| Tamoxifen powder Halves Breast Cancer Risk in Women With Preinvasive Breast Lesions A VERY LOW DOSE of tamoxifen—5 mg/d, given for 3 years rather than 5 years—halved the risk of breast cancer recurrence or new lesions over placebo in women with breast intraepithelial neoplasia, without producing the usual toxicities seen with the standard dose, Italian researchers reported at the 2018 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.1wisepoqder Tamoxifen “We believe our results have external validity and—given their pragmatic nature and the easy accessibility of tamoxifen—are generalizable,” said Andrea De Censi, MD, of the National Hospital E.O. Ospedali Galliera–Division of Medical Oncology in Genoa, Italy. “Tamoxifen, 5 mg a day (splitting the tablet) or 10 mg every other day, is applicable in clinical practice tomorrow.” Breast cancer experts at the meeting said this is news they can use. “Looking at these data, I would definitely give lower doses of tamoxifen, especially in patients with atypical ductal hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ,” said Virginia G. Kaklamani, MD, Professor of Medicine at The University of Texas at San Antonio and leader of the Breast Cancer Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. “This information tells me I can perhaps cut back on the dose for patients who are not tolerating tamoxifen. This would help me keep them on the dose, rather than have them abandon therapy,” said John Cole, MD, of the Ochsner Health System in New Orleans. ALTHOUGH TAMOXIFEN is effective in preventing breast cancer recurrence, its side effects—menopausal symptoms, endometrial cancer, deep-vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism— are barriers for its use as a preventive measure. The aim of this de-escalation study was to determine whether a lower dose and shorter duration of tamoxifen therapy would be as efficacious as and better tolerated than the standard dose. Dr. De Censi and colleagues had previously shown that a dose as low as 1 mg/d is noninferior to 20 mg in decreasing Ki67 (a marker of proliferation), though less effective in modulating serum biomarkers.2 For the current study, the investigators decided 5 mg/d would be a reasonable compromise between activity and safety. He explained that the government- and charity-funded study could not afford to financially support the use of a very large noninferiority trial of tamoxifen at 20 mg/d for 5 years as the control arm. | ||

| Women with breast cancer risk opting out of tamoxifen powder therapy The study found that of 258 healthy women in England with a family history of the disease, six out of seven decided not to take the drug to help prevent it from developing. Sixteen women were then interviewed in order to determine what factors played a role in their decision, with key reasons found to be a belief that cancer was down to fate, a distrust of medication in general, or fear of side effects would interfere with looking after their family.wisepoqder Tamoxifen powder The research team, based at the University of Leeds, Northwestern University, University College London and Queen Mary University of London, found women with children were more likely to take up the offer of tamoxifen, and that social class, educational attainment and ethnicity had no effect on uptake. In 2013, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence endorsed NHS funding for use of tamoxifen cancer prevention in women at increased risk of the disease due to a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, following research which showed it could lower risk by around a third. According to the guidelines, doctors should offer tamoxifen for five years to premenopausal women at high or moderate risk of breast cancer, unless they have a past history or may be at increased risk of thromboembolic disease or endometrial cancer, and anastrozole for five years to postmenopausal women unless they have severe osteoporosis. For postmenopausal women at high risk of breast cancer with severe osteoporosis, but no history or increased risk of thromboembolic disease or endometrial cancer, tamoxifen should for offered, or raloxifene as an alternative for women with a uterus. “It’s valuable to understand why women might reject tamoxifen, and this research highlights there are a range of complex reasons behind the decision,” said Dr Richard Roope, Cancer Research UK’s senior clinical adviser and GP expert. “It’s vital more work is done to understand these barriers, improve treatments and ensure doctors are getting the support they need to help women decide whether preventative medication is right for them.” | ||

| B-MS Discontinues d-Sotalol powder Trial Bristol-Myers Squibb has discontinued its oral d-sotalol SWORD (survival with oral d-sotalol) trial due to a monitoring committee report of excess mortality in the treated group compared to placebo. The Phase III trial was intended to study the effect of the drug in preventing sudden cardiac death in myocardial infarction patients at risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia. Originally, the compound was intended as a single isomer follow-up to B-MS' Betapace (sotalol) drug.wisepoqder Sotalol The excess mortality came to light after the SWORD data safety monitoring committee examined interim data from 2,762 patients and determined that the overall mortality in the d-sotalol group was 3.9% compared to 2% in the placebo group. The SWORD trial was touted by B-MS as the largest of its kind and had enrolled 3,000 of the planned 6,400 patients. Because of problems with Class I (sodium channel blockers) and Class II (beta blocking) drugs, focus has now shifted to the Class III potassium-blocking agents, said B-MS. Sotalol has both Class II and III activity, but the single d-isomer is purely Class III in action. SWORD is one of 15 studies in progress evaluating d-sotalol in the prevention of ventricular tachyarrhythmia. The other prevention trials are studying different patient populations than in the SWORD trial. B-MS said that study of the compound will continue. However, all trials of d-sotalol with SWORD-like patient and protocol profiles will be discontinued and enrollment in the supra-ventricular arrhythmia trial has been halted pending protocol revision. ...And Withdraws Questran Tablets Bristol-Myers Squibb is also withdrawing Questran (cholestyramine) tablets in the USA and Canada, following seven reports of patients experiencing swallowing difficulties with the tablets including two reports of choking episodes. The 1gm tablets were launched in May last year at a 10% discount to the oral suspension formulation. Neither of the powder forms are affected by the withdrawal. | ||

