The 2017 World Series was graced by a left-hander who ranks among the greatest pitchers of all time, a right-hander who is likely to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and another left-hander who recently won a Cy Young Award. But despite those résumés and the past successes of others, the starting pitchers accounted for just 65⅔ innings pitched over the seven games.
That’s an average of fewer than five innings per start. No starter threw a pitch beyond the seventh inning. That’s where we are now, with analytics so embedded in the decision-making that managers are strongly discouraged from allowing some pitchers from even trying to get through an opposing lineup for a third time. The safer bet, statistically, is on the growing army of relievers who are assuming a greater share of innings -- and, as we’ve seen this winter, getting paid more for their work.
The ace pitchers who once lorded over the art of pitching aren’t nearing extinction yet, but there are fewer than ever before, adding even more value to those trusted to face the enemy lineup a third or even a fourth time. Within that context, we start our top-10 series with this: the top 10 starting pitchers in major league baseball, based on input from evaluators and ESPN researchers Paul Hembekides and Sarah Langs.
For example, 1905 was the year Christy Mathewson threw three shutouts in the World Series, and 1959 was the year Harvey Haddix took a perfect game into the 13th inning, and 1982 was the year Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases, and 1967 was the year Carl Yastrzemski won the last Triple Crown Jeff Skinner Youth jersey of the century. It sure does help when the number is a record, which necessitates us constantly bringing
it up whenever somebody remotely challenges them. If somebody throws three no-hitters in Cory Littleton Jersey a row next year, you'll subsequently hear Johnny Vander Meer's name about 95 percent less often than you do now. But some numbers persist despite not being records -- Roger Maris' 1961 chase and Hank Aaron's 1974 jog around the bases will be remembered for many decades after "61" and "755" quit being records -- and some performances are memorable without a specific number, such as Sandy Koufax's breakout in 1963.
1b. Incredible team (often captured by a nickname)
Because we like to argue about which team was the best team ever, and we like to show off by proving we can name decades-old lineups. So 1927 and 1928 were the years of Murderers' Row, 1975 was the year the Big Red Machine peaked, 1996 was the year the Core Four came together and launched a new Yankees dynasty, 1969 was the year of the Miracle Mets.
1c. Incredible single play, or sequence of plays, often aided by iconic photo or video images
These are the single moments when a player was so good, so impactful or so loud it overwhelms the rest of the season. Of course, 1954 was the year not of the 111-43 Cleveland Indians -- the best record in AL history -- but of The Catch. And 1951 was the year of Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard 'Round The World, not Willie Mays' debut. And 1988 was most memorably the year of Kirk Gibson's home run, not Orel Hershiser's 59-inning scoreless streak. Baseball is a game of slowly building records, of naps on the couch and dull Augusts, but the very, very biggest moments can stand out like an air horn in a library.
2. The moment the timeline begins
History is a long drive, and as with all long drives we remember the first and last miles more than the hours of unchanging landscapes in the middle. On the merits, the first World Series -- in 1903 -- wasn't that memorable, Authentic Mark Herzlich Jersey and in many ways, the play would have been unrecognizable to a modern fan: One team's ace was ineffective after injuring himself in a trap-shooting contest, another pitcher threw five complete games, and the best player on the field (Honus Wagner) made six errors. And yet nobody would dispute that the 2017 Series and the 1903 Series belong to the same lineage, which makes 1903 the infrastructure upon which our modern game is built.
And so 1922 is the year baseball got its antitrust exemption, and 1929 is the year Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig first got uniform numbers, and 1935 is when night baseball began, and 1946 is when Jackie Robinson desegregated the minors, and 1950 is when Vin Scully started broadcasting games -- unless that one belongs under category 2b ...We can debate what's modern, but there are various points where the weird old-timey baseball they used to play became the cool and normal baseball we all love now. Which is why 1952 is the year Topps launched the modern baseball card, why 1965 is the year of the draft, and why 1976 is the year of free agency. This is probably the category for 2002's Moneyball A's -- a great team, but more historically memorable as the first modern team.
3. Bloopers and/or extraordinary failures
I don't know that most people know what Snodgrass' Muff (1912) and Merkle's Boner (1908) actually were, but they're probably the http://www.ramsofficialsonline.com/Robert_Woods_Jersey_Cheap two most famous plays of the first quarter of the 20th http://www.authenticmapleleafsshops.com/authentic-17-wendel-clark-jersey.html century. Failure has a better set of vocabulary than success does, for one thing, but it's probably also the case that failure can fail a lot more dramatically than success can succeed. You actively hope for the walk-off homer, but you're not even considering the walk-off slow grounder through the first baseman's legs. So the 1986 season is the year of Bill Buckner, and the 2003 season is the year of Bartman and Grady Little, far more (in my opinion) than 2004 and 2016 will ultimately be remembered as the years of the Red Sox and Cubs winning.
4. Pathos
Sometimes overlapping with reason No. 3 -- Muffs and Boners are undeniably stories of pathos -- but mostly its own thing. The pathos events are the years when happy, playful baseball must grapple with the fact that it exists in a larger world of death, injury and human failing: 1939, the year Lou Gehrig retired; 1957, the year Herb Score got hit by the line drive; 1919, the year of the Black Sox.
5. Disruption of baseball's basic equilibrium
In 1944, Joe Nuxhall pitched in the majors when he was 15. Of course, he pitched in the majors not because he was the most incredible pitching prospect in history, but because all the good players had to go fight in the war, and so for two seasons baseball was basically profoundly weird. This happens sometimes, for reasons less dramatic than wars: The 1968 season was the year of the pitcher, the 1993 season was when the offensive environment of the steroids era really began (along with baseball in Colorado), and the 1987 season was a very brief juiced-ball moment. These are seasons we remember mostly as years when baseball broke, and when everything that happened has to be taken with a little bit of skepticism; you might even think of them as the year the stats don't count. You might actually put 1998 here, the year Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa homered so many danged times. | add to favorites | Isaiah Thomas shows All-Star flashes in long-awaited Cavs debut | Hardware - Hard disks |
CLEVELAND -- Isaiah Thomas walked toward his locker before the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Portland Trail Blazers 127-110 on Tuesday, and before he could slip on his jersey ahead of his first game in more than seven months, his teammates caused a commotion to mark the moment. "I feel like a damn rookie," Thomas muttered under his breath as he sat down in front of his wine and gold No. 3 uniform. He didn't play like a rookie, however, as he scored 17 points and played 19 minutes in his long-awaited Cleveland debut.
"It was a special night for me," Thomas said afterward. "I haven't played in Nelson Cruz Jersey seven months, so to be able to be out there and compete against another team was special. Obviously to get the win was even bigger but just to be able to compete and be out there in a game setting, it was a great feeling for myself." Thomas checked in to a standing ovation with 4:33 left in the first quarter -- his first official action since Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals when he played for the Boston Celtics and faced the Cavs as an opponent on May 19 -- and picked up an assist on his first trip down the floor, passing to his old Boston teammate, Jae Crowder.
"It was a special moment," Thomas said of the reception. "I haven't played in a game, and you would think I was here for a few years and playing and battling in Finals with this team, but it was special for my family to be here, my wife and kids to see that, that's genuine love right there and I appreciate them patiently waiting and giving me the love they did tonight." Thomas took a spill on his second possession after crossing up Damian Lillard, but got back up with no damage other than a grimace on his face. He attempted his first shot the next time he touched the ball, rimming a 3-pointer in and out.
avs coach Tyronn Lue said he was hoping Thomas would experience a hard fall like that. "Once he hits the floor, gets banged and sees he has no damage or he's not hurting, I think that will help him get past the mental block of coming back, being out for seven months," Lue said before the game Thomas missed his next shot, a corner 3, but got his third shot to go -- a pull-up 14-foot jumper with 1:11 left in the first quarter.
He didn't stop there, scoring an and-1 layup on the http://www.authenticnikefalconshop.com/matt-ryan-jersey-for-sale-c-8.html next possession as he exploded past Portland guard Shabazz Napier. Thomas closed the first quarter by air-balling a 3; however, he made his first shot of the second quarter on a pull-up 3. When Thomas checked back in later in the second quarter, he immediately found LeBron James, who was posting up, for a feed down low, resulting in a bucket and showing a glimpse of what James could accomplish working more off the ball because of Thomas.
James offered a glowing report about his new teammate. "He's very good, very good," James said. "Very dynamic. Can shoot the pill. Can get in the lane. Can pass the ball. He's going to just create so much for our team." James also credited Thomas' mentality.
"What I like most about him is he has a chip on his shoulder for life," he said. "That's just who he is. When a guy's got a chip on his shoulder for life, he ain't going to -- he's never going to not http://www.authenticbruinsstore.com/cam-neely-jersey_c-426.html work hard. Not going to never give it his all. Not going to never disappoint you. Now basketball, you miss shots and things of that nature, and we're not worried about that. You make turnovers, all of that, that's not what I'm saying, but a guy like that -- he's going to always put in the work. And when you put in the work the game is going to always give back to you."
Making sure his night included a little of everything, Thomas was also whistled for a technical foul for arguing a non-call with a referee in the Authentic Peter Budaj Jersey first half. It was Womens Rasul Douglas Jersey actually his second technical foul of the season -- he picked one up while wearing street Rico Gathers Youth jersey clothes when the Cavs played the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden in November. Thomas didn't check back in until late in the third quarter, and his first shot hit the underside of the rim. But on the next possession, he found himself open in the corner and hit a 3-pointer to extend the Cavs' streak of hitting 10 3s or more as a team to a franchise-record 26th straight game.
Lue said that when he devised a game plan to stop Thomas as an opponent, his top priority was keeping Thomas off the foul line. The Blazers fell victim to Thomas' foul-drawing ways, as he used a pump fake to get fouled on a 3-point attempt later in the third quarter and earned three freebies. By the fourth quarter, Thomas seemed to find the rhythm that he claimed was eluding him in the three scrimmages he played in the weeks leading up to his debut. He hit a pull-up 3-point jumper in transition to push the Cavs' lead from six to nine at 100-91. Thomas checked out for good with 8:10 left in the fourth and the Cavs up 102-91. Lue dapped him up on the sideline before Thomas headed to his seat on the bench.
His 17 points came on 6-for-12 shooting (3-for-8 from 3), and he had three assists."I know it's going to take time at first and we got to go through the steps of going out there and playing in the game and figuring those things out, but once I get comfortable, then all the restrictions got to be off soon," Thomas said before Tuesday's game.
Thomas was asked pregame to compare how his body feels now compared to before he suffered his hip injury in March and aggravated it during the playoffs. "I mean, my hip is better, but I have no rhythm," he said. "I have no feel for the game right now. I've been out for so long it feels like I lost my powers. So even when we're out there scrimmaging, I can move around and do what I want, but I just don't have my powers yet." The prospect of playing against Kyrie Irving on the TD Garden parquet is something that gets Thomas' energy up; he couldn't help but break into a wide smile Friday when a reporter mentioned the upcoming Celtics game. However, he'll have to wait until the Cavs' game in Boston on Feb. 11.
"That minutes restriction don't make it hard at all," Thomas said when asked about sitting out Wednesday. "It would be hard to play in Boston with a minutes restriction. Whatever they say, I http://www.official76erstore.com/Markelle_Fultz_Jersey can't play in back-to-backs for however long. I've got to follow their rules and continue to get better each and every day." Thomas claims he can play 40 minutes right now, despite the Cavs holding him to about half that total on Tuesday.

