Description ver the last ten years, the Department of Defense has moved to increased uses for renewable energy in all areas of their functions. They were one of the first government agencies to use passive energy in the form of solar covers for their planes, boats and trucks in order to keep them cooler when needed and warmer when in colder climates. The point was to not only be environmentally efficient but to also be economically wise. Solar energy for the Defense Department is carrying on its plans for sound energy practices at their facilities in Hawaii in an effort to make the transition to solar energy and other renewables. Their goals are to reach a point of totally efficient means of capturing, storing and facilitating the use of solar power. It is hoped that eventually, what the Department of Defense learns from this program can be used by people to run their homes and businesses. Not only has solar energy for the Defense Department been successful, but an energy storage and management project has been implemented in Alaska which uses wind to make up for difficult weather issues that were causing drops regarding fuel use in a distant monitoring station in Alaska.

Another example of solar energy for the Defense Department in Hawaii is being managed by the University of Hawaii. A carport that has been built over a parking lot on Maui has solar panels that are combining wind along with electricity from a grid to create, store and use electricity. The energy that is produced is assisting in the saving of power needed to cool the facility. The energy managers are hoping that this project will show the multiple uses of this carport in that it can both save energy as well as create power through photovoltaic panel arrays.

Hawaii is a good place to work on alternative energy. Fossil fuel has to be brought to the islands and as a result is extremely expensive and inconvenient. The ability to create fuel locally such as solar, wind, and geothermal can be a big help to both consumers as well as the Department of Defense and other large government and industrial facilities. Solar energy for the Defense Department had a perfect location in Hawaii that they chose to work with 220v ups including wind and geothermal. The Maui Solar plan will create 1.5 megawatt of electricity which will greatly reduce Hawaii's dependence on fossil fuel. It will save a lot of money for the Air Force which will have clean and renewable solar energy to rely on for its electricity.