| Study points to the futility of urine tests for Salbutamol powder doping Salbutamol powder, also known as albuterol, is a medication that opens up constricted medium and large airways in the lungs and is often used to treat asthma. Because high doses are suspected by some to also have an anabolic effect, its daily dosage is restricted by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which uses urine tests to determine violations. A new British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology study shows that large variability in urine concentrations, however, lead to infeasibility of determining an administered dose from a single untimed urine sample.wisepoqder Salbutamol powder The authors noted that the current threshold inadvertently leads to incorrect assumptions of violation, whereas many violations will go unnoticed, especially when samples are taken long after drug administration. These issues, combined with the dubious assertion of its anabolic effect, indicate that the large effort involved in testing should be reconsidered. "Using available pharmacological knowledge, we demonstrate that the current approach to detect excessive salbutamol use is fundamentally flawed and cannot differentiate between illegal and allowed use," said co-author Jules Heuberger, of the Centre for Human Drug Research, in Leiden, The Netherlands. "If the doping community is determined to control for excessive salbutamol use, these procedures should be changed, ideally in collaboration with clinical pharmacologists." | ||

| Raloxifene Powder: 7 things you should know 1. How it works Raloxifene Powder decreases bone resorption and turnover. It is not a hormone; however, it mimics the action of estrogen on bones while at the same time blocking the effect of estrogen on other tissues.wisepoqder Raloxifene Raloxifene belongs to the class of medicines known as estrogen agonist/antagonists (also called selective estrogen receptor modulators [SERMs]). 2. Upsides May be used for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. May also be given to lower the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, or other postmenopausal women at risk of invasive breast cancer. Long-term use of raloxifene does not carry the same risk to breast and womb tissue associated with estrogen-based hormone therapies. Raloxifene is usually taken as a once-daily dose. Raloxifene is available as a generic and under the brand name Evista. 3. Downsides If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, take no other medication or have no other medical conditions, side effects you are more likely to experience include: Hot flashes, joint or muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, weight gain, increased vaginal discharge, gastrointestinal complaints (such as indigestion, bloating, gas, nausea), flu-like syndromes, infection, sinusitis, and a rash. Raloxifene has only been tested in postmenopausal women. May increase the risk of blood clots that occur in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), lung (pulmonary embolism) or eye. May also increase the risk of stroke; the risk is higher in women with coronary heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, going through menopause, who smoke, or who are overweight. Raloxifene may increase the incidence of hot flushes and leg cramps. May not be as effective as bisphosphonates or estrogen at preventing bone loss. Although raloxifene may be used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women, it does not treat breast cancer and is not a cancer medicine. May not be suitable for some people, including those with a history of blood clots, cardiovascular disease, liver or kidney disease, high triglycerides, with a history of breast cancer, or who take certain medications (such as warfarin, statins, or estrogen replacement therapy). Avoid raloxifene in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Notes: In general, seniors or children, people with certain medical conditions (such as liver or kidney problems, heart disease, diabetes, seizures) or people who take other medications are more at risk of developing a wider range of side effects. For a complete list of all side effects, click here. 4. Bottom Line Raloxifene is not a hormone, but it mimics estrogen, and may be used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women or to lower the risk of invasive breast cancer in women with osteoporosis. Hot flashes are a common side effect. 5. Tips May be taken with or without food. Your doctor may advise you to take supplements such as calcium or vitamin D while you are taking raloxifene. Take them as directed. Keep your appointments with your doctor, even if you feel well. An appointment is how your doctor can check that raloxifene is effective for you and how you are tolerating raloxifene. If you have surgery scheduled, tell your doctor you are taking raloxifene because it may need to be temporarily discontinued about three days before surgery if you will be experiencing periods of inactivity or bed rest. Also, tell your doctor if you are planning to go on a long trip or plane flight and will be inactive for long periods. Tell your doctor if you experience any vaginal bleeding, breast pain or enlargement, or swelling of the hands or feet. Seek urgent medical help if you experience any shortness of breath, calf pain, or chest pain. Weight-bearing exercise can help osteoporosis and you should talk to your doctor about exercises that are recommended. 6. Response and Effectiveness Research has shown that raloxifene significantly and consistently suppressed bone turnover within three months and this persisted for the duration of the trial (24 or 36 months). Decreases in levels of other minerals, such as total calcium, total protein, albumin, and inorganic phosphate were small and less than that typically seen with estrogen or hormone therapy. Spine and hip bone mineral density increased by 2-3% with raloxifene administration. 7. Interactions Medicines that interact with raloxifene may either decrease its effect, affect how long it works for, increase side effects, or have less of an effect when taken with raloxifene. An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of the medications; however, sometimes it does. Speak to your doctor about how drug interactions should be managed. | ||
| add to favorites | How to increase Wi-Fi bandwidth | Cars |
| How to increase Wi-Fi bandwidth A slow internet connection is frustrating, especially if you don’t know why it’s slow. If your videos suddenly start buffering or web pages take longer than usual to load, chances are you’re not getting enough bandwidth. Let’s find out how to increase your bandwidth and improve your browsing. What is bandwidth? To fix the problem, we first need to define bandwidth and the impact it has on your connection speeds. When it comes to computers, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be downloaded or uploaded from your computer in a set period of time. It’s measured and expressed in bits per second (bps). What is bandwidth Your bandwidth is mostly determined by your device, your router, your Internet Service Provider (ISP), and the bandwidth they promised you. However, even if your contract said that your connection speed would be up to 20 Mbps, that doesn’t mean you will always get maximum bandwidth – especially if you connect multiple devices to the same network and use them all at once. Why? Your bandwidth is like a two-lane highway