| add to favorites | The Cincinnati Bengals and Marvin Lewis just can't quit each other | Hardware - Hard disks |
The team announced Tuesday that Lewis will return next season, signing him to a two-year contract that runs through the 2019 season. This comes after two days of discussions between Lewis and team owner Mike Brown that were all about “getting on the same page.” The Bengals are going to bring back Lewis, but his return needs to come with major changes. It has become clear the Bengals' fan base has grown weary of seeing the same results year after year. That was evident during the last few http://www.officialredsoxauthentic.com/Andrew_Benintendi_Jersey home games of the season, when the team was playing in front of an increasingly sparse crowd.
Some fans on social media have threatened to stop going to the games at all if Lewis returns. The Bengals want to sell tickets as much as any other team. There's no way the front office is blind to what has happened with the fans in the past year.
The team's lack of playoff wins now stretches all the way back to the 1990 season. Although Lewis has done plenty of good for the team during his tenure, in the end, his legacy will be defined by the postseason wins. He’s currently 0-7, which is the worst playoff record in NFL history for a coach with at least five postseason games. That has to change, and the team needs to help him get there. Major changes are the only way the team is going to able to sell another two years of Lewis to a disenchanted fan base, and it's likely in those discussions with Brown that Lewis was asking for the same thing.
The lack of indoor practice facility, while frustrating for the coaching staff because the team has to waste time sitting on a bus traveling to the University of Cincinnati, is probably not the sticking point. The Bengals are the northernmost NFL team without an indoor facility, but even if the decision were made this week to get one, it likely wouldn't be built in time to Lanny McDonald Authentic Jersey do much good for next season.
Lewis is likely seeking more control over personnel, much like he was the last time he and Brown went into these discussions after the 2010 season. Although Brown appeared to cede more control at the time, the Bengals still have one of the smallest scouting staffs in the league, rarely sign free agents or make big trades and seem reluctant to part with assistants or players who have money left on their contract.
The firing of offensive coordinator Ken Zampese two weeks into the season was an anomaly for a team that thrives on continuity. That needs to change. With the contracts of many of the Bengals' assistants up, now is the perfect time for the team to make changes to the coaching staff. And the first order of business should be getting the offense back on track.
If the Bengals want to sell this to the fans, they need to start in the offseason. They need to do everything possible to fix the offensive line, whether that means moving http://www.officialfloridapanthers.com/Adidas-Aleksander-Barkov-Jersey on from longtime assistant Paul Alexander, signing a quality free agent or taking a lineman in the first Womens Todd Gurley Jersey round of the draft. They need to hire an offensive coach who can get quarterback Andy Dalton back to the form he showed in 2015 with Hue Jackson. Free agency should be a priority, not a last resort. The Bengals need to show that they're serious about being a team that can win games in the postseason, not simply a team that's content to get there. And to win back their fan base, they need to start those changes now.
The obvious choice is Brady, who is a strong candidate for NFL MVP honors, and one can never go wrong with that. While his performance dipped over the last few weeks, he still finished the season with a league-high 4,577 passing yards. With Brady always in the lead position, it's always good to add the "non-Brady-MVP" category, and that would be a toss-up between Lewis and Rob Gronkowski. Since taking over lead-back duties on Oct. 15 against the Jets, Lewis has been the team's most consistent, dynamic, dual-threat playmaker as he finished the season with 180 rushes for 896 yards and six touchdowns, with 32 catches for 214 yards and three touchdowns. -- Mike Reiss
Suggs led the Ravens with 11 sacks and four forced fumbles. Baltimore was 6-1 in games in which Suggs recorded a full sack. A fourth-quarter strip sack sealed a 23-16 win over the Texans in late November. He ranks as the franchise's all-time leader in sacks (125.5) and forced fumbles (36). -- Jamison Hensley
The Steelers have legit candidates in Antonio Brown, Le'Veon Bell and Cam Heyward. But Roethlisberger gets the slight nod for his electric late-season surge. No QB finished hotter than Big Ben, who threw for 1,953 yards and 16 touchdowns from Weeks 11 to 16. He ranked second in passing yards before sitting the season finale against Cleveland, and his 28 touchdowns ties for fifth
league-wide. Take out that five-interception game against Jacksonville -- which was clearly an aberration -- and Roethlisberger's season line of 14 interceptions doesn't look so bad. Brown was brilliant all year, but so was Roethlisberger, who was near-perfect in the Steelers' game against New England without Brown. -- Jeremy Fowler NHL Hockey Jerseys Baseball Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Paypal Wholesale Jerseys All |

Arrowhead Stadium. If they win that, they will find themselves in either Pittsburgh or New England for the divisional round, depending on what happens in the Jaguars/Bills game. If Jacksonville wins, the Jags go to Pittsburgh and the Chiefs go to New England. If the Jags lose, the Chiefs -- as the highest-seeded wild-card-round winner -- would play the 2-seed Steelers in Pittsburgh in the divisional round. If they win their divisional round game, the Chiefs would play the Patriots, Steelers, Jaguars or Bills Trevor Rosenthal Jersey in the AFC Championship Game. The only way that game would be in Kansas City is if the opponent is the Bills.
Reason for hope: This team has been to the playoffs before -- just last year, in fact. And while that experience was a Bud Norris Womens Jersey disappointing home loss to a Steelers team that didn't score a touchdown, sometimes negative experiences help teams grow. This Kansas City team has beaten the Patriots, Eagles and Chargers (twice), and their loss to the Steelers was a close one. They shook off their 1-6 midseason slump with three straight wins to claim their second straight division title, and they come in playing well.
Reason for concern: That 1-6 midseason slump did happen, and it put on tape for a lot of teams a blueprint for limiting the Kansas City offense. If the Chiefs' run blocking has a bad day, it makes them one-dimensional and allows teams to beat them with relatively simple Cover 2 shell concepts. Oh, and on defense they struggle against the run.
X factor: Justin Houston. The Chiefs' best pass-rusher hasn't been fully healthy for the playoffs the past two years. When he is, he's still a difference-maker on defense, where Kansas City needs to be better than it has been for much of this season. A healthy Houston could give the Chiefs an edge they haven't had in recent January matchups with the likes of Pittsburgh and New England.
Path to Super Bowl LII: The Titans travel to Kansas City to play the Chiefs in the first round. If they win Brent Burns Jersey that, they would travel to either New England or Pittsburgh for the divisional round. (New England if the Bills beat the Jaguars, Pittsburgh if the Jags beat the Bills). Win that, and the Titans would find themselves in an AFC Championship Game against either the Patriots, Steelers, Jaguars or Bills. The only way it would be a home game is if the opponent were the Bills.
Reason for hope: Uhhh ... they beat the Jaguars twice, which helps give them confidence they can beat the Jaguars. And hey, if DeMarco Murray can get back healthy, they have a 1-2 running back punch that can theoretically help them control games and maybe win ugly.
Reason for concern: They'd lost three games in a row before Sunday's playoff-clinching victory over the Jags, and they really haven't looked good in awhile. Marcus Mariota had 12 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions heading into Sunday's regular-season finale. The Titans have not been able to get the passing game going at all. Talk about coach Mike Mularkey's job security can't be helping matters. X factor: Mariota. The dazzling young quarterback out of Oregon entered this season seemingly poised to make a big leap, and he did not. But the playoffs offer a fresh slate, and Mariota does bring a unique skill set with his ability to run as well as pass. If he gets on a roll, he could make a little magic.
Path to Super Bowl LII: The Bills' first playoff game in a generation will be a road game in Jacksonville. Win that, and they would head to New England to play the Patriots, against whom they went http://www.officialrayshop.com/Corey_Dickerson_Jersey 0-2 this season. But if they shocked the world and won that, the Bills would play an http://www.patriotsshopfootballonline.com/45-donald-trump-super-bowl-jersey.html AFC Championship Game in either Pittsburgh, Kansas City or Tennessee. As the 6-seed, the Bills cannot host a playoff game.
Reason for hope: If he's healthy, running back LeSean McCoy gives Buffalo a true top-of-the-league difference-maker in the running game and the passing game. The Bills have a solid offensive line, and if they can control games, they might have enough playmakers on offense to surprise a team or two.
Reason for concern: McCoy was carted off Sunday with an ankle injury, and without him the Bills wouldn't be the same http://www.authenticbuccaneersofficial.com/Nike-Ryan-Fitzpatrick-Jersey.html team. But even with him, obviously very few of them have been here before. And while quarterback Tyrod Taylor might be the darling of the QBR/advanced stat circuit, one of his failings has been http://www.montrealcanadiensofficialonline.com/Adidas-Tomas-Plekanec-Jersey an inability to elevate his game and make the big-time plays that are required of quarterbacks in playoff games.
X factor: Kelvin Benjamin. Acquired from Carolina in a surprising deadline trade, Benjamin was to give the Bills the No. 1 receiver their offense lacked. He has struggled with a knee injury, however, and might not be fully healthy until he gets that thing fixed in the offseason. But he was their go-for-it move, and if he can play like a No. 1 wide receiver in the playoffs, Womens Tyron Smith Jersey he could make a difference. be at home against either the Bills, Chiefs or Titans. If the Bills beat the Jaguars in the wild-card round, they'd travel to New England for the divisional round. If the Jaguars win that game, the Patriots' first game would be against the Titans-Chiefs winner. Win that, and the Patriots would host the AFC Championship Game against either the Steelers, Jaguars, Chiefs or Titans.Reason for hope: Uh ... it's the Patriots. You can have a 25-point lead against them in the Super Bowl, and they still win. Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the greatest of all time at what they do, and there's no team in the field that has even close to the amount of experience the Patriots have in big January games.
Reason for concern: The defense has held together for much of the season in spite of a slew of big-time losses, and it still misses linebacker Dont'a Hightower. That's the kind of thing that could show up in a different way once the competition http://www.losangeleskingsofficialonline.com/Adidas-Rogie-Vachon-Jersey stiffens. They're not far removed from a loss in Miami in which Brady looked terrible and the Dolphins ran all over their defense. So while they're the favorite, they're not invincible.
Path to Super Bowl LII: The Steelers' first playoff game will be a home game against either the Jaguars, Titans or Chiefs. If the Bills beat the Jaguars, the Steelers would host the Titans/Chiefs winner in the divisional round. If the Jags beat the Bills, Jacksonville travels to Pittsburgh for the divisional round. If the Steelers win their first game, they would play in the AFC Championship Game against either the Patriots, Bills, Titans or Chiefs. It would be a Steelers home game unless the opponent is the Patriots.
Reason for hope: The defense appears to be in better shape than it was this time last year, with Cam Heyward healthy and some of the younger guys like Artie Burns and Javon Hargrave having grown in their roles throughout the season. We know what the Steelers can do on offense if healthy, but this year's defense has been consistently tough and gives Pittsburgh a better chance of slowing down Tom Brady & Co. than they've had in recent seasons.
