pitchers in a deep and talented Yankees farm system. Tate's locker is in another area of the clubhouse, but he, Sheffield and Adams often congregate together in those mornings before on-field workouts or throwing sessions begin, sometimes at Tate's locker and on this day in front of Sabathia's. Sabathia's lesson was simple. "Just be yourself," Tate explained. "Don't get too amped up and overthrow just because you're pitching in front of the manager and big league coaches."
While Sabathia has embraced the role of mentor, he also had three willing students. The three young starters all come across as baseball rats. Tate described himself as a visual learner and likes watching some of his favorite pitchers on the MLB app -- Chris Archer, Marcus Stroman, Justin Verlander -- to see how they set up batters and use pitch http://www.sharksofficialauthenticshop.com/Timo_Meier_Jersey_Adidas sequencing. Adams likes to mimic the deliveries of other pitchers and apparently does a spot-on imitation of David Price. Sheffield's eyes lit up when he explained how he was working on a backdoor slider to go with his more conventional power slider that dives to the back foot of right-handed batters. It's not about changing his grip, but making a subtle change in the landing spot of his front foot.
Tim Naehring is general manager Brian Cashman's right-hand man, the team's VP of baseball operations. He assists Cashman in evaluating players throughout the minor league system, roster management and trade discussions. I asked him if my assessment of these three was accurate. "We call it the 'it' factor," Naehring said, praising the baseball acumen of all three. He used third baseman Miguel Andujar as another example. "He always has a smile on his face. Tremendous sense of urgency. Wants to get better every day. Those guys that have that desire to be the best that their tools will allow for are the ones who usually get to the majors and stay there."
Sheffield is the highest-rated prospect of the pitchers -- Keith Law ranked him No. 16 overall in his top 100 list -- but Adams might have the best chance to make an impact in 2018. After breezing through six starts in Double-A last season, he made 21 starts at Triple-A and posted a 2.89 ERA. He's a good example of what has transformed the Yankees' system into one of the deepest in the game: a combination of scouting, analytics and player development.
Adams was a reliever his junior season at Dallas Baptist and the Yankees took him in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. "You had certain scouting guys say he looks more like a bullpen piece, then you had [minor league pitching coordinator] Danny Borrell running him through Archie Manning Jersey a bio-mechanic test saying this guy does everything you want to Danny Amendola Authentic Jersey see out of a starter," Naehring said.
So the Yankees made him a starter. Adams is built more like a reliever -- he's listed at 6 feet, which might be generous -- but he's solidly built and has a starter's repertoire, throwing 92-97 mph with a good slider and a developing changeup that Naehring says he thinks has a chance to be a plus offering. He also has some deception in his delivery with a short-arm approach that hides the ball and maybe allows the stuff to play up. The Yankees also like his fastball.
"A hitter thinks about the ball coming out of the hand at a certain angle to the plate," Naehring said. "The way he delivers his fastball and the way the ball holds plane is an abnormal look for the hitter. The brain expects the ball to http://www.authenticramsofficialshop.com/Nike-Jamon-Brown-Jersey.html move in a conventional way and his doesn't do that. So he has attributes with his fastball that we all like." Adams is back in minor league camp (he's not even on the 40-man roster yet), but if there's an injury in the rotation, he could be one of the first options to fill a hole. Sheffield reached Double-A last year and also could be in the Scranton rotation, one step away from the majors. I pointed out to him that he'd have a better shot at the majors right now if he were in another organization, like the Marlins.
IN 2017, THANKS to the emergence of Aaron Judge, Luis Severino, Gary Sanchez and Jordan Montgomery, the Yankees produced 25.7 homegrown WAR on their big league roster -- the second-highest total in the majors behind the Astros, according to data from thebaseballgauge.com. Homegrown talent accounted for 44.1 percent of the Yankees' total WAR, their highest percentage since 2007.
The Yankees not only just graduated all this high-level talent, but they have Law's No. 2-ranked farm system, headlined by Gleyber Torres (his No. 5 overall prospect), Sheffield (16) and Andujar (54). To see how much the system has improved, check out this chart that lists homegrown WAR, original WAR (all talent originally signed or drafted by the Yankees, although not necessarily still with the club) and then where Baseball America ranked the Yankees' system at the start of each season.

| add to favorites | Which team is the most improved after the first wave of free agency? | Hardware - Hard disks |
Graziano: New York Jets. They landed the biggest prize on the free-agent cornerback market in Trumaine Johnson. They added Avery Williamson as a leader for the linebacker corps. They added Isaiah Crowell to their running back group. All upgrades. Now, to the matter of quarterback: Josh McCown isn't an improvement because he was already there. But the Jets' overall plan at the position is improved, as Teddy Bridgewater has more upside than anyone else the Jets had on last year's roster, and trading up to the No. 3 pick in the draft means they're likely to add someone else who does, as well.