where all the cars (data) travel at the same speed. Driving is fun as long as there aren’t too many cars. The more crowded it gets, the slower you’ll go. More lanes, or bandwidth, on the highway can solve the problem. Is your bandwidth insufficient? Let’s test it If you think you have a low bandwidth problem, run a speed test and compare the results with the numbers advertised by your ISP. If you only have one device connected to the internet and you are not downloading any files, the results should be close to what you were promised. However, if you tend to have multiple devices connected at once and love streaming videos and sharing files with your friends, it may be that you need more bandwidth. Here are 3 simple solutions you could try: If you have a basic internet plan. -> Upgrade to a better plan with more bandwidth. If your ISP doesn’t offer enough bandwidth for your needs. -> Ditch it and go to another ISP. If you don’t want to invest in an upgrade but need more speed. -> Try limiting the number of devices connected to the internet or ask your family members to pause their downloads for a while. You could also turn off the Wi-Fi and use a wired connection. No luck? If you’re satisfied with your internet plan and your internet speeds were fine during your test, it’s likely the problem lies in: Your computer. You won’t be able to enjoy fast internet connection if your machine is not able to process the data it’s receiving. Maybe it’s time to get a new computer? Your router. It may be that your router is overworked. Try rebooting it and don’t forget regular firmware updates. Also, keep it in an open space – away from the walls and other obstructions. Your neighbors' Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi equipment communicates over channels, which tend to overlap. Try using a different wireless channel with fewer users on it. You could even consider getting a dual-bandwidth router that broadcasts on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Your ISP. If you notice that your speeds are slower during specific times of the day, your ISP is likely throttling your connection. ISPs do so to reduce network congestion during peak times and by targeting certain activities. Use a VPN to bypass internet throttling – ISPs will no longer be able to monitor what you do on the internet and, as a result, will not be able to block or limit your connection. When come to the issue of online privacy and security, we suggest to use a VPN, and our recommendation is RitaVPN. RitaVPN is an excellent tool for protecting your online privacy and security. | add to favorites | Personal Wi-Fi safety tips | Cars - Economy cars |
| Personal Wi-Fi safety tips We lock our doors, install alarms, and even put bars on our windows to protect our devices, but we leave our home Wi-Fi insecure. Why? Read on to see how to secure your Wi-Fi, enhance your router’s safety, and protect your home network. Why you want to secure your Wi-Fi Piggybacking: Other users connecting to your unsecured Wi-Fi may be on the lower end of the threat spectrum, but it still raises some concerns. In most cases, this results in reduced bandwidth as part of your connection is being stolen. Depending on your service plan, this may also lead to higher costs. In rare cases, someone using your Wi-Fi to perform illegal activities can get you in trouble, as the authorities may identify you as the culprit. Prevent Wi-Fi-based attacks: Hackers seek out unsecured networks because they're great attack vectors. They can scan your traffic to learn your passwords, perform “man-in-the-middle” attacks, breach your devices or even find your home address. Secure your router: Depending on the router and the hacker, some unsecured Wi-Fi networks can be exploited to break into your router as well. This gives the hacker even more options. They can turn your router into a part of their botnet to hide their illegal activities, use it for crypto-mining, or passively monitor your traffic even when they're gone. How to secure your Wi-Fi .Set up a new Wi-Fi password. This is a basic security method that helps to prevent unauthorized access. Having no password or keeping the default factory one is like having a public Wi-Fi – anyone can join in. Change it to a strong password using these tips or try the NordPass random password generator. . .Change the default settings for your network. Many routers come with factory-default passwords, SSIDs (your network name), and other details that hackers can easily find online. Change anything you can that won't affect the actual functionality of your router. .Filter MAC addresses. You can improve your Wi-Fi security further by filtering the MAC addresses of the devices you want to connect to your network. This makes it difficult for any other device whose MAC address hasn’t been added to the network to connect to it. .Turn off SSID broadcasting. Your SSID is broadcasted at all times. It makes it easier for new devices to find and connect to your Wi-Fi, but it also makes it equally as easy for hackers to find it too. These signals can be easily scanned and transformed into heat maps that show where a certain network is. These maps are readily available to average users or stalkers, too. However, you can turn off SSID broadcasting to protect your home network. If you disable SSID, that doesn’t mean that you will no longer be able to find your Wi-Fi. You’ll just have to manually enter your Wi-Fi name when looking for your Wi-Fi network. . .Disable UPnP. Many routers have UPnP enabled by default. UPnP helps external devices connect automatically and discover other devices on your home network. However, it presents many vulnerabilities as your router doesn’t question whether connections coming from the UPnP protocol are trustworthy. This way a hacker can use a UPnP connection to connect to your network. Without UPnP, you’ll have to manually configure port forwarding. However, this is worth doing because it improves your overall network security. .Log out of your router’s web interface. Some routers may be vulnerable to cross-site scripting attacks. These are difficult to defend yourself from as they target the websites you visit rather than the router itself. However, if you forget to log out of your router’s web interface, hackers can use it against you, leak your login details and breach your network. . .Set encryption on your router. Did you know that you can encrypt your router? You can do this by going to your router’s security settings and looking for ‘Encryption.’ It’s recommended to use at least WPA2 and nothing less than WEP encryption. Don’t forget a strong password, too. . .Disable remote access. You can configure most routers through a web interface. All you need to do is open your web browser and enter your router’s IP address. You should only be able to do this when connected to your local network. However, some routers do offer remote access, meaning that you can tamper with a router’s settings even if you are on the other side of the world. . If this feature is enabled, it also means that hackers may be able to access your router without credentials, usernames or passwords. To turn it off, open your router’s web interface and look for the ‘Remote Access’, ‘Remote Administration,’ or ‘Remote Management’ feature. Most routers will have it disabled by default, but do check it before you move on! . .Make sure that your Windows Firewall is on. If you are a Windows user, make sure that this built-in security feature is on. It will filter and block potentially harmful programs from communicating with your device and will protect your network. You can check whether it’s on by typing ‘firewall’ in your search bar, opening ‘Windows Defender Firewall,’ and looking for ‘Windows Defender Firewall state’ – it should be on! . .Update your router’s interface. The software that runs on your router – its firmware – isn’t perfect. Like any other software, it goes out of date. Router manufacturers tend to issue firmware updates to patch security holes that old firmware might present. However, the problem is that your router won’t remind you to do this the way your operating system would. . To check whether you need to update your firmware, go to your router’s web interface. Most of them will indicate when your firmware was updated last and whether there’s a new version you can install. . .Connect your router to a Virtual Private Network (VPN). This step will actually secure devices AFTER they connect to your Wi-Fi, not in the local area while they connect. Enabling NordVPN on your router can have trade-offs, but it will make every device that connects to your Wi-Fi more secure. Click here to find out how to do it. . When come to the issue of online privacy and security, we suggest to use a VPN, and our recommendation is RitaVPN. RitaVPN is an excellent tool for protecting your online privacy and security. | add to favorites | How to recognize and protect yourself from riskware | Cars |
| How to recognize and protect yourself from riskware Just because a program does what it’s supposed to doesn’t mean it’s necessarily safe. It may also have many vulnerabilities hackers can exploit. Find out what riskware is, the most common types of riskware, and how to deal with the potential risks. What is riskware? Riskware is a portmanteau of “risk” and “software.” These are legitimate programs that were never designed to be malicious but can be exploited or reused by hackers to wreak havoc on your computer and your network. It can slow down your connection and impact your device performance. It can also be used to access, delete, copy, block, or modify your files and data. Riskware examples Remote administration helps many companies and employees get remote technical support. For example, what if your computer starts acting up on a work trip? You’d contact your IT team and they’d use remote access to see what’s the issue. Problem solved! However, hackers can try to exploit an already existing Remote access app and turn it into a gateway to your device. You won’t even notice that a hacker now has a full access to your computer! They can also try to use this legitimate app and install it on your device through other means. Your antivirus won’t pick up on it and the hacker will be able to use it as effectively as malware. File downloaders are stealthy programs that don’t contain viruses on their own, so they usually bypass antivirus software scans. Their primary purpose is to connect to the internet and download other programs. Can you trust it not to secretly download a malicious and unwanted program? Operating system patches optimize our devices’ performance and stop hackers from finding and exploiting new vulnerabilities. However, some patches can lead to more problems than before. For example, Apple once fixed an iOS security bug that made people’s phones more vulnerable to jailbreaking and hacking. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t download updates, but you should follow news about your devices to make sure you’re aware of any inadvertent risks. Other riskware includes IRC clients, dialer programs, password management utilities, and Internet server services – such as FTP, web, proxy and telnet. How to protect your devices from riskware 1. Prevent The best way to protect yourself from malicious programs is prevention. Only download programs from reputable sources and make sure to update them regularly. Also to minimize the risks use Windows Defender real-time protection or an antivirus. They will notify you if and when someone is getting unauthorized access to your device. 2. Detect Few antiviruses can detect riskware because they are supposed to be used for legitimate purposes. However, you can try premium antiviruses or third-party malware-detecting software that may be able to detect riskware. Regularly check the files and programs installed on your device. Do you remember downloading them? Do you ever use them? 3. Evaluate Once you detect riskware, you need to decide whether the risks it presents can be controlled and mitigated, or whether it needs to be removed. For example, you may not want to delete Remote Access software on your work computer that’s been installed by your employer. You know it’s there and can control who uses it to get access to your device. If you become aware of any security vulnerabilities, you can discuss them with your employer. However, you should think twice about keeping a program you don’t remember ever downloading or using. If you do come across one, try to find out what it does. If it’s not essential for your device and you have no idea how it got there – you should probably delete it! How to find your lost iPhone 1. Go to icloud.com/#find and sign in with your Apple ID. 2. Wait for iCloud to find your phone. It may take a few moments, so don’t panic. Once the scanning is done, it will show your phone’s location on a map. However, it’s not specific enough to give you the address or building where the phone is. 3. Now check your phone’s parameters. You can do so by clicking on All Devices (if you have more than one linked to your iCloud account) and choosing the phone you lost or just clicking on Your Name’s iPhone. This will open a new tab on the right-hand side. It will show you when your phone was last active and how much battery it has left. Iphone Lost mode 4. If you think that your phone might be in the same room or building, you can trigger it to play a sound. Just click on Play Sound. 5. If you think that you lost it somewhere else and that someone might find it, you can turn Lost Mode on. This will lock your phone and show a push notification with a number to call. To do so, repeat the steps above, but instead of clicking Play Sound, click Lost Mode. Enter a phone number you would like someone to call, and a message such as ‘My phone was lost. Please call this number.’ Iphone Lost mode Your phone will also be locked with your current passcode. If you haven’t previously set a passcode before you turn on Lost Mode, you’ll be asked to set a new one. Just don’t forget it as you will need it to unlock your phone once you retrieve it! If your device is offline when you put it in Lost Mode, it will be activated once it gets signal or the next time it’s turned on. 6. If you think there’s no hope to get your iPhone back or that it’s been stolen, you should erase its data. You can do so by following the same steps above and clicking Erase Mode. Are there any Lost Mode risks? If you’re one of those people who forget or lose their phones all the time, you may always want to leave this feature on. However, you should know that any location tracking app can be exploited and used against you. In this case, your iCloud Lost Mode feature provides a remote door to your phone. If hackers get your account password from one of the many breaches we’ve seen this year and get into your iCloud account, they could cause some real damage. How? If you don’t have a passcode to your phone, they can create a new one and completely lock you out; They can erase all your data without your permission; They can track your location without your knowledge. What’s even worse is that if a hacker does get into your iCloud account, they will have access to even more sensitive information. This could include your emails, contacts, photos, calendar appointments, and more. Make sure you practice good internet behavior and use strong passwords to protect yourself from hackers. | Which security questions are good and bad? What makes a good security question? Many platforms ask you to choose a security question, which you will need to answer when logging in or resetting your password. But how do you choose a question that is difficult to crack, but easy for you to answer? Good questions should have answers that are: Memorable. The answer to the question should pop into your head straight away, even if you’re logging in 2 years after you first created the account. Don’t make it the song you listened to on repeat 10 years ago. Unique. The question shouldn’t have multiple likely answers. Pick something that’s precise, simple, and straightforward. And don’t try to be cheeky and go with a fake answer, lest you outsmart yourself and forget it two months down the line. Consistent. It should be factual and not change over time. For example, your tastes in music might change, but the city you were born in won’t. Unpredictable. Don’t make the answer something others can easily guess or research. No one except you (and maybe the person involved in that specific life event) should know the answer. And don’t make the mistake of sharing such personal information on social media, or take Facebook quizzes that try to trick you into revealing this information! Security question examples: Good or bad? Let’s examine some good and bad questions. Good: What was the name of the boy or the girl you first kissed? – This is a good question as it’s personal — most likely you’re the only one to know the answer. In what city did you meet your spouse/significant other? – A good personal question with a consistent answer. However, the answer may be easy to guess, especially if you’ve never moved countries, haven’t traveled much, or married your high school sweetheart. What is the middle name of your youngest child? – A great question if you have kids, since this information most likely won’t be available anywhere outside your child’s passport. What was the name of your first stuffed animal? – A question that requires a consistent and specific answer. Not all kids have a favorite stuffed animal, but if you did, there’s probably no one else in the world who knows its name. In what city or town did your mother and father meet? – It’s personal and specific. Only you and your family members will know the answer. This information most likely cannot be found on social media, either! Good security questions Bad: In what city or town was your first job? – This information can be easily found on LinkedIn, or easily guessed if you’ve never moved to another city or country. What primary school/high school did you attend? – This information can be easily found on LinkedIn or social media channels like Facebook. What is your mother’s maiden name? – It may take a little bit of digging, but a hacker could find this information from social media or national registries. What is your favorite movie? – This is a question without a consistent answer. Something you really liked yesterday might not be the movie you’ll love today, since new movies are released all the time and your tastes change. What was your favorite sport in high school? – A weak question, especially if your Facebook profile is full of pictures of you playing rugby, cheerleading, or doing any other sport. And if it’s not, then there’s a chance that the answer can be guessed if you post a lot of articles about football, for example. Is there anything else I can do? Yes! First, limit the information you share on social media profiles and your posts. You don’t need to list your hometown on Facebook to create a profile. Have a look at these tips and reevaluate how you can make your social media profiles more private. This will make the hackers’ job way more complicated. When come to the issue of online privacy and security, we suggest to use a VPN, and our recommendation is RitaVPN. RitaVPN is an excellent tool for protecting your online privacy and security. And with the using of RitaVPN, you can also access your favorite geo-blocked content. It allows P2P connections on all servers and offers specialized servers for Netflix and other favorite streaming channels. | Hangzhou Foreign Languages School Hangzhou Foreign Languages School (HFLS), Chinese: colloquially referred to as , or Hangwai), is a grade 7-12 public high school located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, People's Republic of China. Founded in 1964, HFLS is one of the country's first eight foreign language schools. Stipulated by the Ministry of Education, 20% of the students from each graduating class are exempted from the National Higher Education Entrance Examination and directly admitted into top Chinese universities.international school in hangzhou In 1963, a shortage of qualified recruits for diplomatic service led the new Chinese government in Beijing to adopt new policies aimed at producing an institutional recruitment pool of talented students proficient in foreign languages through primary and secondary education. Hangzhou Foreign Languages School was thus established, together with seven other equivalent foreign language schools in the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Changchun, Nanjing, Xi'an, Chongqing and Wuhan. In 1964, the middle school division of the HFLS was located on the site of the Affiliated Middle School Attached to Hangzhou University, known today as Xuejun Middle School; whereas the primary school division was established, located on the campus of Zhejiang Infant Normal School. The latter half of the HFLS had to move around twice before 1966, when the two divisions of the HFLS merged into one single institution located on Zhejiang Infant Normal School's campus. As Cultural Revolution began that same year, the HFLS stopped recruiting new students, and current students left the school after 1969, with students in primary school division being transferred to elementary schools nearby and all HFLS's middle school students joining the "Down to the Countryside Movement." The HFLS faculty, with the exception of English teachers, were all told to leave. 