Roots contained harmine and harmol with 2.0% and 1.4% (w/w), respectively. beta carboline Seed extracts were potent reversible and competitive inhibitors of human monoamine oxidase (MAO-A) with an IC(50) of 27 microg/l whereas root extracts strongly inhibited MAO-A with an IC(50) of 159 microg/l. In contrast, they were poor inhibitors of MAO-B. Inhibition of MAO-A by seed extracts was quantitatively attributed to harmaline and harmine whereas inhibition by root extracts came from harmine with no additional interferences. Stems and leaves extracts were poor inhibitors of MAO. The potent inhibition of MAO-A by seed and root extracts of P. harmala containing beta-carbolines should contribute to the psychopharmacological and toxicological effects of this plant and could be the basis for its purported antidepressant actions. | |||||

| Lycopene supplements may not be enough to lower prostate cancer risk Men who want to reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer by altering their diet should eat tomatoes or tomato products rather than rely on lycopene supplements, suggest researchers from Ohio State University, Columbus. 502-65-8 Consumption of lycopene, an antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red colour, has been associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer in epidemiological studies. However, the new study, conducted in rats, indicates that other components found in tomatoes may also be associated. The researchers assigned 194 male rats with prostate cancer to diets containing whole tomato powder or pure lycopene, or to a control diet. After four weeks, the rats were further divided into two groups, one with unlimited access and one with restricted access to food. The researchers found that rats fed a diet that included whole tomato products survived longer than rats in the other groups (their risk of prostate cancer death was 26 per cent lower). Animals in the tomato-fed, energy-restricted group fared even better, showing a 32 per cent drop in risk. No benefit from lycopene alone was seen in either the energy-restricted or unrestricted groups. “Our observations support the concept that tomato products contain components in addition to lycopene that may inhibit prostate carcinogenesis,” the researchers say. They add that many men are consuming lycopene-containing supplements in the hope that they may prevent prostate cancer or enhance the treatment of their prostate cancer. “We suggest that a focus on interventions with whole tomato products and energy balance should be a priority while clinical studies simultaneously investigate the risks and benefits of lycopene supplementation.” The study, which lasted 14 months, is published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2003;95:1578). The authors of an accompanying editorial (ibid, p1563), Dr Peter Gann, Northwestern University, Chicago, and Dr Frederick Khachik, University of Maryland, point out that plant compounds evolved as sets of interacting compounds. Outside of a $3.3 billion expansion in Singapore, Las Vegas Sands doesn't have any large capital commitments, and that will keep the dividend flowing for the foreseeable future. Wynn Resorts operates in Las Vegas and Macao like Las Vegas Sands, but it's been spending more to expand its operations recently. The $2.6 billion Encore Boston Harbor opened this summer and a $400 million convention expansion will open in Las Vegas early next year. On top of U.S. projects, there are plans for another $2 billion expansion at Wynn Palace in Macao. Wynn Resorts has been able to grow and pay a 3.8% dividend yield without adding debt because of the cash flow it generates from Las Vegas and Macao. What's great about Wynn Resorts today is that we should see EBITDA rise over the next few years as new resorts ramp up, and that will help its ability to grow the dividend. Encore Boston Harbor is just getting started, the Las Vegas expansion is still a few months away, and Macao's build-out won't be done for a couple of years. If you want a growing dividend in casinos, this is a good bet. Betting on casinos can be a risky endeavor for investors because factors like luck on the casino floor and the economy can swing revenue and EBITDA wildly over time. But stocks like Gaming and Leisure Properties are a lot more stable because it's a real estate investment trust (REIT) that owns the real estate the casino operates in. Gaming and Leisure Properties started as an offshoot of Penn National Gaming, but it's become a favorite REIT for regional casino companies to tap when they need financing. Pinnacle Entertainment used the REIT to pull money out of its operations before ultimately being acquired by Penn National. Eldorado Resorts used the REIT to acquire the real estate under Tropicana Entertainment's properties as part of its acquisition of the company last year. As a REIT, Gaming and Leisure Properties has to pay out 90% of what it earns, and that's driving a 7.1% dividend yield today. The decision to work and live abroad in Shanghai was motivated by a job opportunity with The Walt Disney Company. I started working for the company in May 2014 as a performer through the college program at Walt Disney World in Orlando. I was intrigued to see how a company as big as Disney functioned in China compared to in the United States. Moving to Shanghai I work as an English teacher for young children through Disney’s extracurricular English program known in China as Disney English. In 2017, China’s extracurricular education market exceeded $4 billion. Many Chinese parents are eager to enroll their children in an extracurricular program to give them a head start in school. Disney English has created their program as a standout among the many other English learning programs throughout China. Shanghai itself is an incredible city. There is a fascinating contrast throughout the city in almost every area. Take, for example, the food. Within the same block, you will likely find carts selling cooked chicken feet, a common street food, and McDonald’s selling some of the exact burgers as in the US. You see the same contrast on the roads, which will be swept by hand with brooms made of bamboo branches, as Teslas and Rolls Royces drive by. It is a unique opportunity to live somewhere growing at a rate as fast as Shanghai, and I’m glad I made the decision to take on the challenge. While many cultural aspects in China including the language and food are still foreign to me, both experiences of working for Disney and living abroad have helped me appreciate how universal many of the classic Disney lessons are.