Reason for concern: The health of WR Antonio Brown. He suffered a serious calf injury in Week 15 and missed the final two games of the regular season. The Steelers are hopeful that they'll have him for their playoff opener, but they can't be sure (A) whether they will or (B) how close to full strength he will be. Pittsburgh has been derailed by injuries to Brown and/or Le'Veon Bell in recent playoff runs, and the fact that Womens Terrence Ross Jersey they held Bell and Ben Roethlisberger out of Sunday's regular-season finale shows you just how panicked the Steelers are about not having
their stars for the games that mean the most.X factor: The run game. Dion Lewis has been a machine, and the Patriots will lean on him to carry the load. But their run game is at its best when it has diversity with Rex Burkhead and James White, who can be factors in the passing game as well. Each has dealt with injuries toward the end of the season, and it will be important for New England to get them back for their playoff run. Brady can bring the Patriots back at the end, but it helps to control games if they have balance on offense.
X factor: Wide receiver Martavis Bryant. He has been disgruntled for much of his first season back from suspension. He asked for a trade early in the season and probably will again after the season. But the Steelers kept him because they believe he can be a game-changing weapon for them with http://www.chicagoblackhawksofficialonline.com/Adidas-Jonathan-Toews-Jersey his rare combination of size and speed. He was (obviously) a bigger part of the game plan with Brown out in late December. Perhaps that sparks something that makes a difference in January.
Path to Super Bowl LII: The Authentic Jorge Soler Jersey Jaguars' first playoff game in 10 years will be a home game against a team that hasn't played a playoff game in 18 years. They will host the Bills in the divisional round. Should they win, they would travel to Pittsburgh for their second-round game, and if they win that, they would play an AFC Championship Game against the Patriots, Chiefs or Titans. If they get that far, the Jaguars would host the AFC Championship Game as Julius Erving Authentic Jersey long as the Patriots are not their opponent.
Reason for hope: No team in the AFC field plays defense the way Jacksonville does. The Jaguars have stars at all three levels. They can rush the passer, their corners can cover receivers one-on-one and their linebackers are versatile. Prior to Sunday's game against the Titans, which was meaningless to them, the Jaguars hadn't lost to an AFC opponent since Oct. 1, when the Jets beat them. On either side of that game, they whipped the Ravens 44-7 and won 30-9 in Pittsburgh.
Reason for concern: The franchise hasn't played a playoff game in a decade, and the roster is loaded with dudes who've never played http://www.officialwhitesoxproshop.com/Joe_Crede_Jersey in one. This is a team built on its run game and its defense, which means it's built to play from ahead. Blake Bortles spent most of December red-hot, but if the Jags fall behind, is he capable of bringing them back?
X factor: Wide Charles Haley Jersey receiver health. The Jags lost top wideout Allen Robinson in the first game of the season and have had to play at times without Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns because of injury. And while Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook have shown flashes, teams don't want to be leaning too hard on rookies at this time of year. At some point, the Jags will have to rely on their passing game. When that time comes, it would help to have Lee and Hurns in there and healthy. Path to Super Bowl LII: The Saints will host the division-rival Panthers, against whom they went 2-0 this season, in their playoff opener. If they win that, they'll travel to either Philadelphia or Minnesota for the divisional round. (If the Falcons beat the Rams, a victorious Saints team would go to Minnesota. The only way the Saints can play the NFC Championship Game at home is if their opponent is the Falcons.
Reason for hope: They have the best quarterback in the NFC field. Drew Brees might not have had his usual, eye-popping statistical season, but his efficiency was off the charts. And just because the Saints were able to win by running the ball and making a few big plays on defense doesn't mean they can't count on Brees to put them on his back and win them a game when they need him to. He's the only quarterback in the field who has won a Super Bowl.
Reason for concern: There's http://www.ravensshopfootball.com/Authentic-Breshad-Perriman-Jersey really not much not to like here, but if you're looking for reason to worry, four of their losses were on the road and four were to playoff teams. However, two of those were in Weeks 1 and 2 to Minnesota and New England, and the Saints obviously didn't have their feet under them yet. They will be more formidable in the Superdome. X factor: The defense. It's still a young group, and until you see young players under playoff pressure you can't know what to expect. New Orleans' offense is so good and so versatile and so balanced that you feel certain they can score with any team. But can that young Saints defense make a big play to win a playoff game when it needs to?
Path to Super Bowl LII: Iman Shumpert Authentic Jersey The Panthers have to solve the Saints in order to start their road back to the Super Bowl. They went 0-2 against New Orleans this season. But if they beat them this time, they will travel to either Philadelphia or Minnesota in the divisional round. (To Philadelphia if the Rams beat the Falcons, to Minnesota if the Falcons beat the Rams.) Win that, and the Panthers would land in an NFC Championship Game against either the Eagles, Vikings, Rams or Falcons. The only way that game would be at home is if it were against the Falcons.
Reason for hope: The Panthers know the way to the Super Bowl as well as anyone in this field, having reached the big game two years ago. There has been a lot of turnover since then, but quarterback Cam Newton, tight end Greg Olsen and linebackers Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly are the team leaders and all were part of that run. That 2015 Carolina team was a front-runner that went 15-1 and didn't confront much adversity until the Super Bowl, when it crumbled. This Carolina team has overcome a lot and shown a seasoned contender's ability to thrive under difficult circumstances.
Reason for concern: The passing game. The Panthers entered Sunday's regular-season finale ranked 27th in the league with 194.4 passing yards per game and 21st at 6.24 yards per pass attempt. They win with their run game and their fearsome front seven, and Newton's ability to make plays with his legs when things break down is a big part of what they do. When they do throw it, it's often short to dynamic running back Christian McCaffrey. But with Kelvin Benjamin shipped off to Buffalo, Curtis Samuel injured and Devin Funchess playing hurt, there aren't many downfield weapons for Newton in a league that tends to require one or two of those in big games.
X factor: Olsen. http://www.officiallaramsauthentic.com/Cory-Littleton-Jersey.html He missed nine games with a foot injury but returned late in the season and looked like his old self down the stretch. If he can stay healthy and productive in the coming weeks, it's possible he could help cure what ails the Panthers' passing game.
Path to Super Bowl LII: The Falcons will open in Los Angeles. Beat the Rams, and they get a trip to Philadelphia the following week for a matchup with Nick Foles' Eagles, who suddenly look a little vulnerable. If they win that, they'd get an NFC Championship Game in either Minnesota, Charlotte, New Orleans or Los Angeles. As the No. 6 seed, the Falcons cannot play a home playoff game.
Reason for hope: They've done this before, and not long ago. The Falcons were a division champion and had a bye last season, but they did reach the Super Bowl and came about as close as a team can come to winning it without winning it. Their coaches, quarterback and pretty much whole roster knows what it takes to win these games, and while the season was rocky, once teams get into the field, you never know what might happen. Running back Devonta Freeman looks fantastic, too.
Reason for concern: The season was rocky, and http://www.officialfootballauthentics.com/los_angeles_lakers-c-1593_1688.html the offense isn't humming the way it was this time a year ago. Something has been off with the Matt Ryan/Julio Jones connection almost all season. Maybe it's as simple as the change in offensive coordinators, but maybe it's just a factor of "not every year is great." The Falcons have hurt themselves with drive-extending penalties and just Scott Simonson Youth jersey generally don't look like the same operation they looked like in 2016.X factor: Jones. While he hasn't had his best season, Jones is capable of making any catch at any time and taking over a game, as he did against Green Bay in last year's NFC title game. If he and Ryan find that elusive connection, he'll be a nightmare for any opponent.

We have arrived, at long last, upon the NFL postseason. This is lousy news for 20 teams but wonderful news for 12. And if you're a fan of one of those 12, this right here is the document you want to clip and save -- or whatever the 2018 internet equivalent of that might be.
ESPN's 2018 playoff primer breaks down each team's path, looks at its chances and tells you everything you need to know about what your team must do to reach Super Bowl LII next month in Minneapolis. We hope you find it enjoyable and educational. Path to Super Bowl LII: The Eagles get a bye, then will host either the sixth-seeded Falcons Alex Pietrangelo Jersey (if they win their first-round game), the fourth-seeded Saints or the fifth-seeded Panthers. Win that, and the Eagles would host the NFC Championship Game against either the Vikings, Rams, Saints or Panthers.
Reason for hope: The Eagles have been the best team all season. Their only losses entering Sunday (when they rested many starters in a home loss to Dallas) were road defeats in Kansas City and Seattle -- hardly anything of which to be ashamed. Even at their worst, which they were against the Giants on defense in Week 15 and against the Raiders on offense in Week 16, they've managed to find ways to win. They are deep and talented on both sides of the ball and can play a variety of styles and still win.
Reason for concern: Don't know if you've heard, but star quarterback Carson Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14, and the Eagles are rolling into the playoffs with Nick Foles. While Foles looked great in his first game, he doesn't offer Wentz's ability to make chicken salad on third and fourth downs. That was a key element of what made Philadelphia different from the other NFC contenders all season, and without it they may be just one of several very good teams in the NFC field.
X factor: Jay Ajayi. The Eagles should have the ability to lean on their run game to control games, especially once they take the lead. They got Ajayi to be a guy on whom they could rely for a heavy workload, and so far they haven't used him that way. It's possible they have a plan for him in the playoffs that would offer a new dimension to an offense that needs a post-Wentz jolt.
First game: Home game in divisional round on Sunday, Jan. 14 (4:40 p.m. ET on Fox) | Tickets Path to Super Bowl LII: The Vikings will get a bye week and then host a playoff game Jan. 14 against either the Rams, Saints or Panthers. If the Falcons beat the Rams in the wild-card round, the Vikings would host the Panthers-Saints winner. If the Rams beat the Falcons, the Vikings would host the Rams. If they win that, they would play in an NFC Championship Game either in Philadelphia or at home against the Falcons, Saints or Panthers.
Reason for hope: The defense is an absolute monster. Entering Sunday's game, the Vikings had held four of their previous six opponents under 10 points, and two of those opponents were the Rams and the Falcons. They allowed the fewest points per game and fewest yards per game of any team in the league. They had the second-best third-down defense and the second-best goal-to-go defense. You wish they were better at generating turnovers (just 19 all season entering Sunday), but the defense is so good at limiting opponents in so many situations that it should keep http://www.officialrockiestore.com/Carlos_Gonzalez_Jersey the Vikings in every game. Reason for concern: Since they didn't secure the No. 1 seed, Derick Brassard Youth jersey the prospect of having to win an outdoor game in Philadelphia to advance to the Super Bowl (which would be in their own home stadium, by the way) Antti Raanta Jersey looms large. And as http://www.authenticstlouiscardinals.com/Adam-Wainwright-Jersey great as Case Keenum's story and season have been, we haven't seen him tested under playoff pressure.
X factor: The pass protection. One of the key elements to Keenum's season has been the Vikings' ability to keep him protected. Entering Sunday, he'd been sacked just 20 times -- fewer than any other quarterback in the NFC field besides Drew Brees. (And of course Nick Foles, who has started only three games.) Can the Vikings' improved offensive line keep Keenum clean against the type of pass rushes he'll see on the road to Super Bowl LII?Path to Super Bowl LII: The Rams host the defending NFC champion Falcons. If they win that, they would travel to Minnesota for a divisional-round game against the Vikings. Win that, and the Rams would find themselves in an NFC Championship Game either in Philadelphia or at home against the Saints or Panthers.
Reason for hope: The Rams were the highest-scoring team in the league at 31 points per game before Sunday's white-flag, regular-season finale. Todd Gurley, who didn't play Sunday, led the NFL with 2,093 yards from scrimmage, and with top wideout Robert Woods back from injury, the passing game is in position to click the way it was during the middle part of the season. Coach Sean McVay isn't running out of creative offensive ideas anytime soon.