1964, junior section of HW borrowed canteen of Hangzhou University, using them as classrooms. The school was able to recover and rejuvenate institutionally after the Cultural Revolution ended, and became a grades 7-12 high school. In 1991, the HFLS moved into a new campus on Academy Road. In September 2003, the school moved again into its brand new suburban campus on Liuhe Road, and as a result was able to drastically expand the size of its student body. In January 2016, the HFLS moved to new campus on Liuhe Road, that was right next to the old campus. (This campus is currently used) In January 2016, the HFLS relocated for another time to a new, smaller campus further to the west on Liuhe Road, after decisions were made to downsize the school and revoke many of its privileges in recruitment and admission that had been instrumental to its erstwhile success. | ||

| 10 Reasons Should move to shanghai You may have heard studying abroad in Shanghai referred to as “non-traditional,” but with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, why go with traditional?Moving to Shanghai One thing is consistent among students returning from study abroad in Shanghai: it defied their expectations. Shanghai, a city with the 2nd largest population (yes, the size of the city can handle its 24 million people, plus tourists!) is teeming with possibilities. It’s a dynamic metropolitan city with its own unique pulse, which makes it difficult to define unless you experience it for yourself. In celebration of the IES Abroad Shanghai Center’s 10th anniversary, we’re revealing the best kept secrets—with the help of our students who’ve been there, done that—of what it’s really like to study abroad in Shanghai. With the help of our Ambassadors from our Shanghai Economy, Business & Society, Engineering, and Summer Internship programs, we’re dishing out why you should consider Shanghai as your study abroad destination: 1. It has food from all 23 provinces in China…and the rest of the world. Let one thing be clear: Shanghai is a foodie’s paradise. Forget what you learned from Chinese food in the States, this city attracts a diverse selection of the best flavors from all over the country (and world!) for its hungry urbanites. There’s something for everyone, such as delicious xiǎolóngbāo (soup-filled dumplings), street noodles prepared before your eyes, or, for the more adventurous, the local’s favorite–stinky tofu. What’s more, you can experience this wide variety of food all in one place: the popular Yunnan Road. This street has specialty cuisine from all 23 provinces in China –in just one place! An added bonus? Our Center is right next door. Grabbing delicious snacks between classes has never been so easy, and delicious. 2. It's the second-largest city in the world (really!) To put it into perspective, Shanghai is about eight times larger than New York City, and has at least five million more people living within its city limits. A city this big means more of everything: more to do, more to see, more activities, events, and life everywhere you look. “I knew Shanghai was big, but I didn’t grasp how big until I was there,” says Ryan D.(IES Abroad Shanghai Engineering, Spring 2018 | University of Tulsa). A city that big can be overwhelming, but study abroad gives you the chance to pick up and move there knowing you’ll have a built-in cohort of fellow U.S. students, and you won’t need to worry about securing safe and central housing. Consider it handled! 3. It is a multicultural melting pot. On par with New York City or London, modern Shanghai society has different cultures woven throughout. Surprised? Shanghai has always been a meeting point of East and West, and continues to be a confluence point of cultures today. Throughout its history, Shanghai has been a major port for Europe and Asia. At points, it has been occupied by European and American concessions and also housed a community of Jewish refugees during the war. Paired with modern industry, this unique past set the stage for the global Shanghai you see today. Don’t let the cultural collage intimidate you, though! “If a student is ever craving a piece of home, there is ample opportunity to hop on the Metro and go to a more Western area of the city or find a cool burger joint for some American grub,” says Lexi K. 4. It’s home to two of the top universities in China, where you can take courses in English with Chinese students. Many Chinese students start studying at a young age to get into a university in the prestigious C9 League, also known as China's Ivy League. Both of our partner universities, Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University – Joint Institute (SJTU-JI) both are in the C9 League and welcome IES Abroad students to take classes. Take the opportunity to experience stellar academics without a language barrier, and make local friends in the classroom while you’re at it. The Shanghai Center plans a handful of events to help you engage with local students, including an SJTU buddy program, basketball games, BBQ with language partners, KTV Karaoke nights, and more! 5. It has an amazing public transit system, but it’s also one of the best places to just truly wander. Our Ambassadors all agreed that their favorite activity was exploring the new city that was their home. Shanghai is well connected by metro, less than $1 USD will get you almost anywhere in the city in less than an hour! “When I got comfortable with the subway system, I used to pick a random stop to get off at and just check out the area,” says Kameelah S.T. (IES Abroad Shanghai Economy, Business & Society, Fall 2017 | Spelman College). “I found a ton of cool restaurants, shops, and parks that way!” Bike sharing is also wildly popular in Shanghai, giving you more ways to see new places, or change up your commute. Develop a relationship with your new home as you stumble upon new neighborhoods, restaurants, museums, and friendly Shanghai residents. Where are some of the best places to roam? Our Ambassadors recommend Yu Gardens, Jing’an Temple, and, of course, the Bund as a start. Follow Will Kyaw, our Spring 2018 Correspondent, on his beautifully recorded journey through the Shanghai Metro as he and his friends explore the city in "Unexpectedly ended up in a Slaughterhouse- Shanghai VLOG." 6. It stands out on a résumé. In the past 20 years, China has positioned itself to be a major player in almost every industry. This means companies from all over the globe have some connection with China and are on the lookout for employees with experience in this market. While abroad, practice your networking vocabulary during a language class, visit major factories and ports in the city as you study supply chain management, or even take on a full-time summer internship in Shanghai. Gaining internship experience, studying at a Chinese university, as well as practicing Mandarin in the commercial and financial capital of China are sure to make your résumé stand out from the rest. 7. It has everything a big city can offer, but is college-student-budget friendly. There’s a reason Shanghai was number one on our list of Best Places to Study Abroad for the Cost-Savvy Student. Not only are our study abroad programs in Shanghai some of the most affordable, but the cost of living compared to the United States always surprises students. For example, a meal at a dining hall can cost only ~10 RMB ($1.48 USD)–compare that to your on-campus meal plan! You’ll also learn the art of bargaining – consider everything sold in a market or on the street open for a discussion. It may seem daunting at first, but once you get the hang striking a bargain in Shanghai you’ll feel like a local. What’s better than a souvenir? A souvenir you were able to haggle for in Mandarin (or maybe just non-verbally, which is also a skill)! 