Joyner: Houston Texans. The Texans ranked 29th in my blocking grades last season. They aimed to help solve this by signing three offensive linemen, the most valuable of which could be the highly versatile Senio Kelemete. They also added Tyrann Mathieu, who can play slot, outside cornerback or either safety http://www.seahawksofficialfootballonline.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_MARSHAWN_LYNCH_JERSEY.html position or even fill in as a speedy box linebacker.
Sando: Cleveland Browns. They had lots of room for improvement and should realize upgrades from multiple newcomers, especially at QB, which offsets Joe Thomas' Adrian Gonzalez Jersey retirement. However, NFL rosters are a little worse on the whole because so many depth players remain unsigned (free agents Penny Hardaway Youth jersey who have been added were signed at premium prices).
Schatz: San Francisco 49ers. Richard Sherman should still be one of the top cornerbacks in the league if he's fully healed from his Achilles injury, and is a big improvement for a pass defense that was 28th in DVOA last season. Weston Richburg is a nice improvement in the middle of the offensive line, although I might have kept Daniel Kilgore around at guard instead of dealing him away afterward. Jerick McKinnon's flexibility and ability to catch passes will help him play a role similar to the running backs Kyle Shanahan had when he was in Atlanta.
Yates: Chicago Bears. It was sometimes painful to watch the Bears' offense last season without any weapons and perpetually struggling. Adding Allen Robinson on a three-year contract along with the signing of versatile and talented tight end Trey Burton should bring a smile to the faces of new coach Matt Nagy and second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Whether it comes to fruition on the field or not, William Gay Jersey expect an offseason worth of parallels drawn between Nagy's relationship with Trubisky and Rams coach Sean McVay's relationship with quarterback Jared Goff.
Graziano: Patriots at left tackle. Look, you trust New England figures these things out, and we're not about to pick any of the other three teams to win the AFC East. But honestly, who's playing left tackle in New England with Nate Solder off to the Giants? Tom Brady will turn 41 before the season starts, and as brilliantly age-defying as he is, they still need to make sure he's protected.
Joyner: Bills at quarterback. The only QBs on the roster are AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman, both of whom have third-string quarterback written all over them. Without a huge upgrade here, Buffalo's playoff streak will end at one season.
Sando: Bills at quarterback. Moving http://www.bengalsfootballprostore.com/TYLER-BOYD-JERSEY-CHEAP.html up in the draft for a QB seems like a near necessity. Schatz: Bills at quarterback. Whomever Buffalo chooses in the first round of the draft instantly becomes the best quarterback on the roster. Honestly, if http://www.calgaryflamesofficialonline.com/Adidas-Rasmus-Andersson-Jersey the Bills take a player at a different position, that player might still be the best quarterback on the roster.
Yates: Colts at cornerback. This wasn't an area of major strength for Indianapolis in 2017, as veteran Vontae Davis was cut late in the year after a season-ending injury, and the team relied mostly on a youth movement. Rashaan Melvin parlayed his surprising season into a $6.5 million deal from Oakland, leaving Indy with even more question Nat Moore Youth jersey marks at the position. After the Colts traded back to pick sixth overall in the upcoming draft, I'd expect many forecasters to peg Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward as their top selection (if he's still available).
LOS ANGELES -- Prosecutors will not bring criminal charges against Buffalo Bills receiver Zay Jones, who appeared in a video naked while arguing with his brother in Los Angeles earlier this week. Los Angeles prosecutors declined the case because of "insufficient evidence," district attorney's office spokesman Paul Eakins told The Associated Press http://www.authenticbluesstore.com/vince-dunn-jersey_c-439.html on Thursday.
Jones, 22, was arrested after officers were called to a disturbance in downtown Los Angeles, said police spokesman Luis Garcia. Jones was found "breaking glass doors and windows" and arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, Garcia said. The arrest was first reported by TMZ, which posted a video showing a nude Jones pushing his brother, Cayleb, in what appeared to be the hallway of an apartment building. The video also showed what appeared to be blood on the floor and walls of the hallway.
Jones' agent, Zeke Sandhu, did not reply to text and voicemail messages. Sandhu also represents Cayleb Jones.Cayleb Jones, a Minnesota Vikings receiver, on Wednesday posted a note on his Twitter account, which read: "I am my brothers keeper." Their father, former NFL linebacker Robert Jones, posted a note on his Twitter account on Wednesday saying that Zay "is with me and his mom," while adding "he's going to be fine!"

| add to favorites | What has been the biggest head-scratching move? | Hardware - Hard disks |
Dan Graziano, national NFL writer: Allen Robinson, WR, Chicago Bears. A lot of what the Bears did seemed to fall into the "egregious overspend" basket. They guaranteed two years to kicker Cody Parkey, for goodness' sake. But the big one for them was Robinson, who is getting $15 million fully guaranteed this year and $3 million more fully guaranteed in 2019 after a season in which he tore his ACL in Week 1. Robinson was a very good player for Jacksonville three years ago, and it's possible the receiver market pushed his price this high, but it's an Curtis Samuel Jersey eye-popper either way.