Reason for concern: Same as for a lot of teams in this NFC field -- inexperience. Jared Goff has been an NFL starter for a season and a half. Gurley is a third-year player. The wideouts and tight ends are a young, inexperienced group. And there's also the fact that no other potential playoff team but Tennessee entered Week 17 with more turnovers than the Rams' 19. The margin for error shrinks this time of year. MLB Jerseys Usa NBA Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys China Nike NFL Jerseys China MLB Jerseys China |

| add to favorites | Finding the single memory that defines each baseball season since 1903 | Hardware - Hard disks |
I couldn't tell you off the top of my head who won the 1945 Brandon Dubinsky Authentic Jersey World Series, but I could tell you that a goat got kicked out of it. I couldn't tell you who the best pitcher in baseball was in 1956, but I could tell you who threw a perfect game in that year's World Series. I don't remember who hit the most home runs in 1990, but I do remember that the Mariners' No. 2 and 3 hitters -- both of them named Griffey -- hit back-to-back dingers one day that year. Most of us remember these things like we remember our first phone number.
We would probably all be surprised to find out what history will remember about our era. Once the eyewitnesses die, a lot of weird stuff gets remembered, and a lot of stuff that seemed important at the time gets forgotten. I got to wondering what history will remember about 2017 -- what a late-21st century kid raised on baseball trivia books, This Date In History radio segments and her granddad's memories will know about this past season. To answer that requires first figuring out what gets remembered and why.
So, with the help of a few smart baseball friends, I charted 114 years of baseball by the single most memorable fact of each season -- the one thing a fairly serious baseball fan has probably heard of from that year. What we learned: There are exactly seven ways to be remembered. Plus subcategories.
For example, 1905 was the year Christy Mathewson threw three shutouts in the World Series, and 1959 was the year Harvey Haddix took a perfect game into the 13th inning, and 1982 was the year Rickey Henderson stole 130 bases, and 1967 was the year Carl Yastrzemski won the last Triple Crown of the century. It sure does help when the number is a record, which necessitates us constantly bringing
it up whenever Womens Yogi Ferrell Jersey somebody remotely challenges them. If somebody throws three no-hitters in a row next year, you'll subsequently hear Johnny Vander Meer's name about 95 percent less often than you do now.
Incredible single play, or sequence of plays, often aided by iconic photo or video images
These are the single moments when a player was so good, so impactful or so loud it overwhelms the rest of the season. Of course, 1954 was the year not of the Authentic Sergio Romo Jersey 111-43 Cleveland Indians -- the best record in AL history -- but of The Catch.
History is a long drive, and as with all long http://www.bruinsteamprostore.com/Brandon_Carlo_Jersey drives we remember the first and last miles more than the hours of unchanging landscapes in the middle. On the merits, the first World Series -- in 1903 -- wasn't that memorable, and in many ways, the play would have been unrecognizable to a modern fan: One team's ace was ineffective after injuring himself in a trap-shooting contest, another pitcher threw five complete games, and the best player on the field (Honus Wagner) made six errors. And yet nobody would dispute that the 2017 Series and the 1903 Series belong to the same lineage, which makes 1903 the infrastructure upon which our modern game is built.
And so 1922 is the year baseball got its antitrust exemption, and 1929 is http://www.officialpacershop.com/authentic-11-domantas-sabonis-jersey.html the year Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig first got uniform numbers, and 1935 is when night baseball began, and 1946 is when Jackie Robinson desegregated the minors, and 1950 is when Vin Scully started broadcasting games -- unless that one belongs under category 2b ...
We can debate what's modern, but there are various points where the Womens Jersey weird old-timey baseball they used to play became the cool and normal baseball we all love http://www.authenticmagicproshop.com/authentic-9-nikola-vucevic-jersey.html now. Which is why 1952 is the year Topps launched the modern baseball card, why 1965 is the year of the draft, and why 1976 is the year of free agency. This is probably the category for 2002's Moneyball A's -- a great team, but more historically memorable as the first modern team

The rookie kicker nailed the long field goal as time expired to give the Eagles a 27-24 win over the Giants in Week 3. That was the first Jeff Skinner Youth jersey sign Philadelphia might be in for a special season. Quarterback Carson Wentz was miked up Jake McCabe Womens Jersey for that game and was overheard saying he'd give Elliott his game check if he made the kick. Instead, the two decided to donate money to charity. Worst moment: Losing Carson Wentz for the rest of the season
Wentz tore the ACL in his left knee in a Week 14 win on the road against the Rams. The Eagles clinched the NFC East that night but lost their MVP-caliber signal-caller for the season. "He was the first person greeting everyone in the locker room on the way in," said safety Malcolm Jenkins. "I don't know what to tell a man in that situation; I just told him I loved him as a teammate, loved him as a friend. Obviously, everyone is feeling for him." -- Tim McManus
The Redskins' most complete victory was their http://www.authenticbluejaysstore.com/Authentic-Russell-Martin-Jersey 27-10 win over the Raiders in Week 3, but the best moment was when they rallied in the final minute to beat the Seahawks on the road, thanks to two clutch throws by quarterback Kirk Cousins, catches by Brian Quick and a diving catch by Josh Doctson. They only had 43 healthy players available. It became an improbable win that, at the time, could have led them to a better finish. Worst moment: The Scot McCloughan situation
That's not to blame the Redskins for all that transpired, but regardless, it was not a good situation when the then-general manager failed to show at the combine and his absence was exacerbated with a lie -- saying he missed to attend his grandmother's funeral. The Redskins tried to make the situation work for a couple of weeks, hoping they could get through the draft. Eventually, they fired him, and there was an anonymous quote from a team official blaming his drinking. Whether the Redskins were right or not, it led to questions nationally about the direction of the franchise as free agency began. -- John Keim
On a play that was drawn up (mostly) in the dirt, Rodgers rolled to his left and lofted a 35-yard pass to Cook, who somehow managed to get both feet in bounds before his knees hit the white paint at AT&T Stadium with three seconds left in Harrison Barnes Authentic Jersey the divisional playoff game. It set up Mason Crosby's game-winning 51-yard field goal that sent the Packers to the NFC Championship Game for the second time in three years. The Rodgers-to-Cook throw won an ESPY for the best play of the year. Worst moment: Broken collarbone 2.0
For the second time in five seasons, Rodgers' season was interrupted by a broken collarbone. Unlike in 2013, when Rodgers returned for the regular-season finale and got the Packers into the playoffs, there was no happy ending. He returned, but after the Packers were eliminated from postseason consideration a week later, the team shut him down. The broken collarbone was the biggest contributor to the end of a franchise-record eight straight playoff appearances. -- Rob Demovsky
Last week's playoff-clinching win over the rival Falcons inside a raucous Superdome is certainly a contender, since it ended a three-year postseason drought. But the biggest key to New Orleans' 2017 turnaround was their sensational draft week -- from cornerback Marshon Lattimore's surprising fall into their laps at No. 11 to their third-round trade for running back Alvin Kamara. Those two might wind up as the NFL's Defensive and Offensive Rookies of the Year, and the Saints got a total of five starters from this year's draft class. Worst moment: Learning of Nick Fairley's heart condition
The Saints' low point came back in the spring, when they learned that their defensive tackle had a heart condition that wound up ending his season (and likely his career). The Saints have been able to overcome Fairley's absence for the most part, but it was a http://www.shopbrownsfootball.com/Seth-Devalve-Jersey stunning and sad development. And the Saints would surely be even more potent with him in the lineup, which is why they had re-signed him to a lucrative contract extension in March. -- Mike Triplett
After being forced to take a bye in Week 1 and evacuating due to Hurricane Irma, the Bucs beat the Bears 29-7 in Week 2 at home. Tampa Bay had two offensive touchdowns, and the defense forced four turnovers and held the Bears to just 20 total rushing yards, looking very much like the team that had gone on a five-game win streak to finish 9-7 in http://www.hockeyjetsofficialauthenticshop.com/Jansen_Harkins_Jersey_Adidas 2016. Things unraveled from there, though. Worst moment: The 38-33 loss to the Cardinals in Week 6
After losing a close one to the Patriots 19-14 on Thursday Night Football, the Bucs completely fell apart for the second year in a row against Arizona. The 38-33 score made it look much, much closer than it actually was. At the beginning of the third quarter, they were down 31-0. It was in this game that many fans realized this was not at all the 2016 defense that led the league in third-down conversions and finished third in takeaways. -- Jenna Laine
It didn't take long for the Cardinals to experience their lowest moment. It was in the third quarter of the season opener at Detroit, when the all-everything running back took a helmet to his left wrist, dislocating it in the process. Johnson hasn't played since. Losing Johnson didn't just erase more than 2,000 potential all-purpose yards, but it also took away the foundation of the offense. The scheme was built around Johnson, especially his versatility. What he could do out of the backfield complemented by what he could do as a receiver was the basis for the large majority of Arizona's plays, either involving him directly or using him as Riley Sheahan Jersey a decoy. -- Josh Weinfuss Wholesale NBA Jerseys Jerseys For Cheap Wholesale NHL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Online Cheap NFL Jerseys Usa Basketball Jerseys Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys 2016 |

| add to favorites | Finishing with a top-three draft pick | Hardware - Hard disks |
If you're not going to have your franchise quarterback during what's clearly a rebuilding season, why not speed up the process with a top-three draft pick? The Colts will finish with their worst record since finishing 2-14 in 2011 largely because quarterback Andrew Luck (shoulder) missed the entire season. General manager Chris Ballard can use the high draft pick to address the Colts' desperate need to find a pass-rusher or get more help on the offensive line.
Worst moment: Andrew Luck missing all of 2017 Luck needed right shoulder surgery in January after playing with it injured for more than 16 months. Owner Jim Irsay sounded optimistic when he said the surgery wasn't major and that his franchise QB would be ready for the regular season. Evidently Irsay must have meant the 2018 season, and now it's at the point where he's probably just hoping they'll have Luck in 2018. Luck missed all of the team's offseason workouts, training camp, preseason games and the regular season. -- Mike Wells
The Jaguars have been able to overcome setbacks all season -- from losing wide receiver http://www.officialtorontomapleleafs.com/Adidas-Johnny-Bower-Jersey Allen Robinson in the season opener to having top-pick Leonard Fournette miss three games -- so there haven't been a lot of terrible moments. However, the loss in San Francisco tainted what should have been one of the most triumphant days in franchise history. The Jags clinched their first division title since 1999 when the Rams beat Tennessee earlier in the day, but they went on to have their worst game of the season in the loss to the 49ers. It was hard to really celebrate winning the division after that debacle. -- Mike DiRocco
Marcus Mariota returned from a one-game injury absence to put in arguably his best performance http://www.chicagoblackhawksofficialonline.com/Adidas-Marian-Hossa-Jersey of the season, throwing for 306 yards. It was one of two 300-yard passing games for Mariota this season. Derrick Henry also ran for 131 yards and a touchdown. The offense was exciting, explosive and effective -- for at least one game -- with the world watching on Monday Night Football. The win snapped a two-game losing streak, and, of course, they finally got the monkey off their back. They would later sweep the Colts for the first time since 2002.