8. It’s more than just skyscrapers—be prepared for art and architecture that will blow your mind! Shanghai’s global influences and traditional Chinese culture collide to make this city a feast for the eyes. Eastern and Western, as well as old and new architecture coexist side by side. The beautiful Jing’an Temple is nestled directly amid the hustle and bustle of skyscrapers while an instagrammable art-deco slaughterhouse-turned-shopping center (1933 Slaughterhouse) stands by the old Jewish Ghetto. Walking around the Bund may remind you of Europe while ultra-modern skycrapers like the China Pearl Tower sparkle from just across the river. Shanghai is also home to a vibrant arts scene with museums big and small throughout, such as student favorites like the Shanghai Museum, Yuzmuseum’s famous Rain Room, and the Shanghai Urban Planning Museum. Read about Lexi stumbling upon the latter two in one of her blogs, “Wandering in Shanghai”. 9. It allows you to use your Chinese student visa as a ticket to explore one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. China is more diverse than you think, both in ethnic groups and biodiversity. Imagine taking in snow-capped mountains, beaches, terraced hills, deserts, and river-valleys…without even leaving the country. Shanghai is widely connected by trains and buses that are safe, easy, and fun to take as you zip around the country. To match the geographical variety, adventuring on weekend trips with your program or on your own with friends will expose you to people from the 56 distinct ethnic groups that make up China. With so many people and places to see in China alone, your study abroad bucket need not involve crossing any borders; exploring China’s wide-ranging provinces will be challenge enough! 10. It is home to our local center staff, and they'll be there to help you make the most of Shanghai. If this list has you excited, or maybe just a little overwhelmed, here’s the cherry on top: since we’ve been in Shanghai for 10 years, we know a thing or two! You’ll get the necessary and relevant vocabulary right from orientation, followed by in-depth language classes that will allow you to comfortably maneuver life in your new city. “The language class teachers are often very willing to tailor the lessons to what you want to learn, so don’t be afraid to ask them,” Lucy S. (IES Abroad Shanghai Engineering - Spring 2017 | Lehigh University) advises. Course excursions and field trips will take you outside of the city’s bubble to spots you may have never heard of, such as nearby water towns like Hangzhou for canal rides, or on a breathtaking air rail journey in the mountains of Huangshan. You’ll take relevant courses with local instructors who are experts in their fields, and who don’t mind taking time to chat after class or recommend a new restaurant. As the semester rolls by, you’ll pass through Shanghai each day knowing more and more about what makes this city tick, growing from your classes, and what you’ve experienced yourself! | ||

| The SMIC Private School in shanghai The SMIC Private School is a private, coeducational K-12 school located in the Zhangjiang Science City of Shanghai, China. The school was founded by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) in 2001 and by 2009 had over 1,450 students. 2017 marked its 16th anniversary. The School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the East Asia Regional Council of Schools.Shanghai private school The school was initially founded to provide education for employees of the SMIC company. Since 2004, the school has been open for public enrollment. The school grew rapidly since its founding; the school had 75 students in the 1st year, and almost 700 students in its 4th year. The school had its first English track graduating class of 7 in 2006. In 2009, the school had over 1800 students from 22 different countries. The school is authorized and approved by The U.S. College Board as an official SAT and AP testing center. The school provides two academic tracks: an international division that uses an American curriculum with a Chinese requirement and a Chinese track that is based on the local academic curriculum but with strong English emphasis. The SMIC Private School is accredited by the Pudong Board of Education and was awarded as an "Excellent Private Elementary School and Middle/High School in China" in December 2009.[citation needed] In 2018, the school was at the center of a major food safety scandal in which its cafeteria contractor Eurest, a subsidiary of Compass Group, was found to have supplied expired and substandard food. During an inspection of the cafeteria, visiting parents of students at the school discovered moldy vegetables, expired seasoning, and food labeled with a production date in the future. The incident was reported on international media. As a result of the incident, the school headmaster Zhu Ronglin and two other administrative staff members were dismissed and are currently under investigation by government authorities. Following the incident, Shanghai food safety authorities ordered an investigation of cafeterias across the city. Expired items were also found at Concordia International School Shanghai, whose supplier is also Eurest. As a result of the investigation, the schools were ordered to cut ties with Eurest. In 2019, the school assigned a textbook to eighth grade students containing assignments for the winter break. Parents reported finding a lewd short story in the textbook titled "Mommy's Washcloth" which described a child seeing his father having extramarital oral sex with their maid. The publisher of the book has apologized and has fired the editor of the textbook. However, the school is still to be held liable for failing to properly scrutinize the textbook which was not government-approved. According to the Communist Party mouthpiece China Daily, school will be severely punished for the sexually oriented joke" by the education authority. | ||

