But compare that number with the release of Battle for Azeroth for example ...

According to data provided by the SuperData website it appears that the number of subscribers to World of Warcraft had grown significantly between July and August 2019. The most obvious reason is the launch of WoW Classic on August 27th.

Our favorite game is the third best PC game in the month of August for estimated revenue generated buy safe WOW Classic Gold behind Dungeon Fighter Online and League of Legends. It is interesting to note that WoW was in 7th position since December 2018 with only two notable losses of interest in February (9th position) and May (not in the Top 10).

This increase is estimated at 223% according to SuperData but is not as important as the official deployment of Battle for Azeroth August 14 2018: World of Warcraft had indeed reached the second position during the month of August the fifth in September and October to finally stabilize at approximately seventh place.

It is important to remember however that when Blizzard stopped officially communicating about the number of World of Warcraft subscribers one of the reasons was that the number of subscriptions did not depict how the game was going. It is for example possible to emphasize the fact that a more or less important part of WoW Classic players subscribed for one month only to try the game then potentially stopped (or not) there where Battle for Azeroth players would rather subscribe on much longer term.

Ambiguity is therefore required since Retail and Classic subscriptions are confused especially since Patch 8.2.5 is also the tip of its nose. The figures for the month of September are also potentially biased since a promotional offer for Battle for Azeroth was made at the beginning of the month with interesting new features offered to old and new players through the sponsorship system.

However this remains a relatively plausible glimpse of the interest that Classic has in the eyes of the players at least until we have access to the figures of the coming months that will tell us a little more about the decline or not of the hype that generated version 1.12 of WoW.