Worst moment: The embarrassing 57-14 loss to the Texans in Week 4 The Titans' last-season slide was disappointing, but this blowout loss is worse. Tennessee was coming off a high of beating a relatively healthy Seahawks team in Week 3 before getting outclassed by the Deshaun Watson show in Houston. To make matters worse, Mariota injured his hamstring that day. It's an injury that affected him for the weeks that followed. This is also the day the national buzz around the Titans came to a crashing halt. -- Cameron Wolfe
When cornerback Aqib Talib cut in front of Dallas wide receiver Dez Bryant to snatch a Dak Prescott pass then sprinted 103 yards for a game-punctuating touchdown, with the home crowd in a full-throated frenzy in the final minute of the win, the Broncos genuinely believed they had shown they were among the league's elite. Two weeks later, they entered their bye at 3-1, eyeing the postseason, only to see their season http://www.panthersfootballofficialonlinestore.com/Jj-Jansen-Jersey collapse into an eight-game losing streak. Worst moment: Losing to the Giants at home in Week 6
If you have your longest losing streak since 1967, as the Broncos did after losing eight in a row, and you suffer your first shutout loss in a quarter-century, it means there has been no shortage of bad moments. But nothing was the same after the Broncos lost 23-10 to the previously winless Giants. Denver outgained New York 412 to 296, but the problems that ruined Brice McCain Jersey the Broncos' season -- turnovers, unreliable special-teams play and the inability to play their best in the moments when games were decided -- spoiled this game and really never left. -- Jeff Legwold
Once considered a maverick owner, Jones was enshrined on Aug. 5, Cody Whitehair Authentic Jersey making him part of the most exclusive club in pro football. Jones was rewarded as much for his three Super Bowl wins in the 1990s as he was for changing the NFL's business model. Hours after his enshrinement, Jones threw a memorable party that included a live performance by Justin Timberlake where Jones and commissioner Roger Goodell seemed to get along amiably. In the months that followed, things certainly Authentic Joey Rickard Jersey changed, with Jones fighting Goodell's extension and threatening a lawsuit. Worst moment: Ezekiel Elliott's suspension
The initial hope in fighting a six-game suspension handed down on Aug. 11 was for Elliott to play in the season opener, but he managed to play the first eight games through a series of legal maneuverings. On Nov. 9, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York denied Elliott's motion for an injunction, and six days later, the running back dropped his entire legal fight. The Cowboys went 3-3 in Elliott's absence, but not even his return could salvage a run to the playoffs. -- Todd Archer

| add to favorites | Baseball's stealth contenders for 2018 | Hardware - Hard disks |
In 2017, a lot of the teams everyone expected to be top teams went on to unsurprisingly win their divisions. Nobody looked at the Dodgers-Astros World Series and rhetorically asked, "Who woulda thunk it?" But teams such as the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Twins were surprises for many, and those stories tend to be the most fun.
So, who are 2018's stealth contenders who can go on a deep run into playoff contention if enough realistic things go right? I'm not talking about teams we're certain will be good; if we know it's coming, it's not exactly that stealthy, is it? Who could be 2018's version of the Twins?
Altuve, one of only a handful Danny Amendola Authentic Jersey of players who endured the Astros' painful rebuilding process en route to this year's championship, which gave hope to a city ravaged by Hurricane Harvey, was chosen as The Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.
Results of voting by United States editors and news directors was announced Wednesday. Altuve, a 5-foot-6 dynamo, got 715 points, beating out New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (646) and LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers (626).A decade after the Braves left Milwaukee for Atlanta, Aaron returned as a member of the Brewers in 1975. Because the Brewers were an American League team, the then-home run king was able to extend his career by two seasons -- and add http://www.officialseahawksfootball.com/YOUTH+SHELDON+RICHARDSON+JERSEY 22 home runs to his career total -- while playing in the city where his major league career had started in 1954.
Altuve is a five-time All-Star who led the majors with Mika Zibanejad Youth jersey a career-high .346 batting average, and his 204 hits topped the American League. He is the first player in MLB history to lead his league in hits in four straight seasons. He tied a career-best with 24 homers Blake Comeau Jersey and had 81 RBIs. He was second in the AL by scoring 112 runs, his on-base percentage of .410 ranked third, he was third with 32 steals and his .547 slugging percentage ranked sixth.
His work made him the second Astro to win an MVP award, joining Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell, who picked up the National League honor in 1994. Altuve carried his stellar regular season into the postseason, where he paced the Astros in their ALDS win over the Boston Red Sox by hitting .533 with an outrageous 1.133 slugging percentage.
Altuve spent his early years with the Astros toiling in relative obscurity; Houston lost 100-plus games in each of his first three major league seasons, from 2011 to 2013. There was no denying his superstar status this season, as the Astros won 101 games, and he became one of the best stories early in the postseason when he hit three homers in their Game 1 win over Boston.
That performance made him just the 10th player in major league history and first since 2012 to hit three homers in a playoff game. Altuve's story of once being sent home from a tryout because he was too short has been well documented as he has risen to fame. But on the day his huge game led the Astros to that playoff win, he perfectly summed up the mindset he has carried since that setback.
"As soon as I cross the white line, I feel the same size as everyone else," he said. Altuve's grit and determination is evident every time he takes the field. His teammates marvel at the fact that no matter how good he is, he's always looking to do better. "He has four hits and he's like, 'Carlos I never had a five-hit game before, let me try to get the fifth hit,'" shortstop Carlos Correa said. "He's always striving for more. And that's http://www.seahawksofficialsproshop.com/Jarran-Reed-Jersey what I've learned from him that makes me better every single day."
Altuve, who grew up in Venezuela, considers Houston his second home after spending his entire professional career with the Astros. He took great pride in wearing the Houston Strong patch on his uniform throughout the playoffs as a reminder of what the city went through during the storm and how difficult the rebuilding process would be. He said people approach him often to say thank you for helping the Astros win their first title and for being a bright spot in such a difficult time.
We had the responsibility of making it happen for the city," the 27-year-old said. "We wanted to win the World Series for the city. We just wanted to try to see a smile from them." Since winning the World Series, Altuve has been welcomed to Disney World by Mickey Mouse, been a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and been named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year along with Texans star J.J. Watt. Despite all this, Altuve has remained the same humble, soft-spoken man he was when he first broke into the majors in 2011.
"I don't think I'm the face of the city or the Houston Astros," he said. "I'm just another guy who is playing hard to make dreams come true. My dream was to win the World Series, and I know the fans' dream was to win the World Series as well. So we are on the same page, and I really enjoy my time in Houston."

enough to play, he will play Sunday against the Eagles -- despite nothing being on the line. But don't expect left tackle Tyron Smith to play. He lasted three snaps last week against Seattle before realizing his sprained right knee could not hold up. Byron Bell will start for Smith, who has dealt with back, groin and hip injuries. So there is no reason for him to risk further injury. Right tackle La'el Collins and linebacker Anthony Hitchens have been managed through the week as they dealt with injuries and they are expected to play as well. -- Todd Archer
Tight end Evan Engram (ribs) and wide receiver Sterling Shepard (neck) left last week's loss to the Cardinals early. They were at practice Wednesday and stretched before heading off to the side and onto the stationary bikes. The Giants' top two weapons might be a stretch to be ready by Sunday for the finale in a 2-13 season. -- Jordan Raanan
Wednesday's practice report is only an estimation since it was a walk-through, but defensive end Brandon Graham was listed as a nonparticipant. With the No. 1 seed locked up, http://www.49ersauthenticofficialonlines.com/deion-sanders-jersey_c-341.html the Eagles can afford to rest players in the regular-season finale against the Cowboys. Graham is a good candidate. -- Tim McManus
All of Washington's injured players have mostly been shut down for the season, but there are some questions at linebacker. Zach Brown is unlikely to play Sunday against the Giants with an Achilles/knee issue, and rookie Ryan Anderson might play despite sitting out again because of a knee injury. Without Brown, Washington would start a combo of Zach Vigil and Martrell Spaight. Vigil's ability to communicate well has helped the defense and Spaight has been solid. Anderson has been a backup all season. -- John Keim
Right tackle Bobby Massie was held out of Wednesday's practice because of a knee injury he suffered in last week's win over Cleveland. Massie missed only one game since the Bears signed him in the 2016 offseason, but the veteran is a question mark for the regular-season finale at Minnesota. Starting guard Josh Sitton was the only other player to sit out Wednesday because of an ankle injury. Sitton is doubtful to play again in 2017. The team holds an option worth up to $8 million on Sitton for 2018. -- Jeff Dickerson
Cornerback Nevin Lawson (concussion) still did not practice Wednesday, so monitoring his progress for the regular-season finale will be something to http://www.officialcoyotesonline.com/Lawson_Crouse_Jersey watch. So, too, will be T.J. Lang's foot injury. At this point, the Lions have to make decisions on whether it is worth it to risk the health of some guys heading into the offseason James Neal Authentic Jersey versus playing a little bit more. -- Michael Rothstein
It looks as if the Packers will be without both Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson for the season finale against the Lions. Although coach Mike McCarthy hasn't ruled either of them out yet, Adams remains in the concussion protocol, and even if he's cleared, why would the Packers risk playing him after his third concussion in 14 months? Nelson did not practice because of a shoulder injury. A third receiver, Geronimo Allison went home sick Wednesday, leaving the team thin at the position. -- Rob Demovsky
The Vikings signed long snapper Jeff Overbaugh on Tuesday after Kevin McDermott dislocated his left shoulder against Sean Doolittle Jersey the Packers. Defensive tackle Shamar Stephen missed practice Wednesday because of the ankle injury Aaron Lynch Jersey he sustained in Green Bay, as did cornerback Tramaine Brock (foot) and center Pat Elflein (shoulder). Elflein's shoulder injury held him out of practice ahead of the Carolina game and kept him limited for two days last week. Kyle Rudolph is still battling an injured ankle from the Panthers game but has been able to play the Brendan Langley Authentic Jersey past two games. -- Courtney Cronin
Tight end Levine Toilolo injured a knee -- but no tear -- in last week's loss to the Saints and was held out of practice Wednesday. It might not look like a big loss on paper, but Toilolo has established a niche as a pretty solid blocker while breaking free for an occasional catch. If Toilolo can't go, then rookie Eric Saubert, who has been battling a back injury, would have to step in as the second tight end behind Austin Hooper. -- Vaughn McClure
Guard Trai Turner was back working with the first team in practice Wednesday after missing the past two games because of a concussion. Barring a setback, the Pro Bowler should be cleared from concussion protocol in time for Sunday's game at Atlanta. Wide receiver Russell Shepard, who missed last week's game because of a shoulder injury, also http://www.officialsanfranciscogiantsshops.com/WOMENS-DEION-SANDERS-JERSEY.html should be back. He'll help fill the role of Damiere Byrd, who suffered a season-ending leg injury in the win over Tampa Bay. -- David Newton
Wide receiver Michael Thomas was limited in Wednesday's practice, saying the team wants to be "smart" about his workload after a hamstring injury limited him to 40 snaps this past Sunday. Thomas said he "felt good" after playing through the injury, which he had suffered at the end of last Friday's practice. So chances are he'll be close to full speed by this Sunday. Meanwhile, fellow receiver Brandon Coleman missed Wednesday's practice because of a neck injury and left tackle Terron missed because of a thigh injury, leaving their status uncertain. -- Mike Triplett

| add to favorites | NFL's biggest win of 2017 was relaxing celebration rules | Hardware - Hard disks |
A season of electric slides, potato-sack relays and "duck, duck, goose" proved one overriding point for the NFL: Big problems really can be solved. I'm only half-joking. Maybe you enjoyed some of the elaborately planned celebrations that players have performed after scoring touchdowns or making big plays this season. Perhaps it wasn't your thing. But if nothing else, the NFL successfully walled off a self-inflicted source of damaging criticism by relaxing its unsportsmanlike conduct rules to reflect the reality of modern entertainment.