| Becoming a bilingual teacher leads to a lifetime of making a difference I first heard of bilingual education as a student at the University of Texas in 1973, confused over my course of study and career.I was a music major, tired of lonely piano practice rooms with a fading concept of what my future in music might hold.bilingual teacher qualification Home in Fort Worth for the summer, I had a heart-to-heart talk with my mother. She was the person in my life who consistently and kindly endured my multiple searches for the meaning of life and my role in it. My mother showed me a small Star-Telegram article that spoke of a brand new program at the University of Texas called bilingual education. The report, no larger than the size of a very small business card and tucked in the back of the paper, gave the contact for more information. My mother said enthusiastically that becoming a bilingual teacher would allow me to use some of my talents in a way that would help children whose first language was not English.A quick call to Professor George Blanco, coordinator of the program, ended up changing my life and, I hope, the lives of the students I would teach, forever. As a non-native speaker of Spanish who found the language to be “como música a mis oídos” (like music to my ears), I was thrilled at the prospect of becoming a bilingual teacher. And the rest of the story is my history, having worked in the field of bilingual/bicultural and English as a Second Language education for more than 40 years. My greatest teachers have been my students, whether in public school or academia.I remember the fifth-grader, just learning English, who wrote a sentence that still makes me smile today. After teaching them the names of several animals in English, I had asked the class to use the word “sheep” in sentences.Still learning English sounds, including some such as the “sh” that do not exist in Spanish, the student wrote, “I ate three potato sheeps.” She was confusing the words sheep and chip because she was unclear as to which sound, “sh” (unfamiliar in Spanish) or “ch” (common in Spanish), to use. There are those who would lament her lack of knowledge about the sounds of English. Yet, that one sentence told me several things about her English language development. First, I learned that she could now hear the previously unknown sound. Second, she could produce the sound. Third, she needed much more exposure to the sh/ch contrast in English to grow in confidence as to when to use each sound. This student unknowingly gave me a great plan of action for helping her proficiency in the English language. Another student helped me to see that the words a teacher uses with a student still learning English may be misinterpreted. As with many adolescent girls, this Cambodian student struggled with self-esteem issues that were further complicated because of her refugee and English language learner status. One day, she rushed into my classroom sobbing over what she thought another teacher had said to her.Evidently, this very upset young student was talking with another Cambodian refugee student in class, seeking clarification about what they were to do for an assignment. The student in question did not understand that the teacher was telling her not to misbehave. Rather, she interpreted the teacher’s words to mean that she was ugly in appearance — another swipe at her already suffering self-image. The lesson for me this time was to consider how literally an English language learner might comprehend idiomatic and colloquial language.I am thankful to have had these and a multitude of other instructive experiences with my students. They have made my professional and personal life infinitely more interesting.I always tell my students I have never been bored as a bilingual or ESL teacher or professor of bilingual/ESL teacher education.I encourage anyone with interests in teaching and languages to join the bilingual/ESL teaching field. As you seek to help students learn in a welcoming, supportive atmosphere where learning is successful, your life will be changed as well.Melinda Cowart is professor and coordinator of the Bilingual/ESL Teacher Education Program at Texas Woman’s University in Denton. | ||

| Dance Class For Kids: We Introduce Your Child To Excellence. Kids dance classes are not all equal and placing your child in an excellent dance school is not easy. That is, if you care to enroll them in a dance school that offers wide ranging benefit. We know how busy you are and how tempting the lure is to look for 'kids dance classes near me', but you should resist. Do you assume that all dancing classes for kids are alike? They are not. The range in quality is staggering.Children dancing course in Shanghai This page is a summary that will introduce you to American Dance Institute's Children's Program mission, approach, reasoning and your child's golden opportunity. Kids love to move and when you play music, they dance around the room. Observe them closely and you will notice that they repeat the same movements over and over. They not only have a limited early speaking vocabulary, they have a limited early movement vocabulary. As they become familiar with movement concepts, they can understand points of reference and perspective. For example, they will take one movement that feels very familiar in their body and with our instructor’s guidance make it into a dozen different movement variations. They'll try it high, try it low, try it backwards, upside down, with a partner etc. It’s all wrapped in fun creative themes and it opens up unlimited possibilities to move, express and relate to the world around them. Our dancing class for kids program leverages a child's love of movement with a movement vocabulary and we build on that vocabulary to help them define the physical and social world around them. Dance is more than physicality, it involves intellect, creativity, and discipline. Our dance program helps a child develop richer context and perspective. Kid's love our dance classes because they are fun. We make learning dance fun because it works. Very young children should NOT compete against one another. In American Dance institute's kids dance classes, we emphasize non-competitive behavior. Competition has it's place in the world but young children are not ready for it. They lack the proper framework to understand it's fierce nature. In our kids dancing classes, children are taught to compete with themselves, not with other students, and not with your child. Comparing themselves to other children who may have more or less natural ability is not an effective metric. Dance, like all art forms, requires both technique and creativity. Our mission is to teach children proper dance technique (emphasis here) and to engage in and trust in their creative abilities. We work hard to eliminate tension, selfishness and disrespect from our classroom so that personal creativity with confidence can blossom. Competitive behavior, when removed from the classroom, is replaced by supportive and encouraging behavior. And this, dear reader, is why your child always feels welcome and accepted in our dance classes, that they belong in the class, no matter their proficiency, gender or body type. It is a wonderful, healthy, accepting environment to experience and learn in. | ||
