| Title | Ravalli Electric Cooperative switches lines to one-shot system | ||||
| Description | Ravalli Electric Cooperative switches lines to one-shot system Every year, Ravalli Electric Cooperative takes a special precaution with its power lines in the east and west forks of the Bitterroot when the potential for wildfires spike.Switches Usually that happens sometime in the middle of summer. This year after an unusually dry spell in the first part of May the company switched over to its one-shot protection policy, which shuts down power on the first sign of an electrical fault. Chet McWhorter, Ravalli Electric's line superintendent, said the cooperative typically switches over to one-shot protection around the first of July. This is definitely earlier than usual, McWhorter said. We are doing this because it's so dry right now. When an electrical system is on normal operation, mechanical circuit breakers detect electrical faults and trip open. That turns the power off to that circuit, similar to the circuit breakers in a home. On high-voltage power lines, the breakers will automatically turn the power on again three times prior to the power totally going off in the circuit. That works fine when the landscape is not tinder dry and any spark might be enough to cause a wildfire. When conditions call for it, the power companies change their systems to one-shot protection, which requires replacing the breakers with a fuse. The fuse eliminates the operation of re-energizing the power line to minimize the risk of igniting a fire. It also increases the chances for more extended power outages because the circuit has to be manually reset. In order to cut down on the potential for problems, Ravalli Electric is asking its members to take a look at the trees on their properties that are near power lines. If they are touching or have the potential of coming into contact with the lines, the company would like to be able to remove those trees or limbs at no cost to the consumer. Anyone with questions about Ravalli Electric's one-shot policy can call 961-3001.ast Saturday, the valley's other electric company, NorthWestern Energy, suffered a large power outage that some surmise may have been the work of a low-flying bird. The power went out to homes in the south end of Hamilton, Charlos Heights and all of Darby at about 7: 30 a.m. | ||||