The annual "No Fun http://www.officialphilliesshops.com/WOMENS-CHUCK-KLEIN-JERSEY.html League" narrative largely vanished and was instead replaced -- appropriately -- by smiles, fun debates and the occasional internet dash to Google the references. After a season of strife that included player protests and fundamental problems with the concussion protocol, the effective elimination of a negative might qualify as the NFL's biggest accomplishment of 2017.
The league spent an exorbitant amount of working hours on the issue last winter, speaking to more than 80 current and former players about how to preserve sportsmanship while jettisoning rules that forced flags for harmless celebrations. In 2016, for example, players were penalized for making snow angels, for cradling the Glenn Robinson Womens Jersey ball like a baby and imitating an NBA routine popularized by Kevin Garnett and LeBron James.
The answer was modest but highly effective. The NFL emptied three "buckets" of illegal acts: Players can now use the ball as a prop, go to the ground during a routine and once again engage in group celebrations that highlighted the childhood of many adult fans. It was a modest step, and, frankly, I'm not sure whether officials expected players to take it to the extent they have. Commissioner Roger Goodell used the word "spontaneous" in a letter to fans announcing the change, but the premeditated creativity some players have employed has belied that expectation.
It's difficult to quantify the impact. The expansion of celebrations hasn't reversed problems such as the NFL's broadcast ratings slide, nor should it have been expected to. But it's worth noting that both taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties have dropped back http://www.officialnewyorkislanders.com/Adidas-Clark-Gillies-Jersey to normal levels after spiking in 2016. Taunting fouls have dropped by about 45 percent from over the same period last year, according to the ESPN Stats & Information penalty database. Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, which include but span more than illegal celebrations, are down about 22 percent.
If nothing else, that reduction represented a tangible decrease in opportunities for fans and outside observers to ridicule the league for avoidable displays of misplaced morality and tortured explanations. Over time, that criticism conjured a narrative that squarely placed the NFL on a needless defensive.
As most of us already knew, celebrations (with reasonable limitations) haven't led to weekly on-field brawls or the debasement of youth sportsmanship. It has been notable, in fact, how many of the celebrations have drawn inspiration from children's games or otherwise kid-friendly sources -- from the Vikings' leapfrog to the Steelers' reenactment of the "Elf" snowball fight to the Falcons' red light/green light celebration.
Along the way, the world continued to turn on its axis and it was -- gasp! -- fun to see what would spawn in the minds of today's players. In some cases, an expansion of legal celebrations almost assuredly prompted a shift away from what was still illegal. Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, for instance, largely dropped "twerking," which the NFL still considers a sexually suggestive dance. The transition has not been perfect, of course. For one, we still see a silly flag every now and then. Permission to use the ball as a prop did not extend to other parts of the field, so officials had no choice but to penalize Seattle Hau'oli Kikaha Womens Jersey Seahawks cornerback Justin Coleman for jumping into a Salvation Army kettle in Week 16.
Meanwhile, it's obvious that some teams and/or coaches have either opted out or discouraged the orchestration. After New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Brandin Cooks celebrated rodeo-style in Week 12, Gronkowski insisted unprompted that it "wasn't planned" and added: "We got yelled at. We're not allowed to talk about celebrations."
I'm surprised that more coaches didn't put the kibosh on celebrations, especially after the Steelers drew a delay-of-game foul in Week 2 after a celebration. The mark-off forced coach Mike Tomlin to scrap plans for a two-point conversion. But even some of the NFL's crustiest coaches have sat back and watched Womens Tennessee Titans Jersey their players entertain. Mike Zimmer's Vikings, for example, http://www.authenticseattlemarinersshop.com/Jarrod-Dyson-Jersey conjured up "duck, duck, gray duck," among others. Zimmer embraced a reasonable approach, one the league should never have lost when it started filling its rulebook with celebration restrictions. "If we score a lot of touchdowns," Zimmer said, "I'll jump in with them."
In all sincerity, the NFL should be pleased with the outcome of this modest initiative. As it girds for an offseason of addressing much more significant problems, it can be guided by an easy lesson: Common sense is always a good path to follow. | add to favorites | What moves to make if you want to play with MLB's 'Super Seven' | Hardware - Hard disks |
What they should do next: The Cardinals already have made one of the biggest transactions of the offseason, acquiring Ozuna from the Marlins for three prospects, but all indications are they’re looking to make another big one, with the Josh Donaldson rumors heating up once again. For that deal to happen, the Cardinals would have to include some MLB-ready talent as the Blue Jays aren’t willing to pack it in for 2018, so maybe Jedd Gyorko and somebody from the outfield pool (Randal Grichuk, Tyler O’Neill) goes back to Toronto.
The Cardinals added Mikolas, the former major leaguer who has starred in Japan the past couple of seasons, apparently to replace Lynn in the rotation, but they still need a closer. Wade Davis is the obvious fit, with Addison Reed a cheaper (and lesser) alternative. The rotation has a lot of questions (Is Mikolas the real deal? Is Luke Weaver ready to step up? Will Adam Wainwright be less awful? When will Alex Reyes be ready?), but the Cardinals have enough options for now that they probably can see how things play out and make an in-season move if necessary.
What they should do next: The Diamondbacks have added a couple of closer candidates to replace Rodney, although Hirano’s strikeout rate has plunged the past couple of seasons in Japan, and Boxberger has had trouble staying healthy since leading the American League in saves with Tampa Bay in 2015. It makes sense to keep Archie Bradley in a more flexible role, so we’ll see whether the ninth inning becomes a problem or Bradley eventually takes over.
The main issue for Arizona, however, is that the offense isn’t good. As with the Rockies, the home field masks this, but outside of Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb (who can’t hit lefties), everyone else on the roster had a below-average adjusted OPS in 2017. Jonathan Lucroy is a fit to replace Iannetta as the primary catcher -- I can’t see them giving more at-bats to Jeff Mathis -- but the price has to be right given that Lucroy is coming off a bad season.
More important, the Diamondbacks should be looking to add an outfielder. A.J. Pollock and David Peralta aren’t exactly pictures of durability, and Yasmany Tomas has been worth minus-2.2 WAR in his career. He’s not good; any power he provides is canceled out by a poor Ted Lindsay Jersey OBP and bad defense. Chris Owings is a utility guy, not a starting outfielder on a playoff team. Martinez is too expensive to bring back, so maybe you go with Carlos Gomez, who can start in right field and fill in for Pollock in center. If they want to spend a little more money, Lorenzo Cain would be a great fit. It’s getting deep enough into the offseason that maybe the price for a guy like Cain will drop into Arizona’s range.
What they should do next: Billy Eppler has had a dream offseason, not only luring Ohtani to the Angels and keeping Upton from leaving but also shoring up second base and third base, where the Angels ranked last and 25th in the majors in wOBA.
What’s left to do? Add a starting pitcher. And that guy should be Yu Darvish. The projected payroll, according to Cot’s Contracts, is about $165 million, similar to last year, but that still leaves room to sign Darvish and stay under the $197 million tax threshold. The Angels are projected to win 88 games on FanGraphs; add Darvish and maybe they have a chance to chase down the Astros if everything goes right (Houston is projected to win 97). If Ohtani http://www.officialbuckstore.com/Rashad_Vaughn_Jersey is the real deal and Garrett Richards can stay healthy, a top three of Darvish, Richards and Ohtani could be good enough to make a postseason run -- a deep postseason run.
What they should do next: You won't chase down the Cubs by bringing back Gallardo, that’s for sure. OK, Chacin should be viewed as the bigger signing coming off a 3.89 ERA for the Padres, but we’ll see whether he can replicate that kind of season. The advanced metrics liked what he did in 2017 as he limited hard contact with an average exit velocity that was among the best among starting pitchers. I’ll take Chacin at two years, $15.5 million over what Jake Arrieta is asking.
I also don’t get the Domingo Santana trade rumors, considering he had a breakout season after leading the team in OBP and hitting .278/.371/.505. Maybe the Brewers aren’t buying those numbers and want to sell high to clear room for Lewis Brinson, but I’m skeptical of Brinson’s ability to produce right away. His track record in the minors is spotty except for big numbers in High Desert in 2015 and Colorado Authentic Adam Eaton Jersey Springs in 2017, two places where everybody hits. So I'd keep Santana and let Brinson challenge Keon Broxton in center field.
The Chacin and Gallardo signings probably close the gate on another starting pitcher. They could get in on the Gerrit Cole trade Terence Garvin Youth jersey talks, but many of the Brewers' top prospects took a step backward in 2017, so it would be hard to outbid the Yankees. I guess that leaves re-signing Walker for second base, although giving Jonathan Villar a chance to bounce back isn’t a terrible idea either. I’d add a bullpen arm to replace Swarzak, http://www.bostonbruinsofficialonline.com/Adidas-Jimmy-Hayes-Jersey maybe David Hernandez. It all adds up to an offseason that won’t push the needle much. The payroll still projects as one of the lowest in the game at $71 million and the Brewers were more than $100 million in 2014 and 2015, so there’s room to add pieces, but it appears they’re saving money for next offseason. of the pack without claiming the trophy for himself. Gurley, on the other hand, has come roaring out of the pack and gone from totally outside the MVP picture a few weeks ago to standing as a possible favorite. It's the difference between not losing an award and http://www.officialcelticsproshop.com/Terry_Rozier_Jersey winning it, and while Brady hasn't done anything that would cause him to drop out of the John Johnson Womens Jersey race, Gurley has crashed the party.
Those are all arguments I expect the voters will take up if they lean toward Gurley, but in evaluating Gurley, I don't know if I believe he has really done enough to overcome the massive divide in value between quarterbacks and running backs. He's on pace to finish with 2,233 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns, and while that's impressive, it isn't all that much different from the 2,118 yards from scrimmage and 20 scores David Johnson racked up for the Cardinals in 2016. I understand that they weren't competitive, but few people (myself aside) argued that Johnson should receive serious MVP consideration.
Gurley has probably been the best running back in football in 2017, but the difference between him and Bell mostly comes down to a few touchdowns in short-yardage situations. Bell will likely get within 100 yards of Gurley's scrimmage total after a game against the rapidly fading Texans on Monday, and while they'll be way ahead of the rest of the pack, Gurley is not going to be way ahead of his fellow running backs in terms of cumulative production in the way that Peterson, Alexander and Tomlinson were in years past.
I also don't Markus Naslund Youth jersey think voters value receiving yards as much as rushing yards for backs. Consider that Chris Johnson had an even more impressive version of this Gurley season for the Titans in 2006 -- with 2,006 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns and a league-record 2,509 yards from scrimmage -- and didn't receive a single MVP vote. Maybe he would have done better if the Titans had finished above 8-8 that year, but the last back to win league MVP with Gurley's sort of statistical profile was Faulk, and he scored 26 touchdowns.
If I had a vote, I'd pick Brady right now. Voters lean toward late-season performance and love to pick fresh faces, but those are biases that unfairly fault players for succeeding earlier in the year. Is Brady really a worse candidate because he played his best football in late October and early November, when Gurley was posting his least productive stretch of the season? The wins Brady contributed to count for just as much as the ones Gurley is contributing to in December, right?