KC Joyner, NFL writer: Sheldon Richardson, DT, http://www.officialcardinalsfootballauthentic.com/Evan-Boehm-Jersey.html Minnesota Vikings. Over the past two seasons, Richardson ranked 139th among defensive linemen in ESPN Stats & Information's disrupted dropback percentage metric. Rewarding this caliber of production with a one-year, $8 million deal is the definition of head-scratching.
Mike Sando, senior NFL writer: Weston Richburg, C, San Francisco 49ers. Nothing against Richburg, who could be a good addition. The move was a head-scratcher because it forced out Daniel Kilgore, whom the team signed to an extension last month, holding him up to the rest of the locker room as a leader and building-block player.
Aaron Schatz, Julius Erving Womens Jersey editor-in-chief of Football Outsiders: Danny Amendola, WR, Miami Dolphins. How do you give $12 million over two years to your fourth wide receiver? Do you know how often a team actually gets real usage out of four receivers? Last year, only two teams had more than 30 receptions from four different wide receivers (Oakland and Tampa Bay), and only four other teams had more than 21 receptions from four different wide receivers. The signing will http://www.authenticbluejacketsstore.com/-23-david-clarkson-jersey_c-439.html look better if one of the other wide receivers suffers a serious injury, but in general, WR4 is a position you fill with a mid-round draft pick.
Field Yates, NFL Insider: Miami's composite offseason. Where, exactly, are the Dolphins heading? The team seems to devise a blueprint before abruptly scratching said blueprint within a few years. While the value of culture cannot be overlooked within an NFL team, it's hard to say what the Dolphins are angling toward. True blue-chip talent departed this offseason in Ndamukong Suh (cut), Mike Pouncey (cut) and Jarvis Landry (traded), and while Miami spent aggressively at some spots (such as wide receiver), the team doesn't strike me as improved at this point.
Graziano: The Colts' trade with the Jets for three extra picks to http://www.officialpiratestore.com/authentic-39-dave-parker-jersey.html move down in the draft. Disclaimer: I don't tend to like free-agent signings very much. They leave me cold. For instance, Nate Solder was a signing that will help the Giants, but the cost was insane. Trumaine Johnson improves the Jets, but they spent so much. Same is true for Kirk Cousins, Jerick McKinnon or basically any of the Bears' moves. So let's tip the cap here to the Colts, who badly need to reconstruct their roster depth and just added three second-round picks (two this year, one next) by moving down only three spots at the top of the first round. Nice to have the third overall pick and not need a quarterback.
Joyner: The Vikings signing Kirk Cousins. Famed Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi once said there is no price that is too high to pay for a franchise quarterback, so forget the big price tag for Cousins. Only Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Matt Ryan have posted a higher total for yards per attempt on vertical passes (aerials thrown 11 or more yards downfield) than Cousins over the past two years. This downfield prowess could be the push Minnesota needs to get back to the Super Bowl.
Sando: The Saints re-signing Drew Brees. With much of the focus on Cousins commanding a guaranteed contract, New Orleans retained a future Hall of Fame QB under team-friendly terms, freeing up resources to address other areas. Schatz: The Colts' trade with the Jets. The Jets overpaid even on the traditional draft value chart, and they massively overpaid according to any modern analytical draft value chart. And given the need for quarterbacks at the top of the draft, that No. 6 pick will still turn into Bradley Chubb, Saquon Barkley or Quenton Nelson -- the same players the Colts would have been choosing among at No. 3.
Yates: The Rams trading for Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. In a time when cornerbacks are coveted and paid substantially Damian Jones Jersey on the open market, Los Angeles acquired a pair of potential Pro Bowlers for modest draft-pick compensation commensurate with their on-field abilities. While each has had some combustible moments on the field, the talent is undeniable and the Rams are confident such behavior won't repeat itself in L.A.
PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic -- Tony Romo fell apart on the back nine and made his PGA Tour debut with a 5-over 77 in the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback shot even par on the front nine before a bad stretch of three bogeys and a double-bogey toward the end of his round. He was Reggie Miller Womens Jersey 14 shots behind Brice Garnett, the early leader, who opened with a 63.
Romo started his round off with back-to-back bogeys on the first two holes but then made birdies on Nos. 4 and 5. He answered a bogey at No. 7 with a birdie on No. 8 and finished the front nine at even par. To start his back nine, Romo made a putt of at least 25 feet to make par but had difficulties on holes Nos. 13-16. Romo missed the fairway on four straight tee shots, taking -- but not needing -- two provisional shots on Nos. 15 and 16 only to find his original shot. He parred his final two holes, coming up short on birdie attempts both times. wholesale nfl jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys wholesale jerseys from china cheap jerseys china |