What I will say, though, is that I wouldn't close the door on the race. Both of these players will likely have something meaningful to play for in Week 17. Assuming the Steelers beat the Texans, Brady will start Sunday at home against the Jets knowing New England needs a win to clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Rams, meanwhile, will be kicking off simultaneously with the Saints on Sunday needing a win to clinch the third seed in the NFC. Unless the Saints fall way http://www.ravensofficialfootballshop.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_CARL_DAVIS_JERSEY.html behind the Buccaneers in Tampa, McVay is likely to employ Gurley like it's a meaningful regular-season game.
The race is close enough to come down to what happens in Week 17. Gurley will be facing a 49ers team that allowed him to score three times (and only narrowly stopped him from hitting four) in a Week 3 shootout, and that was before the 49ers acquired Jimmy Garoppolo and started averaging 27.5 points per game. It's hardly out of the question to think Gurley breaks off another huge game and stamps his name atop the MVP ballot. Without multiple touchdowns in the game, though, I still think Brady has done enough to hold on and claim a much-deserved third trophy.
Feels like last year we heard a ton of pre-draft talk about how the quarterback class wasn't so great. Turns out it had Deshaun Watson, who was pretty special until tearing his ACL in practice in early November. And Mitchell Trubisky ended up starting for the Bears before it was all over. Heck, Authentic Denard Span Jersey DeShone Kizer started for the Browns right away ... although maybe he shouldn't have.
Anyway, that was last year. This year's quarterback draft class is the talk of the NFL town. It has been since last offseason. Seriously, at the combine last year, teams would moan about the quality of the quarterbacks in the draft and say, "But next year ..."
Well, next year is here, so how does it look? There are a couple of SoCal dudes still turning heads, a big guy in Wyoming who makes scouts drool and a Heisman-winning bad boy who may or may not be 6 feet tall. It's a fun group, and will dominate a lot of our attention in the four months leading up to the 2018 NFL draft.

| add to favorites | That lead in touchdowns might be critical | Hardware - Hard disks |
Le'Veon Bell could eat into the deficit during Pittsburgh's game Monday, but Gurley is in good shape if he maintains that massive advantage. Since the 1970 merger, five other running backs have made it to the end of the season while leading the league with a touchdown total seven or more scores ahead of the competition. Three of them -- Tomlinson, Alexander and Marshall Faulk -- have finished
their seasons with an MVP trophy. As for Brady, meanwhile, this isn't an otherworldly campaign. Many of his competitors have fallen by the wayside thanks to injuries, but his league lead in passing yards is by a mere 259 yards over Philip Rivers. He trails Wentz in passing touchdowns despite playing two additional games. Brady is third in completion percentage and yards per attempt and second in passer rating behind Alex Smith.
Brady's season is also below the typical standard we see from MVP-winning quarterbacks. Pro Football Reference tracks quarterback statistics and adjusts them for the scoring level of each year in question as index stats. (More on them here.) Across the board, Brady's era-adjusted statistics in 2017 would make him one of the least imposing MVP winners in recent memory. Here's where he ranks among the 33 other winners of this award since 1970 in PFR's index stats (updated through Week 16):
This isn't even really a particularly notable season for Brady relative to his typical level of play. Rank Brady seasons and, even with a week to go, this one will finish no higher than fourth in passing yards. This season would rank fourth in yards per attempt, sixth in touchdown-to-interception ratio, fifth in passer rating and eighth among 11 http://www.officiallachargers.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_HUNTER_HENRY_JERSEY.html recorded seasons in Total QBR. It's a great campaign for mortal quarterbacks and a good one for Brady, but it's a step below the stratospheric seasons that won him this award in 2007 and 2010.
This is going to be a problem with his candidacy, although it has nothing to do with Brady himself. Voters in all sports, including football, get easily exhausted of perennial candidates and often prefer players who either took a leap forward from their Mychal Rivera Jersey established level of play and/or haven't won an award previously. Brady could quite viably have been a candidate for most of the past decade and has won only two awards. Likewise, Bill Belichick has won Coach of the Year three times in 17 seasons with the Patriots, even though just about every one of us would have picked him as the best football coach alive for 13 or 14 of those campaigns. As much as we know Belichick might deserve Womens Fabian Moreau Jersey the award on a near-annual basis, he doesn't even receive serious consideration most seasons by virtue of setting his own bar impossibly high.
There are exceptions, but if a vote is close, most of the voters tend to lean toward the new face over the guy who will be back next year. Gurley, who looks like a different human than the guy we saw in 2016, is that new face. He's in the middle of what would be a career year for just about any running back. Gurley won Offensive Rookie of the Year for an explosive 13-game campaign in 2015, but he would have never received even the slightest bit of MVP consideration before now.
He doesn't need to make monster plays to be effective, obviously, but the Brady engine works on supreme efficiency. He beats you by staying ahead of schedule, avoiding turnovers and finding receivers for easy completions drive after drive after drive. Brady's style doesn't lend itself to highlight reels. He has eight completions on throws traveling 30 yards or more in the air this season, only one of which has led to a touchdown (against three picks). Rob Gronkowski is the guy who gets lauded for spectacular plays on this team, not Brady.
Gurley, meanwhile, ranks alongside Gronk, Alvin Kamara and Antonio Brown as the season's most spectacular players. Nobody tracks it, but Gurley must hold the record for most times leaping over a defender in a single season. His longest play in 2016 went for 33 yards; this year, Gurley has 10 plays for 33-plus yards, four more than anybody else in the league. He somehow accelerated through the Titans' defense Sunday in taking a screen to the house for an 80-yard score. Gurley is making professional defenders look like overmatched kids from college.
Brady has been among the top candidates for this award all season, and deservedly so. It's also fair to say that he has never really grabbed the trophy for himself. He was neck-and-neck with Carson Wentz for most of the year, and after Wentz went down, Brady http://www.officialsseahawksshop.com/Amara_Darboh_Jersey_Cheap never had the sort of game to stand out versus the competition. Brady failed to throw a touchdown pass the first time against the Bills, delivered a dud without Gronkowski against the Dolphins, then had his winning touchdown drive against the Steelers overshadowed by the drama of the touchdown stolen from Jesse James. | add to favorites | Todd Gurley's surging case for MVP, and why the GOAT still has an edge | Hardware - Hard disks |
First, it was Tom Brady vs. Carson Wentz. Then, it was Tom Paul Molitor Authentic Jersey Brady vs. Antonio Brown. Now, after both those superstars went down with injuries, the most obvious competitor standing between Brady and his third MVP award is a record-setting running back. http://www.nflramsofficialonline.com/RAMS-TRUMAINE-JOHNSON-JERSEY Todd Gurley has been absolutely unconscious over the past three weeks. The Rams running back has eight touchdowns during that span, which is more than the entire Browns roster has over its past six games combined.
t has been a stunning season for a player who spent most of 2016 stuck in the mud for a going-nowhere Rams team. The Rams will host the franchise's first home playoff game in California since 1985 during wild-card weekend, and while the turnaround of Jared Goff under the tutelage of Sean McVay has been shocking, it's difficult to imagine the Rams making the playoffs without their workhorse at running back.
Gurley has been great, but should voters really pick him over Brady? Or should the Patriots' signal-caller deserve recognition for the latest in a series of dominant seasons? Let's make the case for why Gurley is likely to receive serious consideration, then pick an MVP favorite with two games and one week left in the season. The five-point plan for Gurley to win goes as follows:
The Associated Press voters are only human. They make their choices in late December, so they're naturally going to be thinking about what Oliver Kylington Authentic Jersey each candidate was doing over the final month of the season. Think about Adrian Peterson, who struggled early in the 2012 season and then ran off nine 100-yard games in 10 weeks to end his season, including a December with two 200-yard games and a 199-yard Jonathan Allen Womens Jersey effort in a playoff-berth-clinching victory over the Packers in Week 17. His final run of the year was a 26-yarder that set up the game-winning field goal and saw him carried off the field by a teammate as the entire crowd chanted "MVP." You couldn't have written a better case for Peterson.
Gurley, meanwhile, got off to a hot start before slowing down as the Rams went with a heavier dosage of their passing attack in November. He failed to average even 60 rushing yards per game in November and scored three touchdowns across four contests. That was in a month in which the Rams dropped 51 points on the Giants and 33 on the Texans before losing to the Vikings and narrowly topping the Saints.
In December, though, Gurley has been a monster. He has specifically peaked over the last three weeks of the season, which coincide with the fantasy football playoffs. Voters obviously aren't going to treat Gurley differently because he won some of them their fantasy leagues, but to put his production in context, the 23-year-old just enjoyed the best fantasy playoffs (Weeks 14-16) in NFL history:
In comparison, while Brady has put together a great season, he's not peaking in December. The future Hall of Famer has thrown six interceptions over his past five games, including a pick-six in Sunday's 37-16 victory over the Bills. Brady had thrown just four picks in his previous 22 starts dating back to his return from suspension in 2016. Bothered by an Achilles injury, Brady has thrown more interceptions (five) than touchdowns in December, with an 81.5 passer rating placing him below Mitchell Trubisky and just ahead of Tom Savage for 19th among qualifying passers this month.
While Gurley was struggling during midseason, Brady was running off one of the hottest stretches of the season, posting a 114.7 passer rating http://www.texansfootballsprostore.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_GREG_MANCZ_JERSEY.html while throwing nine touchdowns without a pick. We probably shouldn't treat games in December as more meaningful in terms of MVP consideration than the ones in previous months, but that's the way voters seem to think about the process, so it would be foolish to ignore Gurley's blistering December season.
Recent history suggests that running backs need to post crooked numbers to overcome the positional bonus handed to quarterbacks and receive even modest MVP consideration. Peterson nearly set the rushing record by running for 2,097 yards in 2012. The previous MVP to come from behind the quarterback was LaDainian Tomlinson, who racked up a staggering 31 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2006, including 28 rushing scores. One year earlier, Shaun Alexander ran for 27 touchdowns. If you want the hardware as a running back, the bare minimum requirement is to have a rushing-yardage total or a touchdown total that starts with the No. 2.
It's tougher for a running back to generate the gaudy numbers of even a decade ago with modern workloads, but Gurley could finish the season with some truly impressive stats. If he scores twice in what is likely to be a shootout with the 49ers on Sunday, Gurley will be the first running back to top 20 touchdowns in a season since Tomlinson in 2006. He holds a seven-touchdown lead over every other player in the league, with no other running back, wide receiver or tight end topping 12 scores.

Allen didn't have any FBS offers out of high school and had only two after a freshman season at Reedley College. But he landed at Wyoming and became the starter in 2016, and fans of the draft might remember his name from the time when ESPN's Adam Schefter said after the 2017 draft: "There was one personnel director who told me this week that you can put it in the books, Josh Allen will be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft next year."
Scouts look at Allen as a high-end talent, but it's all projection. He has tremendous size and a huge arm, and he made plenty of plays in 2016, when Wyoming had a strong veteran team around him. His numbers http://www.officialshopknights.com/authentic-adidas-68-tj-tynan-jersey didn't show any improvement this season, but his coaching staff and the NFL scouting community seem to blame that on the deterioration of the rest of the Cowboys' roster due to the departures of so many of his weapons prior to the season. What scouts and evaluators see with Allen is elite potential -- the kind for which you're willing to overlook little things, such as a poor season at Wyoming.
Kiper's draft Frank Clark Jersey ranking: No. 3 QB and No. 11 overall prospect. From Kiper's Big Board: "Allen is super raw, but he can really sling it. ... I think Allen's numbers will be much better in an NFL offense with NFL players." McShay's draft ranking: No. 3 QB and No. 15 overall prospect. From McShay's Top 32: "He has an elite arm and frame and can make every throw. The postseason process will be key for him."
Come on. You don't know who Mayfield is? He just won the Heisman Trophy, for goodness' sake. And it's ... well, it's not the first time he has been in the news this year. Mayfield is the interloper on this list -- the scrappy guy who crashed what looked like a big three and made it a big four. His numbers are basically in line with what he put up last season, but doing it again after losing teammates such as Joe Mixon, Samaje Perine and Dede Westbrook to the NFL plus his performance in big games have thrust him into the first-round conversation.
Kiper's draft ranking: No. 4 QB and No. 13 overall prospect. From Kiper's Big Board: "I love him on the field -- he's not afraid to take shots downfield, and he has an underrated arm -- but his size is going to be a question until he gets in front of scouts at the Senior Bowl [he hasn't said whether he'll attend] or the combine."
McShay's draft ranking: No. 4 QB and No. 27 overall prospect. From McShay's Top 32: "The issue for him is that he doesn't have the ideal measurables of an NFL starter, and he doesn't have an elite trait to compensate, like Russell Wilson's scrambling ability or Drew Brees' accuracy."
Jackson is, of course, last year's Heisman winner, and he is a unique prospect due to his remarkable abilities as a runner and a passer. He has eclipsed both 3,400 passing yards and 1,400 rushing yards for the second straight season, and to watch him is to watch a quarterback who can dominate a college game in multiple ways. Defenses have to account for him differently than they do any other quarterback because of his elite speed and dynamic running.
Kiper's draft ranking: No. 7 QB. From Kiper's take on the Heisman finalists: "From the NFL scouts I've talked to, I think teams are going to ask Jackson to work out as a quarterback and a receiver. They want to see if he could make the transition if he didn't develop enough as a QB."
McShay's draft ranking: No. 7 QB and No. 88 overall prospect. From McShay's preseason scouting report: "Jackson needs to continue to improve Anthony Rendon Jersey his accuracy as a passer. That's the bottom line. Right now, he's a phenomenal college quarterback mostly due to his running skills and athleticism."
ackson probably will run a 40-yard dash time at the combine that will be unheard of for a quarterback, and teams will spend the next couple of months trying to http://www.officialauthenticcardinalsstore.com/womens_pat_tillman_jersey figure out what to do with him. If you bring him in, how much work do you have to do to refine his pure passer abilities? Can he help you in the meantime? Will you have to curb his running in order for him to survive in the NFL?
And if you curb his running, does that limit his upside as a high draft pick? There has been at least some chatter about the possibility of a position change if it doesn't work out at quarterback, but his performance at that Womens Addison Reed Jersey position in college surely merits a serious look before teams decide to move on and make him a wide receiver. He and Louisville will take on Mississippi State at noon ET on Dec. 30 in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

1 pick, the Giants moved closer to locking down the second spot and now have a projected average draft position of 2.3. The 49ers are moving in the opposite direction (6.9), though that is of little concern to them given the emergence of Jimmy Garoppolo.
Below is FPI's projected order for the 2018 draft, based on each team's average draft position in the simulations. While each team's current record is listed below, remember that the order is based on the record the model believes the teams will have after 16 games:
Feels http://www.officialnetsproshoponline.com/authentic-24-rondae-hollisjefferson-jersey.html like last year we heard a ton of pre-draft talk about how the quarterback class wasn't so great. Turns out it had Deshaun Watson, who was pretty special until tearing his ACL in practice in early November. And Mitchell Trubisky ended up starting for the Bears before it was all over. Heck, DeShone Kizer started for the Browns right away ... although maybe he shouldn't have.
Anyway, that was last year. This year's quarterback draft class is the talk of the NFL town. It has been since last offseason. Seriously, at Brice McCain Authentic Jersey the combine last year, teams would moan about the quality of the quarterbacks in the draft and say, "But next year ..."
So, let's have a bit of a look at where things stand in late December, shall we? We'll include notes from ESPN NFL draft experts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay, plus insight from personnel people in the league. And skip to the end here to see which teams might actually draft one of these QBs in the first round -- there are several possibilities:
Rosen caught everyone's attention with a 3,670-yard freshman season in 2015. NFL scouts love the way he looks in the pocket -- his footwork, throwing motion, anticipation and accuracy. After an injury-plagued 2016 season, he rebounded in 2017 with numbers nearly identical to those he put up as a freshman. Injuries set in again, though, and with Chip Kelly and a new coaching staff on the way in, it seems like a sure thing that Bobby Baun Jersey Rosen will enter the draft. He's enough of a prospect to merit consideration at No. 1 overall -- especially if Sam Darnold doesn't come out.
Kiper's draft ranking: No. 1 QB and No. 4 overall prospect. From Kiper's Big Board: "I have Rosen over Darnold for now, but it's close, and things could change between now and April. ... There aren't many quarterbacks who can make the throws [Rosen] does." McShay's draft ranking: No. 1 QB and No. 1 overall prospect. From McShay's Top 32: "Rosen is far superior [than Darnold] going through his progressions and has a pretty deep ball. He's a better QB right now, but that doesn't mean he will be down the line."
There's some question as to whether Rosen will play against Kansas State in Tuesday's Cactus Bowl (9 p.m. ET, ESPN/WatchESPN), though UCLA's interim coaching staff believes he will. http://www.steelersnflofficialproshop.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_ROOSEVELT_NIX_JERSEY.html After that, and assuming he enters the draft as expected, Rosen will be subjected to a pre-draft process focused mainly on his injury history and some personality questions that have surfaced in media reports. It's almost certain that he will be picked at or near the top of the draft, but if it's a question between him and another highly rated guy, teams will want to check out anything negative that has come up.
Darnold couldn't beat out Max Browne as a redshirt freshman in 2016, but when Browne was benched after three games, people in the NFL took notice. There was at least some can-he-do-it-again sense about Darnold early this season, after a dazzling 31-touchdown, nine-interception 2016 season and a fantastic Rose Bowl performance against Penn State. Some early-season struggles in 2017 pointed to the concerns NFL evaluators had (and still have) about his footwork and some of his decision-making.
But those same evaluators recognize that USC was affected negatively by graduation and injury issues this season, and the way Darnold has played since Halloween has affirmed what scouts love about his abilities and makeup. It's not certain he will even come out -- and some in the league believe he could benefit from another year in college. But if Darnold does enter the draft, the overall package of potential and college performance makes him a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick. He went first in McShay's debut mock draft.
Kiper's draft ranking: No. 2 QB and No. 5 overall prospect. From Kiper's Big Board: "I think Darnold has a chance to be special, and I believe in his talent long term. Darnold has a big frame, makes quick decisions and is an accurate, natural passer." McShay's draft ranking: No. 2 QB and No. 3 overall prospect. From McShay's Top 32: "His accuracy is terrific and he has special intangibles, but there is definitely a question now as to if he'll declare for the draft." | add to favorites | seed in playoffs, but look shaky against Raiders | Hardware - Hard disks |
PHILADELPHIA -- The good news for the Philadelphia Eagles is they secured the No. 1 seed in the playoffs with http://www.authenticbrewershop.com/authentic-3-orlando-arcia-jersey.html a 19-10 win against the Oakland Raiders. The bad news is they once again looked shaky while doing so.
For the second straight week, the Eagles found themselves in a dog fight with a bad team. Coach Doug Pederson likened what happened the previous Sunday against the New York Giants -- a nail-biter in which an anemic Giants offense racked up more than 500 yards and 29 points -- to his old days coaching high school ball, when a power team would enter overly confident against a lesser opponent and get caught off guard.
Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz cited a lack of urgency, suggesting his unit had grown accustomed to winning easily and wasn't playing with the same fire from start to finish. Both agreed that these were important lessons to learn before the postseason, and that the Eagles would be better off for having been battle-tested.
Nick Foles completed just 19 of 38 passes for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception on Monday. He and the Eagles converted just 1 of 14 third downs. AP Photo/Michael Perez Monday night's performance raises the possibility that the team's issues might go beyond the need for a mentality shift.
Last week, the defense was the issue. This time around, it was the normally reliable offense that struggled. Quarterback Nick Foles (19-of-38, 163 yards, TD, INT) came back to earth following a four-touchdown outing against New York.
He was off-target on a number of throws -- including a pair to tight end Zach Ertz deep in Oakland territory that could have put them in control. His high pass on a short throw to Ertz midway through the fourth quarter tipped off Ertz's outstretched hand and was intercepted by safety Reggie Nelson. If not for the defense's efforts, that could have been the game's key moment. Behind Foles, a team that had been red-hot on third down went just 1-for-14 in those situations.
Former starting quarterback Carson Wentz attended a game for the first time since tearing the ACL in his left knee against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14. Using crutches to get around, he joined his teammates on the sidelines pregame before heading to a team box, where cameras showed him taking notes throughout the game. For the first time, his presence on the field was truly missed.
Still, the Eagles found a way to pull the game out -- just as they did against New York the week prior. A Ronald Darby Robyn Regehr Authentic Jersey interception of Derek Carr late in Doug Gilmour Authentic Jersey the fourth quarter set up a go-ahead 48-yard Jake Elliott field goal with 22 seconds remaining, and the defense capped the night with a Derek Barnett fumble return for a touchdown. The win moves them to 13-2 on the season and ensures that they will not have to leave Lincoln Financial Field until a potential trip to Minneapolis in February for the Super Bowl.
The odds are in their favor historically. Since the 1990 format expansion, there have been 54 No. 1 Dawuane Smoot Jersey seeds. Twenty-eight have made it to the Super Bowl (52 percent success rate), and 13 have won it (24 percent). Pederson can rest some of his Kansas City Royals Womens Jersey players in the regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys if he chooses, and the Eagles then get to sit back and watch the wild-card round, knowing that the NFC playoffs run through their back yard. Despite the record, they http://www.footballredskinsofficialstore.com/Tress_Way_Jersey have not looked like the team to beat of late. Whether they’re able to click back into gear won’t be known until the divisional round of the playoffs.
The Browns are officially on the clock for the 2018 NFL draft. Hours after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen would prefer to land with the Giants over the Browns, Cleveland mathematically locked up the top pick in next year's draft. It's no secret that the Browns are in desperate need of help at quarterback and that Rosen, along with USC's Sam Darnold, Wyoming's Josh Allen and Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, is a potential first-round pick.
Each week, the Football Power Index (FPI) projects the order of next year's draft by simulating the remainder of the season 10,000 times. Game probabilities http://seahawksofficialnflauthentics.com/cary-williams-jersey_c-431.html are based largely on the model's ratings for individual teams in addition to game location. While we don't need to simulate the season's remaining games to know where the Browns will pick next year, we do for the rest of the top 10.
FPI takes some time to run, but on Sundays we can produce a live projection that includes that day's results but does not incorporate changes to FPI ratings based on that day's performances, which is what you see below. In some cases, the projected draft order will not match the current draft order. That's because FPI is considering the probability of outcomes that haven't yet occurred and, crucially, projecting strength of schedule at the end of the season, since that is a tiebreaker for draft order.
